Chalk me up for hating the controls as well. Supremely frustrating. I didn't mind them on RE4 as I played it on Wii. I only played for about 5 minutes last night, so I'm going to go back to it this afternoon, but it's just feels SO clunky.

Has anyone tried this in co-op? Does it improve the experience at all? (ie, is it like a Left4Dead in that if you don't play it as co-op you might as well not play it).

I don't think the problem lies in the inability to move while shooting as much as the difficulty in seeing where you want to shoot. Seems like another game that would work much with Wii and/or Keyboard/Mouse controls.

Sorta, I bought RE4 for the Wii yesterday which has identical controls to the RE5 demo (although they feel a bit faster/smoother) as well as the ability to use the remote/nunchuk...I greatly prefer the controller. Maybe it's just because I got so used to it playing the GC version of the game though.

I remember when RE4 came out, everybody defended RE4 and the inability to move while shooting and simply chalked it up to making the game more dramatic. I always hated it and felt like it was a cheap gimmick. I'm glad people are finally seeing this as a problem in RE5, because it just ruins the game for me.

Yeah, I'm in agreement with the negative comments here. I loved RE4, but the RE5 demo just felt outdated. The visuals are amazing, but the gameplay is clunky and annoying. I'll still play this, but probably later rather than sooner. I like my action games to control like action games.

I feel the same as well, it's more like RE4.5 than RE5. Yes, RE4 was great, but it came out four years ago and I guess the gameplay doesn't hold up to today's standards/expectations.

Wait, you couldn't shoot while moving in RE4?

I thought I remember walking around with my gun drawn?

I guess I just imagined what should be happening, :p.

EDIT: Seriously, with the way RE has evolved, they might as well make it a third person shooter. The survival horror part of the game is gone, so I don't see why they don't just make it an action shooter that controls well. The way it is now, it seems that no one on either side of the camp is happy.

since its identical to the japanese demo. its possible that since then they've made tweaks. I'd like Chris to move freaking faster.

You've got a run button. You'd think having an analog stick would cover that already, but this game is full of mysteries.

Hmmm, I was a big fan of the original RE on the PS, but I don't know, this version didn't do a lot for me. Maybe it's because I just got through playing the FEAR2 demo (LOVED it) and the controls are so different in RE5. I'm so used to moving and shooting, this stop and shoot business is not faring with me too well.

It's more of an annoyance than a challenging gameplay style.

This, I'm fairly certain they are trying to keep to their "roots" on the controls and keep them similar to the entire series which has been very clunky, I thought RE4 was awesome and gave more control freedom compared to the older games. If you don't believe me try loading up the original again and play that for a day, the controls are almost unbearable.

Anyway played the demo and liked it, looking forward to the release personally.

Quote from a guy on Hardforum about what he thought...

bpizzle1
I just got done playing the demo with my cousin using the online co-op feature. overall i enjoyed it quite a bit...much more so than playing alone. we chose to play the "shanty town" stage, and i must say that the added feature of co-op really adds a whole new dimension to the RE series. there are more zombies this time around, and yes they do come from all sides, but when your playing co-op it is easy remedied with a little voice chat. the part of the level that had the girl jumping to the next building and going down to unlock the door was my favorite part in the demo. it was cool getting to help her out by sniping zombies from across the way while she was laying out some mp5 fire. the "boss" fight versus the chainsaw zombie was also enjoyable. by the time we reached the end we were low on health and only had a clip or two of pistol ammo left. we ended up kiting the boss around and blowing the barrels when he got too close to them.

my experience with the demo:

graphics- 10/10 - the game looks gorgeous and the frame rate was very solid even with lots of zombies and running

sound- 8.5/10- sound was solid throughout, the only complaint i had was the pistol sound...just like in RE4 it sounds like a pop gun.

gameplay- 9/10- yes, ill agree controls are pretty clunky for this day and age. it took me a while to get used to them, but it also took me a while to get used to the RE4 controls. not being able to move and shoot can get annoying, but once you accept the fact that that's the way it is and plan around it, it's really not bad. co-op is exactly what the series needed imho, and it seems they implemented it very well so far--you can give items to each other very easily, if you're close enough and use an herb it heals both players since its a spray, etc.

will most likely be picking this one up next month.

I really think this is going to be the way to play the game. Going through RE4 again I've "died" SO many more times from having Ashley killed (one hit kills FTW...) than from myself dying. At one point last night I downed an enemy by shooting him in the legs and went to slice him, she ducked down right in front of her and died with 1 slice...having an intelligent partner who can lay down fire while you relocate would make it MUCH easier. I've talked to two or three different people who only played it co-op and all of them, while not loving the controls, seem to like the overall experience alot more than those who've played SP only or both.

I feel the same way, also the game reminds me a LOT of RE4.

If it didn't they did something wrong. RE4 was a huge hit, why not build off a winning recipe. I agree though, the controls need to be faster.

I gave this one a shot last night for 10 minutes between L4D versus matches. This is my first time to play a RE game, and I must say I am not impressed. I like the graphics, its nice! But just the button combos, I have never liked. Even back in the Mortal Combat days, I never did like having to hit 3 or 4 buttons at a time to figure something out.
I will give it another shot, but to me right now.. Im just glad I tried it before I bought it.

3 or 4 buttons at a time? I'm really confused...where do you have to do that? You have to hold the aim button to shoot or reload (been that way since the original RE) and at least in RE4 every once in a while you have to hit 2 buttons at the same time to dodge an attack (usually during a cutscene), but I can't think of any other instances.

played the demo in co op mode, very fun...my only beef is aiming is trash! And is running + shooting still not possible? :p I LIKE how hard it is...it's not all that strait forward...and zombies dropping ammo = lol.

If you like that you'd love crows dropping hand grenades in RE4 :p

 that is golden! haha I miss the originals....scared the shit out of you, and had great plots/story lines.

I hold a special place for the originals because of nostalgia and such but not for the old controls, I mentioned this earlier in the thread but it keeps getting mentioned. If you think these controls are bad and have the means you should go check out the originals again. This and RE4 are much improved compared to the old ones. Talk about difficult to control, it was tough to even get the character running much less turned the right way to shoot and once you had your gun up it was three options straight, down or up.

I haven't played RE since PS1 and DC days, and man, this game is horrible.

I was expecting something great with all the hype, but aside from looking pretty good, there isn't much there. Coop could be fun, but its hard to get past its other flaws to actually enjoy it.

All IMO anyways.

yeah, this was my first time playing an RE game. the controls and aiming is terrible. i have a couple dozen zombies and a behemoth with a huge axe chasing me, and i have to STOP MOVING to aim? what the hell is that?

definitely not what i was expecting.

I'm right with you there. I gave it a good half hour last night, open minded wanting to like it.... but I will not be buying this game. I deleted the demo after trying all the controller configurations, adjusting the speed of aiming and everything, and I just really do not like the controls at all.
