Damnit...the book was freakin' awesome. I had high hopes for this.

Christ I wanted to slap Dakota for screaming all fvcking movie long. Is she capable of playing any role other than a little girl who screams?

And the ending left me unfulfilled. The aliens get defeated by bacteria? Gimme a goddamn break. How does bacteria make their shields go down?

I can't wait for the maddox review of this movie.

Perhaps you should. That is how H.G. Wells wrote it.

I just saw it. It was great. I usually don't like Steven Spielberg. There are the only movies that I like from him:

Cast Away
Saving Private Ryan
War of the Worlds

This movie was cool though. From beginning to end. And Cruise gave an excellent performance. The movie gets right to the point and stays there till the end. No other movie had as many explosions.

I feel it's a mix between Signs and The Day After Tomorrow. Really interesting story and the characters are built up quite well.

But I also agree with this:
"Yet for all its technical beauty, there's something lacking. It often feels a bit like Spielberg phoned the film in or at the very least painted it by numbers. This has a lot to due with truncated character development, but extremely abrupt ending doesn't help much, either. In fact it feels as if somebody told Spielberg that he was running over budget and out of time and needed to end the picture quickly. As a result we're left with the cinematic equivalent of an 18-wheeler braking for an elephant stumbling across the middle of an expressway. The ending's abruptness only adds to the overall feeling of incompleteness and ultimately causes the film to be devoid of any lasting resonance. There's a feeling left hanging in the air that suggests the whole thing would have worked better as a 3-week mini-series event. This would certainly have allowed for greater character development and a hell of a lot more of the eye popping alien destruction." ~ign

I completely agree

WTF is it that NYC is always the first to go?!?!?! :|

in summary the movie was ok, but the ending sucked. IMO, if you haven't seen it, it's a dvd rental. i paid $6 so i'm happy ;)

no spoilers from me. that is all.

Around here matinee is just about the same as full price now. :(

I thought the first 50 minutes were some of the best put to film in the last few years, saying that the rest is good and the end is ok, typical Spielburg. IT is easily the best movie this summer but then again that is not saying much. Worth Matinee, cause the F/X warrant a big screen.

Does anyone else think ILM sucks at living things and great at machines and landscapes? I realize they were rushed but some of the birds looked like two polygons stuck together.

When I first heard about it last summer I got excited. That was last summer when they were doing a casting call near where I live. It was for the scene where the people were running over to a ferry crossing the Hudson. Then I found out that they were going to rush it into the theaters in time for summer '05 and I got worried. I didn't want the movie to suck because Spielberg was under the gun. I mean, Lucas takes a good three years to put out one Star Wars film and the last three of those were mediocre at best.

I'm not surprised to seem mixed reviews on this. I think if they took more time to iron out the bumps and released it in the fall or Christmas this year it would have probably been deserving of better reviews.

I'm still going to see this film so I can make up my own mind. Haven't decided whether to go pay $10.50 to see it in a theater or wait for Pay Per View. We'll see...

I really loved this movie. I had to re-read the novel last semester for a class, and I found this movie to be an amazing adaptation of the book. Spielberg really knows how to create a moving story on the silver screen! I HIGHLY recommend seeing this film!

It was decent IMO, nothing to get overly worked up over, but worth seeing on the big screen.

Some parts just lacked though.

I wonder how many people complaining about the ending actually read the book?

Or, heck, even saw the 1950s movie?

(And, out of curiosity - did they manage to include Thunder Child?)

Gotta say that it was pretty bad for me...still contemplating whether it's worth me writing a review for other sites :p

2/5 for me, really disappointing. And I still wish they would stop using Dakota Fanning everywhere and give Carly Schroeder some more work.

That's the same feeling I got from it. The special effects were great, of course, but it felt like the ending was rushed. It's like they had about 10 minutes left, and decided they need to wrap this thing up.

Screw you guys - I liked it :D I thought it rocked. Dont' know if that's because I was totally blazed, and easily got sucked into the movie or what - but man, my fvcking eyes were glued to the screen.
