So that race, was it live? As in, am I watching tomorrow morning's games live if I'm on the east coast, or would I have been able to know that he won that medal prior to the broadcast on NBC?

It's live, as I understand it. That race took place at 10:15pm Monday evening (EST). In Beijing, that was 10:15am Tuesday, live.
