They do, you're correct. The problem with this loss is that MJD didn't beat them -- Garrard did. MJD has quite a few yards but he didn't break anything big. Garrard was the one who made the plays to beat them. I am at a loss to describe what the heck the Colts were thinking. Leaving the Jags 50 seconds to drive down to FG range was dumb to begin with, but Garrard completing the long pass to get them in FG range and then Hayden dropping a game-winning interception that hit him square in the numbers is just inexplicable. Make no mistake, if Hayden holds on, he has a TD and the Colts win in regulation.
 
This season is really hard to read so far. There seems to be a lot of parity so far this season. Sucky teams that you would imagine would lose (Rams, Jags, Browns, Chiefs) win, sucky teams you expect to get blown out play tough (I'm looking at you, Detroit), and the teams you expect to be good (Bengals, Colts) struggle. Even the Ravens seem to be a little inconsistent.

Jags always play the Colts tough, so I knew it would be close but I didn't dream in a million years the Colts would let Garrard beat them.

I'm a steelers fan, so I don't have too much to complain about. Nothin' like starting the season 3-1 with your 4th string QB at the helm 😎

Except for the fact that arguably the only decent team you've played so far -- the Ravens -- beat you. So I'd say the jury is still out.

Nevertheless, I'd kill to have Dick LeBeau be our defensive coordinator instead of one of Caldwell's washed up friends.
 
Jim Caldwell is actually not the coach. He's a mannequin standing on the sidelines with a headset on. Peyton is really the coach. Since he doesn't know a lick about defense the defenses just goes by what they know from scrimmaging against Peyton, which is defending the pass.

I have serious concerns about Caldwell. Let's see how he performs a few years down the road when most of Dungy's former players have left. Keep in mind, Caldwell was a head coach at the collegiate level once before and had an awful record (26-63). One of his first moves was "encouraging" Dungy's old DC Ron Meeks to leave. While that made a lot of us happy, he brought in Larry Coyer (formerly of the Broncos), who was not known as a great DC. He was Caldwell's buddy though, so I guess that was his big selling point. D:

Bob Sanders WAS your defense. Without him they are so easily exposed, even before Coyer. But since he can't stay on the field...

Whats interesting is Sanders likes to hit people. Thats the quality of players on teams with elite defenses (pittsburg, baltimore, jets, etc.). Besides Sanders noone on the Colts have that quality. If you hit people hard on defense, the pain gets into the head of the players and it affects their play. You need a DC that instills toughness in the team. You guys should probably try to grab Singletary as your DC once the season ends cuz you know he's going to be fired from the 49ers. It worked for the Saints to help them bring them over the top when they signed Gregg Williams.

Freeney and Mathis called. They beg to differ.

I don't disagree with your assessment, but no matter how good Sanders is, he doesn't help when he misses over 50% of his games. The Colts just can't afford to give up that roster slot and cap space for someone who misses entire seasons routinely. Sanders could have helped us greatly yesterday, no doubt, but unfortunately, his career is probably over even if he is "healthy" again.

No argument on the DC. It is time for the Colts to get serious and bring in an A+ coordinator instead of some guy where the thinking is "As long as they can slow the other team down and maybe have a couple of stops, that's all our offense needs!"

Yes they are, but yesterday's Colts defense just stunk it up. There was little to no pressure on Garrard. The colts offense did what it always does, march down the field the stunning precision and regularity. But when you turn it over twice in the redzone and your D can't stop the other team - you ARE going to lose.

I remember when the Colts stopped the last play before the field goal and I was all giddy - "They're out of field goal range!". Guess not.🙁
 
freeney and mathis are great but it's the safeties that helps bring the defense together. the steelers suffered without polamalu last year, and the ravens aren't the same without ed reed. even new england's defense isn't the same anymore without harrison. they help out in stuffing the run and in pass coverage.

imo, freeney and mathis are better pass rushers than run stuffers.

Peyton is the 12th man on defense for the Colts.

I fully agree. The Colts need to draft a high safety if they can next year or sign a FA vet that is proven.

Yeah, Sanders definitely would've helped yesterday esp. since Bullitt was banged up for a few plays.

imo, freeney and mathis are better pass rushers than run stuffers.

100% correct. The Colts have been trying to find the DTs to complement them and so far, they're still experimenting.

And Hayden had a floater from Garrard hit him in the numbers with no one in front of him. My neighbors probably heard me scream "Noooo! G.D. IT!" when he dropped it. 🙁

Don't worry, the Colts are not the only team who have a very potent Offense and a pathetic D. The only good thing is that it can't get worse, or so you hope it wont.

It can't get much worse to be honest. I would've almost rather have seen MJD run over the Colts D and beat us rather than seeing Garrard but us. Garrard beating us is highly disturbing.
