Found a skill tree calc, not sure if it's up to date as it says Nov. http://torguild.net/calculator/

EDIT: It's not, this one is better: http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc

WOW, it made the front page of msnbc.com:

BioWare warns users away from filling 'Old Republic' servers

They're working on a player transfer capability so players can move to new servers.

"Reid says BioWare is working on a character transfer ability that will allow these players to escape to less crowded environs, but that "there is no ETA on when it will be available."

Seems odd that they wouldn't already have that coded in....

Why would they? Everything is new. People are starting new chars. Very few have made it past 30. Anyone that thinks their server is too crowded should just start on a less crowded server since they really won't be losing anything.

It's the morons that are all flocking to the "cool" server names like Iron Citadel, and the Reaper one. Bunch of stupid kids all wanting to be on the best name server for no reason. Which is why I was ecstatic when I heard the stupid name my server has when they assigned my guild to it.

Note I'm not mentioning my guild or the server in any of these posts for a reason. However, it is no secret to what guild I'm in currently. Doesn't take much more skill than spending the time needed to go through past posts of mine to find it.

I can't believe people are boo-hoo-hooing over crowded servers. Again, start on a less crowded server with a stupid name instead.

I went to Iron Citadel because my brothers followed some friends there. I can assure you, the name of the server had no impact on where I landed.

That's great advice, unless your pre-loaded guild is on one of the always full servers.

Yeah this. A lot of people had no choice and the system as such that moving an entire guild over could be quite onerous.

We chose a server with a crappy name and it still has queues.

If you have a small guild, less than 100 members, it is not that hard to relocate. If you have a HUGE guild like mine, then I feel your pain.

Still guilds knew ahead of time which server they were being assigned to. If I was a guild leader and say my guild being assigned to Iron Citadel or Reaper I would have moved the guild somewhere before the game started to some stupid sounding server name. Actually my guild for the republic players DID that for the server we were assigned to. Our republic guild was assigned to the Shadowlands. We knew that was too popular a sounding server name and made actions to change that.

Oh and we had almost 900 people on our Mumble server last night. If anyone is using ventrilo, I highly suggest looking into Mumble. We had to move since Ventrillo doesn't support servers that allow for that many active connections.

This was the problem with Merlin and Lancelot back in the beginning of DAoC. Big reason why I ended up on Galahad! Regardless, a lot of us go where friends are playing, and with the big guild pre-release assignments, some had no choice.

For all their talk about having a smooth launch, which it is for the most part, having something like this ready and waiting would've made a lot of sense. This way they could try to convince guilds to transfer first on a fresh server and maybe try to convince their friends and family to come along as well.

On the business side it just seems like a smart way to make extra money. Blizz's transfer service is automatic now a days and it takes less than a few hours, if that, for it to be completed and they charge $25 a pop.

$25 for a transfer is robbery, seriously, especially now that it is automated. EQ does the same and it's no less a robbery. $5 I could understand. $25?

It shouldn't be left to each guild/player to guesstimate which server is going to playable based on some arbitrary criteria like name. It's up to the publisher to not screw up on such an epic level.

My guild is rather small, but we have better things to do with our limited gaming time than sit in 1+ hr queues or go around server hopping because Bioware can't get it right.

I agree, especially if you want to move all your characters from one server to another. In wow that would cost me $250. Forget that.

Oh I don't disagree with you on that but it doesn't make sense to not have this high profit service available.

ugh $60+15 a month. sigh
Also they are making us put in a CC on file or input a time card even to play the first free 30 days that comes with the game.

Everyone does. And if you look at it as $60 + $15, that's wrong. You get a month free with the $60, so it's more like $45 + $15.

Not sure if I had to put in a CC number in the first time I ever played WoW. I believe I got the box and didn't input a CC number until mid way through the first 30 days.

Dear All:

I am thinking of trying ToR sometime over the next week or so but am slightly hesitant as I have never played an MMO of any sort. Although I regularly play single-player RPGs, I am concerned that my unfamiliarity with the mechanics of MMOs will prove too insurmountable a barrier to my enjoyment of the experience.

Moreover, I doubt that even were I to get into ToR, I could ever envision myself playing in a 900+ member guild (as some have mentioned in this thread). At most, I reckon I would either be solo'ing or playing with my brother and perhaps one or two others. Thus, will playing with a small number of players necessarily diminish the experience or can MMOs be enjoyed in smaller groups?

Thanks for any advice or insight you might be willing to provide.

Regards,

Again, easy to drag your brother elsewhere.

Why would I do that? I can have characters on other servers and can still go back and play on Iron Citadel too. I don't like the queues, but honestly, I am not that upset -- I usually get in queue when I get home and then I'm able to play 35 or 40 minutes later. No big deal.

You can easily solo TOR from level 1-50 if you don't mind skipping heroics/flashpoints [or going back to them later when you can solo them with your companion].

Think of it as a single player game in a multiplayer world which is purely optional.

It's very easy to pick up as the starter areas do a very good job at easing you into the game.

I'm also a MMO noob and will be getting this game tommorow. What is a recommended class for a beginner? I was thinking my first character would be a bounty hunter powertech (tank) and I'd be basically soloing my first playthrough. For my second character I'd want to play with others so I was thinking a smuggler/scoundrel for support.

It is pretty easy to solo with that class as you get a healer as your first companion, so you're pretty hard to kill. However, if you group with others they're going to expect you to know a few things about tanking. Most of it before end-game content is pretty easy and you should be able to figure out a lot of it by reading the tooltips on all your abilities.

You had to, I played WoW at launch and multiple accounts throughout the years, and I've always had to input my CC.
