I don't have a link for it right now, but some of the kernel guys and the SetCPU developer have the G2 running at 1.3-1.4Ghz right now.

Can someone explain to me why everyone is talking about this phone? As far as I knew, the EVO was the best phone out there (tied with Epic, basically)...the G2 has a smaller screen, no HDMI out, slower stock processor, (can't really think of any more cons). But still, I would think the larger screen would make the EVO the favorite of geeks like myself.

Why is the G2 so coveted by the supernerds (well, other than me)?

physical keyboard
stock Froyo (no touchwiz, sense, blurr)
HTC quality
The "slower processor" actually overclocks to 20% faster than the Galaxy S
Touchpad
GPS works like a champ
Battery life is GREAT
Its not a Samsung

Thanks for the quick one. Is the physical keyboard the thing that keeps pulling in all these hackers and techie types that are supposedly switching to this phone? I still dont get it I guess. Maybe there's a thread here explaining why a physical keyboard is so awesome.

I am still leaning towards the EVO, with its bigger screen and HDMI out, it just seems like a real asset in the Audio/Video category and capable of doing more than the G2. I am just about to jump off the iphone bus, looking for a more powerful phone...switching from AT&T to either Tmobile or Sprint in Las Vegas. Sprint has 4g here and my buddy's EVO gets 4megs down while I get only 500k on my iphone. That hurt when I saw that.

Anyways...I should probably just start a new topic about this but while I am here...are there any android options for streaming music and video to your phone from your home computer? I think I read in another thread that there aren't any.

The physical keyboard is just a personal preference. For me it is an absolute must. I've tried other late model Android powered phones and the iPhone etc. but I can bang out text twice as fast with a phys kb. Even if it's a phys kb I haven't used yet. I won't even look at a phone without one anymore. I was very happy to see the DesireZ/G2. The "power" of the G2 is not lacking by the way... regardless of clock speed. It's a newer fab and in addition, as of a couple days ago, you can overclock the thing to what like 12 or 14 hundred mhz anyway. At stock speed it's still completely comparable though.

I'm not trying to sell the G2 as better than the phones you mentioned... It may or may not be depending on personal preference... it's just best for me is all. Regardless, it's in the ring with the phones you mentioned as a major and totally legit contender.

subsonic, works great. sits as a java tray app on your home computer, and you connect to it with the android app. not free though. ($10 bucks, well worth it)

If you want Sprint, get the Evo.

The G2 is just a solid phone. The physical keyboard was the one thing I didn't like about it but I've grown to love it. IMHO, right now its the best phone Tmo has to offer. Its not geared towards multimedia like the Galaxy S series...no hdmi, no super pretty display. But if you feel the G2 compared to the other high end phones, it feels way more solid.

Thanks for the advice in my other thread. Ordered this from Amazon yesterday, spent $100 rather than getting locked in for a long time.

Actually. Just checking that I did read the Amazon Wireless deal fine print correctly. It says on the site

When you purchase your device with service from AmazonWireless.com, we automatically pass along an instant discount from the carrier to you. This discount has been provided to you based on your agreement to (a) activate a new, or extend an existing, line of service for this device with the carrier, and (b) maintain this service in good standing for a minimum of 181 consecutive days. If you do not activate or extend a line of service in connection with this device, or if your service is canceled/disconnected before 181 consecutive days, AmazonWireless.com will charge you $250 per device, plus applicable taxes.

This just seems plain better than activating a new device through TMobile, where you have to sign a 2 year contract and the phone costs $200. Or did I miss something?

How much did you pay?

If you paid less than $499, you signed a 2 year contract. Plus when ordering through Amazon, there is an extra penalty if you terminate your contract early.

Ah, I understand now. You're only buying the phone through Amazon -- and the phone discount is contingnent on you keeping your service with TMobile. The contract with TMO is separate.

I paid $99.99 for the phone.

I didn't receive any email about my service from TMobile yet. Just from Amazon about my phone shipping.
