So that race, was it live? As in, am I watching tomorrow morning's games live if I'm on the east coast, or would I have been able to know that he won that medal prior to the broadcast on NBC?

It's live, as I understand it. That race took place at 10:15pm Monday evening (EST). In Beijing, that was 10:15am Tuesday, live.

It's all tape delay on the west coast though.

So EST = live, PST = memorex

The NBC's money is making it start at 10AM in Beijing.

Very nice. I'll take it.

Kills me that I had to install Silverlight to watch the replay of the 4x100. Seriously, is the lockdown necessary? Is NBC planning to sell archive DVD's of the events or something? It's absolutely fucking awful that the Olympics and the whole spirit of the games is tied down with DRM.

Piersol doesn't even seem that excited...haha

he thought he saw the guy next to him had won but was certain he beat him so he was confused 😛

also he's been through this before considering his domination of the backstroke at Athens in 2004...

Did you see the article on the silverlight online version of the games being crappy...compared to HD. 😛

LOL - You gotta love the efficient use of resources by the Chinese - Pretty girls holding signs in the gymnastics pit for the sole purpose of dividing what team sits where. As opposed to, a simple stand and/or rope.

Yeah, I love seeing these cute Chinese girls just standing around everywhere.

How on this planet did he have it in him to win that?

Didn't even seem like he was trying until the last 50m...Double jointed knees? Super flexible ankles...Marvel should make Aquaman with Phelps. It'd make a buttload of money!

Yeah oops...

Am I the only one that thinks that the "best athlete in the world" title keeps getting pinned on Phelps? I mean, obviously he's the best swimmer in the world right now, and what he is doing is both exhausting and amazing.

But all he does is swim. If there were 16 different disciplines for basketball then a basketball player could win more then one gold medal.

I've always thought this as well, some sports you can only get 1 medal, others you could get like 10. And you have to factor in not many people have enough access to water to even get started in swimming. Being the best in the world only makes you the best of several thousand good swimmers. Take soccer on the other hand, being called best in the world and your one of millions of hard core athletes, hard to compare the two.

Are you a swimmer? The differences between, say, the 400m medley & the 50m freestyle are significant. I understand your sentiment to an extent, but it's kinda akin to stating an athletics event that combines a 100m sprint with a 110m hurdles followed by a long jump is the same as a 100m sprint. Being good at one stroke/distance doesn't make you good at another. Phelps is special because he's great at all of them.
