Goddamn, I wish these games were on the weekends so I could watch 'em. I haven't seen any gameplay, but text descriptions alone are getting me pissed about Edu's denied goal.

As for the rest of the group, I'd like to see US (obviously) and England advance. As an American, it's safer for us if England ties or loses to Algeria, but I like the Brits enough that I half want them to win tonight.

I'll give the ref this - he's consistent. He is calling every single late tackle a yellow. If anything, that should open things up and give both teams more opportunities to move the ball if they can't just keep clipping each other to halt play.

I know the game is over, but the Germans' bread and butter is clipping opponents to stop play. They ran into their foil this game.

So much for being the only solid team in the tournament!

We can go through with a draw, it just becomes a total mess.

A draw gives us 3 points.

England would have to draw with Algeria and lose to Slovenia giving England 2 points and Algeria would only have 2 points.

If England wins tonight though then we need a victory and a Slovenia loss to move on.

England wins tonight and draws with Slovenia and we win vs Algeria:

We all end up with 5 points! How exciting.

Then it comes down to who put the biggest beating on Algeria.
We have a slight advantage here because we play them last. At the same time though Algeria could spend that whole game trying to waste time and keep the score low to keep us from advancing.

Let's see...

England wins tonight and then beats Slovakia and we win against Algeria.

The US and Slovakia would all have 1 win and two ties and it comes down to goal differential and then total goals scored.

The US has the advantage because we play Algeria last and know how many goals it will take to advance.

I want England to tie tonight, because then they'll have to play hard against Slovenia to go for the win, and then the US just has to win and not worry about goal differential.

How likely do you see England getting only 1 point from 2 games? That team would not dare go home.

Exactly. I was assuming England would win at least one of those 2 games (the one today for sure). If that happens, the US will not survive with a draw.

I think you're saying a lot of things that are inaccurate. Maybe you should stop trying to figure out the possibilities...

If England wins tonight, that gives them 4 points and Slovenia has 4 points. If we beat Algeria, we would have 5 points, so we would advance if either England beats Slovenia or Slovenia beats England. If England and Slovenia drew it would depend on the goal differentials.

As long as we beat Algeria we have a decent chance of advancing.

Listening to the english accented guy on radio, his response to the goal foul was "I think he called it for offsides, but not only did I not see it I didn't see any foul on the play".

There where at least 2 Slovenian players blatantly holding US players on the non-goal

Actually I think I am right.

If we draw we have 3 points.

Slovenia already has 4 and would advance so they can win v England and it doesn't affect us.

Algeria has zero points so a draw vs us and England gives them 2 points.

England has 1 point so a draw vs Algeria and a loss v Slovenia gives them only 2 points.

Hence we advance with 3 points. Not going to happen, but it is a possibility.

If the US could only tie Algeria then what's the point of them going to the next round?

So much wrongness on page 47 of this thread :D

US definitely got robbed on that goal. But, got crazy lucky with that goal against england too, so, I guess it equals out...a TIE if you will.

US looks so amateurish at times.

Anyone see Alexi Lalas after the game? He was so pissed :D - I didn't know if he was going to cry or punch someone. He was really pissed about the call though and really took it hard on the ref, gotta respect that.

Page 47? This is page 14.

Can't wait for the England game later. Really the games have been getting better and better, which makes sense since the first games everyone is just getting comfortable. We are in store for some great stuff once we get to the Quarters! :awe:

The refereeing in that US/Slovenia game was horrible. It felt like Slovenia played a dirty game, there were lots of cheap off-the-ball fouls, not to mention the Findley "hand ball" yellow card and the unknown foul on the US in Slovenia's goal box on the kick from Donovan even though the Slovenia player was giving Bradley a hug. That was either a goal for us to make it 3-2 or a penalty kick.

Now, the England-Slovenia game becomes interesting. Assume both England and US beat Algeria. At that point, US has 5 points, England and Slovenia each have 4. So if England beats Slovenia or vice versa, the winner is in, loser is out. If they draw, 3-way tie at 5 points. Tiebreaker #1 is goal differential. Right now England and US at even, Slovenia is +1. In the 5-point scenario, Slovenia would remain at +1, US/England would each be at least +1. Tiebreaker #2 is total goals scored. US has 3 and would be at least 4. England has 1 right now and would be at least 2. Slovenia has 3. If all teams tie there, it's time to draw lots...so, goal differential in the Algeria game becomes really important as does the score in the game between England and Slovenia. But, US seems to have somewhat of an inside edge, at least to me, assuming they beat Algeria...
