What a pain. I still can't find an answer on whether or not the new Venice chip will work without a mobo BIOS update. And a few weeks ago instead of buying a chip I decided to wait until April 4 to see what was going to happen with the A64 prices once the new core came out. And then I kept waiting until stores started carrying it.....

I gotta say, if this thing isn't available on Monday, screw it. I'll buy a clawhammer or something!

Since the 4000+ is on the 90nn core you dont think it will OC very well? Since I was planning on OC and since they are both at 2.4G I could save the cash and get the 3800+ Venice then. Just thought the 4000+ would be better - is the 4200+ coming this month? Maybe should wait for it?
 
Dude, if you have the cash for a 4000+/4200+, more power to you.

Personally, I'm going with a 3000+/3200+ Venice and OC that bad boy up to 4200 level. 🙂

I don't think AMD will continue to produce Winnies (they compete for the same fabrication resources. If I'm correct, once Venice becomes mainstream, the remaining Winnies in the pipeline will come down somewhat in price.

 
a 2GHz Athlon64 with 1MB L2 would be just what i'm after! when will i be able to get one in the UK?
 
If these cpus require a bios update, then how is a first time builder supposed to update the bios without an extra older socket 939 to do it? If a bios update is required for it to work, then how are you supposed to update the bios without a supported processor? maybe im just stupid.
 
if that's the case you might have to take to a shop where they can put in a newcastle or a winnie and flash the bios. happened with some boards when the winnie came out.

And it gets more confusing, the guys over at extreme are now saying that the 3500+ san diego is actually going to have the cache crippled to 512mb, in other words the next generation 3500+ clawhammer. That makes 5 cores now wearing the 3500+ moniker

But I still don't understand how it can be rated at 3500+ at 2.0 ghz with 512k L2? maybe it will also run at 2.2?. It still could be a very good overclocker, the clawhammers they seemed to clock higher than the winchesters

If the SD 3500+ is the same chip as the 3700+ with the only difference being the cache at 512mb it stands to reason that they would clock to the same levels.
 
i thought the only difference between the venice and the san diego was the l2 cache size. if the 3500+ san diego is crippled to 512k then isn't it just a venice?!?!?
 
Yeah a Venice with sSOI instead of DSL+SOI. Just like the Clawhammer it will have the same spec as its sister chips, but will contain the core materials and processes of the top line chips

Kind of sad that they would neuter the little puppies just so they can sell them for a lower price and reach a wider market. Either that or some speculate that they failed some type of cache testing, doesn't sound likely to me.

The marketing senario sounds more reasonable to me. And would explain why they are introduced later (like the Clawhammers), because they won't neuter them until they see how many 4000+'s and 3700+'s they can sell in the initial push. But once it becomes apparent that production capacity is outpacing sales, out come the snippers🙁
 
More confusion.

Which is better sSOI or DSL+SOI? I thought DSL+SOI was AMD's latest/greatest fab generation? If so, why use sSOI for the San Diego?
 
I dont know if this has been posted but if you go to monarchcomputer.com you will see that they have all of the venice cores "listed" with the dates that they will be shipping them out. And they even have a 4000+ aka san diego core listed to ship out the 22nd of this month. OEM version that is

grrr it was listed. My bad 🙁

Anyways.. I want to get my hands on either a 3200+ venice or 4000+ san diego YAY
 
I just preorder the SD 3700+ , ETA 4-18 at the distributor, I paid for the 2day shipping so maybe by next weekend I will have something to play with😀

I saw a translated german review of the chip over at Extreme. They are reported to run a little hotter than the venice but cooler than the FX55's' The reviewer got over 2.7ghz on stock vcore, and when he gave it some volts he got 3.0 prime stable:shocked:
Thats all I had to see!!!

Hopefully some OC goodness + 1mb cache:wine:
