I am not a NASCAR fan, but I feel sorry and sad about this too... he was a great race car driver, no matter what he drives...

I watched the end of the race today and saw his crash... I never thought it was that serious...

Yeah this sucks! Im not into NASCAR, but I know a lot of people that are into it. He seemed to be the guy I though of when someone would say NASCAR.... mainly because I have a friend that looks just like him. That and all the Intimidator stickers on the big trucks around here.

There was and 18 car pileup that was independant.

Earnhardt died on the last half of the final lap. Sterling Marlin bumped him from behind sending him into the wall at 180 MPH.

Thanx also for the link, I have quite a few good friends and family that followed nascar ,and have an uncle that races in a minor circuit sometimes.

I just heard about this on my way home over thr radio about 2 hours ago.

I'm not a big Nascar fan in general (NHRA is more my style ), but if there was one guy in particular I associated with the sport (auto racing in general too I mean, not just NASCAR). It was Dale Earnhardt.

It hit me sooooo hard. I had to pull over when I heard it, and I was less then a block from home.

He always seemed to be a genuinely nice guy, and the fact that his kid was in the race with him (I think he finished 2nd?) made it even more sad.

What a shame. I thought he'd stick around, and be the old man of the sport like Richard Petty did.

It's time to make the sport a little more safe. Petty's grandson, along w/ Kenny Irwin died right here in New England (New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon N.H.) within a two month period.

There's just been too many deaths lately IMO. Too bad it's gonna take the death of one of their big time drivers to make it happen.


R.I.P. Dale. You'll be in our prayers.

As warcleric said, he died doing something he loves. If we can all be that lucky when it is our time.

I heard one of his good friends, I believe Dr. Jerry Punch, say that Dale would have said about the whole thing....."That's Racing". I am sure that is how he feels.

I caught myself thinking the same thing, that it would be a good idea to make it more safe. But then it just wouldnt be NASCAR if it were made too safe. I believe that these accidents are just a string of very bad luck. Considering the low occurance of fatal injuries sustained when there were little or no safety regulations at all on the cars. My parents have been acquaintences of the Earnhardts on a few occasions, and our condolences go out to their family. Sometimes for a true competitor like Dale going out in an instant is better than being injured and having to watch other people do what you love to do. I know his family would prefer to have him around, as would I if it were my father, but I also know that my father is much like Dale in his strength and passion, and I know that it would be worse on him to be incapacitated than it would be for him to have perished all together. Again, this man has meant so much to motor sports, and NASCAR that his death will be far reaching in its effects. Although NASCAR will go on without him, it will never really be the same. We will all miss you Dale, our hopes are that Dale Jr. will continue your legacy.

Well, no more reason for me to watch NASCAR. Earnhardt was the only reason I watched, he could drive better than anyone I have ever seen; he could make that Monte Carlo 20ft wide when he had to. He was perhaps the greatest competitor that racing had ever seen and we may never see his equal. His memory will live forever with fans of the sport. My thoughts go out to his family, especially Dale Jr who I'm certain will have a very difficult time climbing back into a race car.

Him and Mark Martin are my two fav's, His son definantly has his talent though. So I think he will do a great job of having the family name hold strong in NASCAR.

BDawg, if your gonna tell of the incident at least tell it the way it happened. Sterling Marlin had the low line and Dale had the upper line. Dale in an attempt to "shut the door" on Sterling came down the track and tried to get in front of Sterling but instead caught the front of
sterlings car with his rear left quarter. Having to react to the contact Dale started up the track at what would have been a sideswipe angle to the outer wall. But unfortunatly his good buddy Ken Schrader was there and he tapped Dales rear right quarter and that is what turned him headlong into the outer wall. But to anyone who has any doubt as to what happened just watch the video and it clearly shows that Sterling was on the yellow line the whole time until Dale tapped him and he had to react. Yes Sterling and Dale made contact but Sterling didn't initiate it.

Dale was a great driver, a good father and husband, and an all around decent fella to anyone that met him. And I guarantee you that he'd have some choice words for anybody that said Sterling took him out because it's just not true no matter how many times it's said.

Give 'em he11 Dale!

Definitely agree, blaming Sterling, or anyone, would not be right. It certainly looked to me that his car initially was disrupted by "dirty air", before either of the touches with Sterling's car.

From what I understand, both Dale Jr. and Michael Waltrip will be racing this Sunday. It might seem morbid, but I bet that's what Dale Sr. would have wanted. There's gonna be a lot of people pulling for those two to not only win the race, but the season championship. Would be a fitting tribute, esp. if Little E could do it. So far, his father is the only driver to ever win the championship in just their second year. And I think Waltrip will be driving with a lot of determination too. I just wonder if their teams can pull it together.
