The Czechs are playing so well and the Netherlands are great! Robben is so good. Baros, Robben, Nistelrooy....

It's going to be interesting in the English Premier League next season. New managers, new players actually top new players in the clubs. Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal. Oh, don't forget Everton. Maybe Rooney can make an impact. Moyes is a young manager as well.

Yes, finally, Holland advanced :D But I'm pretty sure the Czech will win the championship, best team so far. The biggest problem with Holland is that when they start to play defense, they gonna lose games.

That's 100% correct. Also Ruud will definately need some help up front. Did you see Roy today? I can't believe this team is scoring so much goals with just one striker.Well not a typical striker of course!

As for the Czechs they are playing fantastic football. I mean they were playing with 9 SUBSTITUTIONS!!!
Can you grasp that? And they still won the match!!

The English league will be awesome next season for sure.

Chelsea got the best coach in the world. Now they signed Robben and Ferreira and got rid of some players like Veron, and will likely get rid of more players and buy some very good ones over this summer.

Manchester United signed some useless players last summer and made such ineffective use of them (i.e. Djemba-Djemba and Kleberson). Out of all their signings, the 18-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo was the most effective player. I believe that they signed Jaap Stam to solve their defense problem (Rio will be out for the first couple of months, I think) and Alan Smith to add to their list of strikers, although I am not sure how well he'll do at United.

Liverpool, at fourth place, was 30 points behind Arsenal and 15 points behind third-placed United. They got an excellent coach and hopefully will regroup for a nice four-way title challenge next season. However, I think it will most likely be them fighting for fourth place against other good sides like Newcastle, Charlton, Aston Villa, Birmingham and others. I expect Bolton and Portsmouth to play very very well as well.

As for Arsenal, they will be champions once again! MUAHAHAHA!!!! :D

P.S. By the way, it is rumoured that Rooney will most likely leave Everton. Guess where he is headed to and guess who is prepared to shell out 50M euros to sign him? ;)

Before the tournament started, I barely got to watch the countries play in their qualifiers and friendlies (except for occasional highlights) so I could only play guesses based on club performances of the well-known players.

But now that the group stage is finished, I say that the Czech Republic is the strongest side. Denmark has been the most entertaining. :) Portugal finally realized that they need to start Ronaldo. England also started to play well but need to watch out for defending against set-piece play. France has been very disappointing and I blame a lot of defensive errors to Mikael Silvestre - he made some very very choppy and dangerous plays. To my surprise, Barthez played well without significant errors so far.

It'll be lovely quarterfinals. :D

The Czech have been playing very well indeed, but they've been playing against an impotent Germany, hit and miss Dutch side, and a country with its first entry in the Euro Championship.

The Danes have had a good run thus far, but there's is a side that could easily be overcome against an underdog.

England have picked up the confidence they need and should win the Portugal game, provided, as you say, they defend better on the set plays and don't make silly errors. I'd like to see Lampard and Scholes put a few more away, and we need to see more from Owen and Beckham. Rooney is capable of creating his own goals, he shouldn't have to rely on Owen et al. to create the play.

France haven't been playing at their best and I would be very suprised, and disappointed, to see them advance further.

Since Germany is out I really do not care who will win the tournament as long as it is not England or the Netherlands.

Czechs might later regret they let the Dutch move on to playoff.

Actually it doesn't matter since Denmark is going to beat the Czechs

Mourinho's assessment on Portugal vs. England:

Too close to call, says Mourinho

UEFA Champions League-winning coach José Mourinho will be an interested observer when England take on UEFA EURO 2004? hosts Portugal in Lisbon tonight.

Past and present
Mourinho is settling into life in London after leaving FC Porto for Chelsea FC at the end of the 2003/04 season. He has been busy already, raiding his former club for Portuguese international defender Paulo Ferreira as his first new signing. There are five Porto players left in Portugal's squad while Chelsea's Wayne Bridge, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole will all hope to get the chance to impress at the Estádio da Luz.

Diplomatic approach
Looking ahead to tonight's contest in an interview with Chelsea TV, Mourinho expected "a wonderful match" but revealed a diplomatic approach to his thoughts on the likely winners. "If I said I want Portugal to win, the English people will not accept it well, and if I say I want England to win, the Portuguese people will say that I've been here two days and already I want them to win," he said. "[The result] is not so important for me. What's important is that I am linked to both teams and I am very proud because of it."

Tactical warfare
Turning to the likely tactics on view, Mourinho said: "I think Portugal will have a problem because Portuguese teams normally don't play with two strikers. So when Portuguese teams have to face a team with two strikers through the central zone, it's difficult and normally they have to change their structure. So when I see England with two strikers through the middle I see the Portuguese coach [Luiz Felipe Scolari] pushing Costinha, who is a midfielder, back to play with three defenders in the middle. I think England can dictate a change in the Portugal structure and because of it I think Portugal could have a problem.

Porto triangle
"At the same time, I think the middle [of the pitch] will be crucial because Portugal has a Porto midfield triangle playing together," he added. "Costinha, Deco and Maniche have played together for the last two years and they know everything about space, they know everything about changing positions and compensations, they know everything about it, it comes naturally to them. On the other side, you have Lampard and [Steven] Gerrard, plus [David] Beckham and [Paul] Scholes coming inside. I think from the tactical point of view, for us sitting at home watching, it will be great."

Close call
Despite his reluctance to pick a winner, Mourinho did venture his thoughts on how the scoring would play out. "I would say that I don't believe there will be a big difference in goals," he said. "If you told me Portugal will beat England 3-0 or England will beat Portugal 4-1, I'd say it was almost impossible. I would say a minimum result of 1-0 or 2-1, or extra time or penalties. I don't know, but they are two good teams in a very good moment." Whichever side wins tonight could go on to lift the Henri Delaunay trophy come the final on 4 July, the coach concluded.

On the bolded remark: See, brigden? I am not the only one who predicts one winner and one score. ;)
