Canucks fire head coach Crawford

Marc Crawford is out as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.

General manager Dave Nonis made the announcement during a news conference at GM Place. He said Crawford was a good friend and that it was a difficult decision, but the team needed a kickstart.

"The decision to relieve Marc of his duties was a very difficult one for me to make," he said. "Our club has enjoyed a lot of growth and success under Marc and his staff. I feel very privileged to have worked with Marc over the last seven years and believe strongly that our organization took tremendous strides under his leadership behind the bench."

The Canucks finished ninth in the Western Conference this season with a 42-32-8 record - the first time since 2000 they didn't make the playoffs.

"This decision is about the future," Nonis added.

"Our club once again needs to become one of the hardest working teams in the League. We need to ensure that our attention to detail is second to none in the NHL."

Crawford, who was hired in 1999, took the Canucks to the playoffs four times and holds the franchise record of 246 wins. But the Canucks won just one playoff series and twice lost a Game 7 on home ice under his leadership.

Crawford, 45, had one year left on his contract, which paid him $1 million US a season.

The native of Belleville, Ont., began his NHL coaching career with the Quebec Nordiques in 1994 where he became the youngest coach to win the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year. He led the Colorado Avalanche to a Stanley Cup title in 1996.

Crawford played his entire six-year NHL career with the Canucks.

Nonis, who also worked closely with Crawford when he was assistant general manager, said the coach took the news well.

"He was very thankful for the time that he's had here," he said. "He would have liked another year to get back at it. But he's been around this game a long time. He handled it very well. Probably better than I did."

The team did not name a replacement yet, but names already being rumoured are Manitoba Moose head coach and former Montreal Canadiens coach Alain Vigneault and former Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Pat Quinn.

Trade possibility?
Trade Bertuzzi for Sundin

LETS GO RED WINGS!!!

Putting Ozzy in net is just BS, Manny doesn't score goals, so it's his fault, just like it was CuJo's fault...ffs, it's the whole team not the netminder

I wouldn't mind that trade, but won't hold my breath.

I think that would be a bad bad move on the Canucks' part. They can do a lot better than Sundin.

Crawford is now the best coach without a job. I predict he'll end up in the East somewhere next season. I can't believe the Canucks fired him. I guess I'm just not too big on firing coaches with winning records like that. Oh well, heads will roll when teams miss the playoffs... someone's gotta take the hit.

John: I would have stayed up, but I was very very very angry and foresaw my remote flying through my TV screen. Had to call it a night.

Besides, aren't you on the West coast?! You didn't even stay up late you hoser :p ;)

I've been following my series. Avs up 3-0 in the series. Two come from behind wins! ... that is after they squandered the lead. I am hoping Theo gets comfy in net he doesn't look that confident yet, also made some less than perfect plays in last nights game.
The Devils will bust out the broom for a sweep, I think the Sabres will finish off the flyers in the next to games. I think the Avs could well drop one to the Stars but will rebound and win in 5. The other serieses (is that a word?) ... I haven?t watched much/any of, so "no comment" on those ;)

Hey it's pretty late consider your game started an hour before ours did and ended an hour after us! It was midnight on the West Coast! ;)

Anyways, best of luck to your Oil tonight. Take out them Wings!! :)

Bertuzzi has a lot of baggage though and Sundin is a fine player that would like compliment Naslund.

That's true. I'm not too fond of Sundin and Bertuzzi is a Western Conference guy so I'm a bit biased I guess. :)

Edit: Almost time for tonight's match ups. Go Sharks Go!

I'm rooting for the Oil to go up 3-1 against the Wings too! Go Oil Go!

I don't want Burtuzzi in the Northeast ;). You can keep him in the west, maybe him for some Dallas Stars or something.

They should trade Bertuzzi to Colorado. Man imagine the drama if that happened! :p

That sucks. We got the CBC feed of the Oiler game last night on OLN. We didn't see the Ducks/Flames game.

The Habs lost, the series is tied now.

Open letter to CBC: Dear CBC less Leafs more Sens. We all know who is better, and we have no desire to watch the Leafs the saturday before the playoffs start when everyone knows they wont make it. kthxbi

this is just plain embarrassing for the Rangers.

OMFG, lose 4 straight, 9 straight including the regular season.

only score 3 goals in 4 games vs the Devils.

it would have been better just to not make the playoffs.
