Man, I'm jealous. I've always wanted to play hockey, but I only ever skated once before this winter. I took skating lessons in Nov/Dec but I need to practice more and it seems like it'll be a long time before I'm at a point where I can actually play in a beginner league.

There doesn't seem to be a good path for an adult to learn to play hockey.

Yeah, it can be tough. As others have said, just try to get on the ice when you can.

Some arenas will have a 90 instructive session for adult beginning hockey players on a weekly basis, these are good to learn. They'll do shooting and stickhandling drills, and then finish with a scrimmage.

I'm pretty sure Floyd Hall in Montclair has one, but I think that's far from you. Call around or check websites to see if any of the rinks near you do this.

Bridgewater Sports Arena and Rock Ice Center both have hockey clinics, but I need to learn to skate a lot better before I attempt that (and at that point I'll need to buy all of the pads, so far I just have skates and a helmet).

I really hate back to back games. It seems like any time I watch the Preds play the 2nd game they always lose. I don't know the %'s but I'd say it's a safe bet that teams playing two nights in a row lose way more often than not against teams who did not play the night before.

game wasnt televised so i didnt see this last night...jesus, that was terrible

larose has been getting scrappy lately, which is a shame, because hes not remotely good at it. harrison can kinda sometimes not get his ass kicked, at best, but clearly chad cant even manage that. that was embarassing.

larose also checked chara last week into the glass, and gave a high stick at the same time that busted charas nose...hes lucky the giant didnt pummel him to the ice then and there.

Holy Weekend at Bernies Batman, they put Humpty Dumpty back together again?

I give it a week before he suffers some kind of organ failure. :colbert:

We'll see, for now he is just practicing with the Avs - hoping to start playing with the Avs shortly after the All-star break.

He is supposedly at 95-100%, and last time he came back to play for us in 2008 he admitted he was at 70-80% at best, and was still a PPG or better player for us.

People around the hockey world seem to think it might be a real comeback, we'll see.

Trying not to get my hope's up, but its hard

last day before all star weekend...anyone visiting the area to check everything out? Im going friday to the fan fair and Raleigh Wide Open to do some things, hope to get some autographs and try some good local beers (raleigh has a few microbreweries in the area) and then tailgate the skills comp before it starts.

Is he trying to permanently injure his foot just to play a couple more games in the NHL?

Huge blow for the Canucks, Edler is out for back surgery after that Dallas game. Their PP looked real ugly without him on the point yesterday too.

Definitely work on your endurance if nothing else. I took a clinic way too early, and learned a couple of lessons to get the most out of it:

- Show up in good cardiovascular shape. Nothing is as tiring as hockey skating.
- Stopping is your most important skill to have before showing up. Sounds ridiculous, but during drills, there are a lot of guys in a little space. Be able to do a snowplow and hockey stop.

Beyond that, just have a good sense of humor and don't overthink your own ability. You're all there to learn. Even if the place is like mine, where the clinic is open to all skill levels, the veterans have a lot of patience with the beginners. When I was in the locker room dressing for my first session, I was just making small talk and and asking about how good everyone is. The guy looks at me, goes, "As long as you're not putting the right shin pad on the left leg, you're set." Have a sense of humor. Also, don't be afraid to push yourself a little. At beginner speeds, nothing really hurts much - boards, falling, etc. Even backwards, your pants, helmet, and elbow pads stop everything.

If the rink has stick and shoot, where you just show up in anything from helmet, gloves, and stick to full gear, that's a good way to get acquainted. I went to those as much as I could first.

Also, for pads, check out hockeygiant.com. You don't need great gear to get started. You can cut corners on the shoulder pads, especially.

that's too bad... i've seen some pretty noob skaters show up to pickup hockey where i used to play thursday nights... and there are a couple icetimes on other nights where the skill level is nothing close to our pickup.....

if i were you i would just see if there are any pickup icetimes available... go watch and see what the skill level is like... you never know, sometimes there are some really noob players. all you need to do is be as good as the plugs... heheh

all the icetimes i know of are just for fun... no refs obviously but always 2 tenders and enough skaters for 5 and 5 and at least 3 on the bench... go out for a skate just to get a feel for it, tell them you're new, then you have at least an idea of what skill level you need to get to... good luck...

man i wish there were earlier icetimes for me... most thursday nights i get too lazy to go... it's from 10pm to 11:30 and costs 15 bucks... frickin epic skate... i love it

that's awesome! get some pics 🙂

wish i was going... looking forward to the draft tomorrow night, i think it will be interesting.

looks like the Oilers will be getting another decent draft pick at least... lol

friday was good....the fan fair was packed to hell, so i didnt wait in lines but just wandered around getting pics and such. we got pics of lots of the mascots (they were all there, and the blue jacket is fucking scary)

also got the white/red all star jersey and hat, cheaper than i expected so i splurged.

we went outside and saw peter laviolette and i got his autograph, hoping to head downtown again today and see who else we can run into. i want to get my jersey signed by skinner but...ill probably try to get that after a game some time, the line for his autographs will be ridiculously long (especially since stamkos is right before him)

awesome

we didnt get selected to sit in on the draft and went out drinking, the beer selection at the fan fair was "bud light" which i wont drink, and definitely will not pay for.

As a fan of the Sabres, who play more back-to-back games than any other team this season (22 sets, or more than half of their games), I understand. You've got it somewhat easy though, only 3 teams have fewer back-to-back games this season than Nashville.

thats ridiculous. i like hockey because its entertaining...but its not when you have to watch an assload of games with tired teams doing so many back to backs. i wouldnt mind a handful of games being dropped from the season to cut down on that.

skills comp live was AWESOME

ill put up some pics soon, my camera is an average point and shoot but my friends have DSLRs

The skills competition was great. I loved the way 20 cent Kane slammed his stick on the after D. Sedin beat him in the accuracy shooting.

yeah, sedin owned that.

i liked how tim thomas sped off skating...if he hadnt tripped he would have soundly beaten cam ward around the ice

/cam has a lot of practice skating away from the crease
