Terrible officiating. Just terrible.

It's funny how no one mentioned terrible officiating in the Czech-Ghana game but now the commentators smoke the ref when it's their own country in question...

I do agree that the officiating was terrible today in both games in group E...

Best moment of the match - McBride offside and Arena yelling "F*ck you" at the ref.

umm, your team got dominated by Ghana. Look at stats and how Ghana easily penetrated your defense (or lack thereof). It could've been 4-0 of Ghana didn't waste their chances, whereas the Czech Republic barely got any chances.

yeah it's obvious that US commentators are very biased... they kept making references to the US team during the ghana match for no specific reason. i had to switch to the spanish channel.

Ofcourse they're going to be biased, they're trying to cater to the US demographic since it's not going to be aired in Italy. Duh.

I only saw about 20 minutes of the Czech vs. Ghana game and the Czechs were completely outplayed by Ghana for the stretch I saw.

I agree they were outplayed but the refs had their fingers in it. I don't know if it's to a point where there'd be a chance for a tie...but who knows.

I want the US to get out of the group with Czech but that seems to be almost impossible now with the tie. Now the Czechs are missing their top three forwards for the next match (Baros and Koller are injured and Lokvenc received another yellow) so yeah this one might be very tough. Rosicky has really suprised me with his play overall him, Nedved and Jankulovski are probably the best players out there for Czech.

Well take the point, but we should have won.

i don't know. US's passes didn't really connect most of the time, and italy seems more organized than the US. the ref did throw out the guy for throwing an elbow, but the late tackle , although not as serious as the bloody elbow, well deserved a red, or at least a yellow.

Um a red? No way in hell, he had NO intent to injure there, and got the ball also with his tackle. Yellow at most.

as for pope's yellow, he should have came out shortly after he got the first.

arena should have put a fresh striker in, he didn't. he should have pulled out pope, he didn't. the off-side goal by beasly was a good call.

Agreed

overall, if italy didn't have that own goal and the stupid bloody elbow, they would have won.

with that said... go sweden!

If the ref didn't make so many stupid calls, the U.S. would have won.

Since we're talking about "if's" then I'll throw one in...

If italy didn't score an own goal they would have won.

Two games and no goals for the US should set off an alarm in the coaches head for the next match. Doubt he will realize it though.

By the way for all intersted the reason Asamoah Gyan received the yellow card for the PK is that the player who was fouled cannot take the PK according to the rules (just read it online). I wasn't familiar with this myself...

Not almost impossible. It would have been almost impossible with a loss. With a Tie, all that needs to happen is for US to beat Ghana and Italy to beat Czech.

Amoah was taken down and Gyan took the PK, so that rule doesn't apply

65': Ghana swept forward into the Czech box where Amoah was brought down by Ujfalusi at the price of a penalty. Gyan stepped up to stroke the ball home, but referee Horacio Elizondo was busy showing the red card to the defender. He subsequently showed a yellow card to Gyan for taking the kick prematurely.

It's not impossible for Czech and the US to both advance. If Czech defeats Italy and the US would beat Ghana by 4 goals they'd go (could be less if Czech would add more in the Italy net). That's why I said almost impossible.

Also you seem to speak very confidently on the fact that both those will occur..."all that needs to happen..."? I think either of those are pretty tough things to do...

The US has yet to score a goal on their own in this tournament and Ghana played very well against Czech today. Both the Czechs and Italians will be missing some key players and neither team really shined today...

I guess we'll have to wait until Thursday to see what truly does happen...

That's what I thought happened at first look at my response a few lines up...^^^ (came before your initial one 😉) However came weird to me as well...eh oh well it really doesn't matter now.

Now the US athletes which are mostly from Ghana are going against their relatives which still live there. Not trying to be racist, but that's what african american means (politically correct [tm]). US is lucky to have them but unfortunately we still have a few white guys which will ruin it. prediction: Ghana 2 US 1. Happy independence day

let me add another to settle this point.

if germany had exploded, both teams would have lost.

Just pay attention to his name. 🙂

Thanks czech09.

I'll add my thoughts: This draw sets up a really exciting round of final games for the group. Anyone of the four can go out.

US tactics: USA played an agressive game and it actually worked in putting Italy out of their stride. They weren't able to gather any rhythm throughout the match. I don't see how they can play an agressive game against Ghana though without turning into a bloodbath. What's certain is that the US cannot return to the tactics in the first match against Czech Rep. either.

Both teams had bad calls against them. Italy had a few bad offsides, and the US had that atrocious red. However, Pope's red was deserved, and Mastroeni should've gotten a card (albeit not a red) for his tackle.

Besides that, I felt it was fairly even as far as the refs went. Overall, Italy played a great first 25 minutes or so. But then their own goal threw them off their composure, followed by the (well-deserved and a$$holish) red. All in all, if Italy can play the rest of the tournament like they did Ghana (and the first quarter or so of today's match), they'll be in good shape. And if the US can play as well as they did in the 9 on 10 situation--while finding a way to score a goal or two--they'll put in a good effort.

I think the refs decisions were a sham - just too inconsistent. Rossi's foul was diabolical, red card was fully justified. Your first red card ought to have been a yellow. Pope was going to be off anyway. His first three challenges after HT were poor, he would've got another yellow sooner or later. The yellow cards seemed very inconsistent towards the end.

I think Italy played very poorly throughout. Gilardino's header was spot on (and the cross in) but otherwise pretty bad. US played agressively in a spirited match. A bit worrying they haven't met the back opf the net yet though, although it doesn't seem to have got them down.

No problem. Thursday is going to be insane. I just checked and both matches start at the same time so throw tactics out the window it's time to play or pray hehe...

Agreed, I was very disappointed with Italy for the majority of the match, and the card and foul calling was inconsistent...but other than the BS red against the US, I felt it was inconsistent evenly against both teams.

Italy had a few good moments, but they really need to come together better (and play more aggressively) against the Czechs. Sadly, it seems they've always been fairly content with playing not to lose rather than to win. Hopefully that'll change soon.

But that's the philosoophy of Italian football. All the players play football in Italy anyway...and just to think this is the team that they said would 'go out for the win'!

All of the last group games start at the same time.
