Canucks fire head coach Crawford

CP with TSN.ca Staff files

Marc Crawford is out as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.

General manager Dave Nonis made the announcement during a news conference at GM Place. He said Crawford was a good friend and that it was a difficult decision, but the team needed a kickstart.

"The decision to relieve Marc of his duties was a very difficult one for me to make," he said. "Our club has enjoyed a lot of growth and success under Marc and his staff. I feel very privileged to have worked with Marc over the last seven years and believe strongly that our organization took tremendous strides under his leadership behind the bench."

The Canucks finished ninth in the Western Conference this season with a 42-32-8 record - the first time since 2000 they didn't make the playoffs.

"This decision is about the future," Nonis added.

"Our club once again needs to become one of the hardest working teams in the League. We need to ensure that our attention to detail is second to none in the NHL."

Crawford, who was hired in 1999, took the Canucks to the playoffs four times and holds the franchise record of 246 wins. But the Canucks won just one playoff series and twice lost a Game 7 on home ice under his leadership.

Crawford, 45, had one year left on his contract, which paid him $1 million US a season.

The native of Belleville, Ont., began his NHL coaching career with the Quebec Nordiques in 1994 where he became the youngest coach to win the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year. He led the Colorado Avalanche to a Stanley Cup title in 1996.

Crawford played his entire six-year NHL career with the Canucks.

Nonis, who also worked closely with Crawford when he was assistant general manager, said the coach took the news well.

"He was very thankful for the time that he's had here," he said. "He would have liked another year to get back at it. But he's been around this game a long time. He handled it very well. Probably better than I did."

The team did not name a replacement yet, but names already being rumoured are Manitoba Moose head coach and former Montreal Canadiens coach Alain Vigneault and former Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Pat Quinn.

Ya, I like hom too. Not sure who could replace him, but a shakeup was expected and Nonis sounds like he has other plans that will be announced soon. I just don't want a repeat of the pre-Crawford era of constant change in coaching and players with litle to no change in outcome. That totally sucked!

Are they sore losers like their team?
At least they didn't pull a Darcy Tucker and intentionally injur one of our top guys.
On the contrary, Gauthier nailed Vanek from behind. He didn't get suspended for it, but he should have. Had Vanek not done a somersault, he could have been seriously injured. It was a boneheaded play, and the NHL is even worse for not suspending him. He was suspended for almost the same exact hit against a Toronto player near the end of the season. Surprise? Once again, the NHL shows where its favoritism lies. Not only that, but Derian Hatcher nailed Brian Campbell after the whistle and Mike Rathje forearmed him in the mouth. Time to grow up, Philly.

The one positive about keeping Gauthier in, however, is that he's pretty horrible on defense and can be counted on to give Buffalo a power play or two.
I don't think there is anything "contrary" about what you're saying, you and I agree.

Gauthier is an awful goon defenseman that shouldn't be playing in this league. He should have been suspended for the rest of the season for thhoes hits from behind. Forsberg, Hatcher, Rathje and Esche, oh hell the entire team, showed how easily they are rattled and how they react like cowards in turn. Since the rule changes their style of hockey doesn't work anymore, and with a team like Buffalo the stupid clutch and grab penalties they get will completely sink them in this playoffs and in all following seasons until they play real hockey. They have no chance in this round and they know it, so being the childish little sh!theads they are, they will try to hurt as many players as possible.

The league changed the rules to make it more appealing to the public, a faster higher scoring game, though their loyalty lies in old school, good based, defense laden slugfest.
Their roots are deeply planted. Oh well.

Wow, looks like we're on track for another Detroit upset... If the oilers knock them out that will be the third time in 3 years they're taken out when favoured!

Even though you're from Canada, I'm pretty sure you can accept the fact that:

1. Zero Wing D in front of the goal during a 2nd overtime.
2. Babcock will be coaching AAA baseball next year.

Ken Holland will consult the double-secret brain trust and transfer that info to Mikey before the next game.

I hope Osgood starts game 4. Manny let in some bad goals. I still have faith in Detroit. They did show they can score on EDM.

LETS GO RED WINGS!!!

word! WOOOO!!!

OMG a crab icon rooting for the Sharks. I thought it was Aquaman at first. ;)

Sharks played a great game. Despite the D screw up on the PP that lead to the only Pred goal, the Sharks did an excellent job at shutting down their offense.

Go Sharks Go!

Sampson you really think the East is better than the West? I guess we'll see won't we ;) I don't agree or disagree, I just like to pick people's brains.

...

Ok I think the West is better :p

Anyway... I went to bed after regulation because I was too pissed off and tired of the Oil giving up leads. They pulled it out though... WOW.

If Maltby doesn't score that wonky goal in game 1 that rebounded in off of his shaft though, this series could be 3-0.

I'm very pleased with the effort of the Oilers though... they came very close to getting schooled after deciding to sit back and try to protect a lead. Thankfully Roloson is playing exceptionally well, at least positionally - which he is known for.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I noticed that talked about DET / EDM on Pardon the Interruption tonight :Q

Go hockey go! :p (& go Oilers)

Can't believe les Habitants are poised to go up 3-0 on the Canes. WOW!

Yeah I saw the Lecavalier / Chara thing... all I have to say is that it's pretty weak of Vinny to try and sucker Chara when the linesman comes in to break up the fight. He's lucky Chara didn't drop the hammer on him when he got him down. That man is a FREAK! Nothing scarier than a freak than can throw 'em! :Q

You missed a great finish. Not to mention(oops) the earlier finish when the replay had everyone going "WTF?".

That Chara fight was pretty funny. The best part of that game though was Neil and Dingman, I was laughing pretty hard, I thought Neil would have fought.
