Two footed, studs up and late into his ankle. Red is not outrageous in that situation.

that was one footed and he was going for the ball. Yellow at the worse, definatly not red.

Mastroeni and De Rossi. Watch the replays, you will see that both red cards were definitely legitimate for red. Ref will get a lot of stick but he was left with little choice out in a rough match.

I feel that the red cards were both deserved. Bruce Arena should bring Eddie Johnson in and drop Donovan back into the midfield. I'd probably take Convey out.

No. Mastroeni was clearly going for ball, but got ankle instead because of the speed of play. That is NOT a red card. Red cards are for plays that intentionally hurt or attempt to hurt a player.

Convey was doing pretty good there at the end.

Not true, a player can be red carded for committing a serious foul. I believe Matroeni's tackle can be classified as a serious foul - two footed late tackle into the Italian's ankles.

He was going for the ball, but the ball was long gone and all was left was his feet. Came in real hard with studs up and ball nowhere to be found. Could have broken his leg. That is a red. Not as violent as an elbow to the face, but red nonetheless.

What was late about it? The slide was already in-action when the ball was kicked away. What would you have the US player do, break his own foot to stop himself?

I wholeheartedly disagree. 18 years of soccer in me, I know an intentional foul when I see one, as well as a serious one. That was a yellow at worse.

Even if it wasn't late, the ball wasn't even close to the tackle and the foul itself was serious enough to be red carded, imo.

The rules for red card seem pretty broad:
1. Serious foul play. This includes a tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent.
2. Violent conduct
3. Spitting at anyone
4. A deliberate hand ball to deny an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by any player other than a goalkeeper in his own penalty area
5. Committing an offence that denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (informally known as a professional foul)
6. Using offensive, insulting or abusive language or gestures
7. Receiving a second caution (yellow card) in one game

Seems like #1 on this one, if anything, but I don't know...

18 yrs of soccer here too. Announcers on TV making it seem like a red card is only an option if you throw your arms up and box another player. This is soccer and a challenge like that is red. Especially in this tournament where they are extremely strict on the pitch.
