At one time people played UO solely to upgrade their houses and run vendors. They paid thousands and hundreds of dollars for prime real estate locations. Gear grinding isn't the only thing that will keep people playing. It is however very easy to do.
Creating homes and building up a community will keep people playing too.
That being said of course the developers of TOR looked at the business model of WoW, they also probably looked at almost every big MMORPG to see what they could improve and what kinds of mistakes to avoid. If they didn't, they need to receive a few pink slips.
The end product is what will tell, Bioware however does have a good track record and they do have the funds and resources to pull this off. Now we'll just see if they've been following a good development plan and listening to feedback. Which from the lightsaber hilt incident, they do appear to do.
