Haha, ESPN should be ashamed of theirselves. Always preaching fair play and what not and now they are ripping into the referee. Sure he was bad but this is hardly professional. We can say all we want but they should have some standards.

Even the Italian correspondant said the ref was terrible.

The refs were terrible. As for ESPN I've gotten used to their pathetic commentary. They'll glorify you if you're doing well but if you're playing poorly oh man..."The USA just got smoked"...or "the Italians haven't shown up" (Italy scored about 3 mins after he said that.) or "the Czechs are old and slow they should have played the US at 3pm so the US could take advantage of them".

They also have a ton of non-sense commentary...I usually try to watch Univision when my friends aren't around (has happened like once). Even though I'm not fluent in Espanol I can understand about 70-80% of what they're saying.

ESPN also has the worst highlights I've ever seen. For example the highlights from yesterday's Argentina game included two of their goals - that's it. It's been like that pretty much every match - they show a bit more from the US matches but it's usually not much better. All they would have to do is just download the ones on the Fifa World Cup site and play those if they're too lazy to make/replay their own.

Another thing - they don't start with any coverage until right before the play starts...I've never seen this in anywhere (and I've watched soccer in several countries before). They're probably working on making up for the lost commercial time or something but it's terrible regardless. No national anthems (I've heard the US in the game against Czech).

Their lineup announcements are terrible - they could show it all at once like every other broadcast does. Their screen layout is even worse - their score is at about the halfway point of the top 1/3 - completely unnecessary. Not to mention the ESPN bar at the bottom. The game against Czech I learned about 120 times that Ben Roethlisberger wasn't wearing a helmet (what an idiot) and crashed his bike...amazing...

Overall: D- coverage - they don't get an F just because they at least don't have commercial breaks.

Did anyone here watch the Ghana vs Chech match ? If so, you probably noticed the fans of each team carrying their respective flags, right ? Nothing special about that. BUT - did you notice what flag was waved by one of the Ghana national team players right after each of their goals ? He waved it as he was celebrating with the other players close to the corner post ? Lets see if anyone here was sharp enough to notice which flag it was (hint: not the Ghana flag), which player carried it, and why did he do it ?

Hint #2: you can see it (after the seond goal) in the game video recap on FIFA's official world cup website

After being a Fifa certified referee since I was 11 (ya.. I was 11 even though minimum age is supposed to be 12), I wanna comment on that game..

Since 1998, FIFA has been trying to have soccer portrayed as a finess game rather than a physical game. Though, there is always a balance between physical and finess. Supposedly, FIFA issued advisories that changed the rule from 'played the ball' to 'intent of the foul' to try to make the game look different and more respectable (sic).

The old rule used to always be that any tackle or play was acceptable if the BALL was played FIRST. For example, if a defender slide tackles a ball from a forward and the forward then trips over the defender's legs, that used to not be a foul according to the old rules since the defender played the ball. Now, it's a more judgemental call. Dangerous play is no longer accepted - even if the offender plays the ball first.

However, malicious intent (like Italy's red card foul) is now and was always a red card offense. He clearly meant to elbow the US player.

The other two red cards were completely wrong. Most of the yellow cards were wrong. The game was officiated horribly. The first two-thirds of the game, the referee was so strict that play was halted and ruined at times. The last third, most needed calls were not called at all. The referee SUCKED.

IMO, USA played awesome - especially compared to how horrible they played against Czech. I think that referee deserves to be stripped naked and beaten.

Sadly, it seems they've always been fairly content with playing not to lose rather than to win. Hopefully that'll change soon.

But that's the philosoophy of Italian football. All the players play football in Italy anyway...and just to think this is the team that they said would 'go out for the win'!

Exactly; but they showed some promise in the Ghana game in that they didn't completely play with that mindset. I wonder how long it'll take them to realize that they're actually a better team when they're trying to score.

Fansetil (Ghana player) plays in the Israeli premiere league, and he explained in the press conference that being a devout christian, the Israeli flag for him represents the power of christ.

I wonder if we'll see the flag again in the game against the USA.....

Anyone got a vid clip of the goal attempt by the US that was offsides?

Missed it and it's not on the highlight vids at FIFA

That ref will probably not be able to ref again. Last world cup he was turned away because of poor calls in the past.

what a tough game! Inspiring play by the US team. The last 4 mins with corner kick after corner kick was just gut wrenching. it was amazing to see 9 players cover so much open space and not get routed!
cant wait until thursday!

it wasn't just that it was offsides but it pope stood in front of the keeper to shield his view while the ball was shot. it was a legit call, unfortunately.

Didn't see that, but I did see someone waving a pirate flag before the start of the US-Italy game. 😕

I can't believe I missed this game!

I was looking forward to it all week, but my golf game in the morning got rained out and I ended up playing in the afternoon. Well, at least they didn't lose!

The U.S still has a chance, small, but it could happen!

I really hope we do well in the next game, I'm actually off so I can watch all 3 matches that day!

Now the US athletes which are mostly from Ghana are going against their relatives which still live there. Not trying to be racist, but that's what african american means (politically correct [tm]). US is lucky to have them but unfortunately we still have a few white guys which will ruin it. prediction: Ghana 2 US 1. Happy independence day

Next time try to listen.......
