Bolt just got a world record of 19.30 in the 200m against a head wind.:Q

First athlete to beat world records in both the 100m & 200m in the same olympics.

It's his 22nd birthday today. Crowd is singing Happy Birthday.

Bolt is a showman! but he's so good that he's not coming off as cocky or arrogant.
Great athlete this guy.

Are you sarcastic or are you serious?

"BEIJING - Usain Bolt completed his sprint double Wednesday with a gold medal in the men's 200m.

Once again, the Jamaican blew away the field, but this time he ran through the finish and with a 19.30 broke Michael Johnson's world record.

Asked if he is the greatest sprinter in history, Bolt replied, "I don't need to answer that. You guys know that answer. I am the best. I just proved it at the Olympics."

Churandy MARTINA of Netherlands Antilles got the silver, several strides back at 19.82.

American Wallace Spearmon finished third but was disqualified for stepping on a lane line. That gave the bronze to teammate Shawn Crawford, who entered as the defending Olympic champion. (Full results)

The final American, Walter Dix, was fourth.

Replays of the race appear to indicate that Martina was also out of his lane, but he has not yet been disqualified. If officials agree, that would move Crawford to silver and Dix to bronze.

On Saturday night, Bolt won the 100m with a world record of 9.69 seconds. He began his celebration with 20 meters to go, throwing his arms in the air and pounding his chest as he crossed the finish.

He had this one won about halfway through, but unlike his record-setting performance in the 100m, there was no hot-dogging, no celebrating until he crossed the line. He went hard all the way, looking at the clock down the stretch, leaning at the line, knowing that Johnson's venerable mark was within reach.

When he saw the number come up -- a number that never has before -- he raised his arms, then fell flat to his back, arms and legs outstreched, and basked in the roar of the Bird's Nest crowd.

Bolt is the first man since American Carl Lewis in 1984 to sweep the 100m and 200m gold medals at an Olympics. He is also the first man ever to break the world marks in both sprints at an Olympics. Not even Lewis or Jesse Owens managed that.

Showing what he can do when he runs at full speed all the way through the finish - something he hadn't done yet in the Beijing Games - Bolt eclipsed the old record of 19.32 seconds set by Michael Johnson in Atlanta in 1996."

US vs Argentina in the semifinals for the second Olympics in a row!

it would be fun to watch. ARgentina's got Ginobili, Oberto, Nocioni, Delfino
it'll be like an NBA game

Wow, that was an awesome volleyball match - USA beats Serbia in 5 sets...

except they don't have anywhere near the depth, and only Ginobili is really of any notoriety...it'll be yet another team USA rout

Yep. I hope certain people (Jim Sheridan) can finally shut the hell up with the USA team hate. Oh Greece defeated them 4 years ago and they will pose quite a challenge (US blowout). Oh Spain are the champions of Europe (US blowout). Oh Australia has size and will pose a serious challenge (US blowout).

Head wind was 0.9m against his motion, at near sea level too!

CBC commentator said he might be able to run 18.5 with optimal conditions.

Since the 200 is run on a "U" portion of the track, would a head wind possibly be a tail wind for the starting portion of the race?

Kobe looks like he's found his stroke from downtown so hopefully the last apparent weakness of the team is no longer an issue. I was suprised Redd didn't get more playing time since he was presumably there to provide an outside threat. Looking forward to Argentina, I would like to see some revenge for the guys that were on the US bronze medal team.

anyone got a link to video of the 200m final?

NBC's probably deliberately not showing it online nor on replays so you will tune in to it during primetime

Isn't that better than the US going into a game feeling over-confident and losing?

Not that I really care, but it appears China was awarded a phantom gold medal. Yesterday they had 43 gold medals. Today they picked up one gold in women's taekwondo. But now they mysteriously have 45.

and I only count 44

I think it's missing the gold from sailing from a cursory search, ESPN probably didn't have the code to handle China winning a gold in sailing.

ESPN.com doesn't have them winning a gold in sailing: Text

Bolt was 2.1% faster then the 2nd place guy in the 100 and 3.4% faster then the 2nd place guy in the 200.
In Phelps biggest margins of victory, he was 2% faster then the 2nd place guy in the 200 IM and 1.9% faster then 2nd in the 200 free.

You know what's great about this year's olympics? Watching the US's dominant competitors (Rogers-Dalhauser, May-Walsh, softball, Phelps) falter, appear to be on the brink of losing, and still pull out the win.

People have commented that we don't care about these sports except during the Olympics. Sure, that's mostly true. But I'm a fan of sports in general. I don't follow football and don't know all the players' names, but I love to watch an exciting game. No way in hell I'll watch 162 baseball games in a year, but I love a dramatic playoff series. These are the top athletes in their sports, and most of them won't be set for life like professional athletes are. I love watching them do what they do even if I don't follow their sports or know all of the rules.
