I think the space program helps in ways that are hard to measure. I remember when I was a little kid the space shuttle was still pretty new, and it captured the countries attention as it was amazing to watch. Fascinating things like this inspire kids to want to learn about science. I bet you that many scientists today chose that field because of the impression from the space program.

Now you hear people say how it's a waste of money and that we should abandon it, and spend the money on more mundane projects at home. That would be a huge mistake. For one, when you spread that money out over the country it's just a drop in the bucket. Also it makes people lose their ambition, and they'd have nothing to strive for. At least the program gives kids a vision.

Consider the space program to be "government advertising for science education".

I'm in the 'abandon the shuttle' camp -- not because we need to do 'things at home' but because we need to FORCE nasa to finally create a next generation space vehicle. The shuttle is really neat, but it never was an ideal launch system, and it's time to move on.

Hey! You just bought a new LCD/TV/CAR/HOME...that's money that COULD have gone to a better cause!

I'd say there are a lot bigger wastes of money around than a program that could lead to the exploration of the universe and perhaps saving all of humanity from things like killer asteroids.

Yeah, the space shuttle itself is very inefficient.

I think the original purpose was that people thought it was a waste to abandon a big, fully working spacecraft in space every time you launch a rocket. But when you do the math, the cost of fuel/engines to lift such a heavy vehicle into space and bringing it back far exceeds the cost to just launch your payload into space with a smaller rocket and just leaving it there.

Let's say you want to put 60,000 lbs in orbit. Normally you'd choose a large rocket, but we have no large rocket anymore, we need to use the Shuttle for that. So now instead of just lifting 60,000 lbs, the Shuttle needs to lift 200,000 lbs of the Shuttle, plus the 60,000 lbs of payload. With the fuel and everything installed, the total liftoff weight is 4.5 million lbs.

I think we should it the way Russia did in the 1980's. They had a heavy lift rocket called Energia, and if they really needed a manned Shuttle for something, they had Buran that strapped onto it. Buran had no engines, it was just a glider. Of course the SU ran out of money and collapsed before they could really put this into use.

We should build a large heavy lift rocket, and build a more modern, simpler shuttle (without engines) for uses where you need people up there.

It's not like you can just throw money at problems and pay them off to go away. You sound like you have no idea what you're talking about. You're making it sound like we have a definite choice- cure cancer or have a space program.

Sheesh, maybe Bill Gates shouldn't have spent all that money on his house and instead just paid to make himself live forever.
