Whoa... what? TF2 isn't an MMO title , and they certainly weren't the first to go to microtransactions. I know of at least 2 other games that ARE MMOs and went free to play well before TF2... why not blame them?

You sure about that? I think it's the leading online hat simulator to date.

But yes, I think TF2 made MT's viable for a paid game more so than any other game. The amount of success they have had got even a game like EVE's attention.

Name an extremely sucessful freedom based MMO? I played Ultima Online for 7+ years and that was the definition of freedom. However, at its peak it has 300,000 active subscribers. The masses want a game that isn't completely dependent on your own imagination. It is always good business to cater towards the masses because they are far greater than the minority, even if they don't bitch about things nearly as much.

EVE is fairly popular as MMOs go.

Now name an extremely successful WoW clone.

Except most of the WoW Clones have sold fairly well compared to those that weren't. I would love a UO type Star Wars MMO that was completely open, but it just isn't what most people want. I don't think TOR will fail due to it being, not only a Bioware WoW clone, but a Star Wars game. The fan base is large enough to sustain it. So long as they don't have a medic class sitting in the catina all day, whose only purpose is buff people. That was almost as bad as "no jedi for you lawl" SWG idea.

I wouldn't say they sold well. They may have sold OK, most never recoup their development costs, and the subscriber base withers after a couple of months.

There were a lot of people who enjoyed hanging out in a cantina or being a dedicated crafter. Just because SWG wasn't your type of game doesn't mean it was bad. It was mishandled.

CE's on Origin are sold out (for now?). I preordered one on Amazon and got my early access code immediately. I opted for the CE because of the authenticator and in game goodies, but I'm a little irked about the inflated price from the statue. Oh well, it's not like I buy that many games these days, and I do like Star Wars and want to support Bioware.

As a WoW clone, how well is Rift doing? If anyone knows? Is it the most well known clone?

From what I can tell it sold a bit over a million copies. Who knows how many are still subscribed. Being generous we'll say that half are still there. It's still 5% of what WoW is. There simply isn't room for a WoW clone.

I got Rift and didn't keep my account beyond the free month. It's not bad by any means. I actually like a lot of features it has, but after playing WoW for over seven years I don't need a near clone.

My friend preordered the collectors edition a could hours ago. For $150, it better give blowjobs.

It's actually $170. 🙂

$150 + $20 pre-order fee.

I was amazed... it's sold out already. Incredible.

Isn't 500,000 subscribers enough to remain in business? Isn't 100,000, for that? Assuming of course you don't have an extremely bloated initial development cost...

It should be, I can't imagine EQ or EQ2 has more than 500K each and they've been keeping those going for a long time.

Hopefully what TOR failing will finally do (and it will fail) is show the idiot bean counters running these gaming conglomerates that the way to make money on an MMORPG is not do what has already been done, but to do something new and interesting. There have been many WoW clone failures, but nothing will be as spectacular as the hit they're going to take on this one.

Uhhhhhh... it was $149.99 from Amazon. No "pre-order fee".

Exactly. I just did that with the Collector's Edition. Amazon sent me the code right away. I can always downgrade or cancel. And I'm not charged until shipment.

Also get best price gaurantee

There have been many WoW clone failures, but nothing will be as spectacular as the hit they're going to take on this one.

WoW clones have failed because they're from no-name studios with unheard of, vanilla IPs and they have to work incredibly hard to just make people pick up the box, let alone try and buy. WoW had the advantage of a history of successful games from the same IP and same developer. SWTOR will hit the ground running in a similar way, if not even more so, as SW certainly trumps WC in terms of fanbase and Bioware is probably on equal footing with Blizzard as far as industry prowess is concerned. SW doesn't have quite the gaming lineage as Warcraft however, either way WoW hit the ground running and ToR likely will too, it has tremendous momentum and hype without even trying.

And at least for the time being, everything is a spectacular failure in relation to WoW. But with that said it's unfair to criticize Aion and Rift and their ilk as failures with (probably) a couple hundred thousand subscribers when EVE is a so-called success with roughly the same numbers. I'd say they're all successes in their own right, and I'd go so far as to say the line you draw between MMOs isn't so much defined by gameplay as it is by the scale of the IP and developer.

Um. I keep Origin running most of the time and I just got a pop-up telling me :

"Use your new Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ password to login to Origin if you pre-ordered the game"

Except that I don't even see TOR listed on Origin to order it even I wanted to right now.

People that play MMOs don't give a shit about voice acting and cutscenes. They skip those things and get to the grinding and killing.

They do that because the cutscenes usually suck and there are walls of text instead of actual voice acting.

Having a much stronger, cinematic story makes this VERY DIFFERENT from WoW. Calling this a WoW clone is idiotic and whiny.

the cutscenes are usually garbage.

But I think the real reason people skip them is because they are running through the same garbage for the 5th or 6th time on a different character. No one wants to deal with that crap while power-leveling and advancing yet another character on to end game content.

If the story is good enough, I certainly would sit through this stuff on one play through. But for a 2nd and 3rd...certainly not.

Considering the boxed CE's are limited - you could buy one and then resell it on ebay for a huge mark up 🙂 And then just order the digital version to play the game...

not a bad idea.

some of those rare WoW CE's go for astronomical prices, don't they?

of course...one has to assume the game will be successful for years, and that the CE content will prove to be worthy of such value in a secondary account.

Uhhhhhh... it was $149.99 from Amazon. No "pre-order fee".

Great. So I bought direct from EA and this cost me 5% more... ($5 fee on a $60 game)wonderful.

Next time before I run out and buy something I need to read AT first.

I preordered the CE..but I'm not Naive enough to think that I'm getting a 1 of 50,000 box.

They will make a TON of CE's..the only thing that makes them more of a rarity will be the astronomical price.
