The combination of horrifically bad officiating and completely classless play calling from the Saints (leaving in a starter and passing when you're up by 22 with 3 minutes left, record or not) has made me truly hate this game tonight.

I would like it if the extremely biased officiating gets cleaned up before the playoffs for sure.

There were some questionable calls, but I really don't blame them for going for the record when he was that close.

Saying there were some questionable calls is like saying that during 2005 New Orleans got "some rain" in August. The Saints would almost guaranteed have won even if the officiating was fair, but Drew Brees would not have made the record tonight. The Saints had an extra 6 men in black and white stripes on the field the whole night.

Atlanta had 11 more penalty yards than New Orleans. I will give you the questionable late hit/helmet-to-helmet early in the game, but don't act like that doesn't happen every week.

I cannot tell you how many times the Saints have been called for questionable roughing the passer flags. If you are a good team you overcome it. You don't allow the Saints to run for 7.1 yards per carry, and only get 2.5 yourself.

Must be a Falcons fan...no one in their right mind should have a problem with leaving Brees in the game when he was that close to breaking the record.

The Falcon's had an option here, playing better defence namely. Next Sunday may see Rogers and Brady eclipse that mark too although with as much punishment Brady has taken lately I'd rather they sit him if they get a sizable lead vs Buffalo next Sunday.

LOL....I love it when people say running up the score is classless. Do not want to get embarrassed? Play better. It's that simple. If anything, you show a team disrespect by pulling out your starters. It's kind of like saying, "well, you guys suck so badly, our starters are not even worth playing". No team wants to be disrespected like that.

Agreed.

Anyway in this case aren't passing plays by the opposing offense more likely to result in badly needed turn overs that could have brought the Falcons back in the game? Running out the clock gives the opposing team next to zero chance to win, which is why it is done most of the time.

I didn't see the end of this game though so I don't know what the score differential was when the "classless" play started happening.

Waaaaaah... either you're a butt-hurting Falcons fan, a Saints hater, or just a dummy. Nothing wrong with going for that record, even with a lead against the Falcons, who just happen to be the Saints biggist rivals.

It couldn't have happened any better than it did. Now move along.

Oh, Geaux Saints, and Geaux Tigers.

Either that, or he's CBS's Pete Prisco...

I could see if Brees didn't' have another week. But he does. Really questionable.

Falcons are pissed. But I would have have taken him out. Worth the fine. Worth the penalty.

I'd take a personal foul and a fine. For this? This is crap.

Mike Smith is too nice. I'd tell my players to hit Brees in the mouth.

Drew Brees must have had his way with this guys mom, or something.

Did Atlanta still have its defensive starters on the field when they were down by 22? Did they stop trying to win at any point in the game?

If the Saints had pulled their starters and there had been a couple freak plays where the Falcons scored two quick touchdowns would they, nonetheless, then stop trying to win because the Saints were nice enough to pull their starters?

These are not high schoolers or big college versus small college. This is two teams of millionaire professional football players, two playoff teams (The Saints are still trying to get a bye week and cannot afford a freak loss). If they don't like the other team playing their offensive starters, then they should stop the other team's offense and get them off the field themselves.

Either that or put on dresses.

Hah, it wasn't nearly as bad as you make it out to be. I recall one "defenseless receiver call" against Atlanta that would have been a first down anyway, followed by a similar hit from a saints defender that wasnt called. The big one was a PI called against Atlanta on third down when a defender wrapped an arm around Sprole's shoulder briefly during a pass that might not have been catchable anyway. That extended a drive that lead to a score. Everything else called I agreed with once I saw the replay.

On the other hand, Brees got sacked by the helmet, and no flag resulted.

Not blowing teams out when you have the chance is how Tebows (and more recently Orlovskys) are made.

technically speaking, couldn't Brady still pass him? They each have 1 game left with ~200 yrds separating them i think...

The Saints have kept Drew Brees late in games already this season when the game was in doubt. See: Saints game versus Rams. Fortunately, he hasn't gotten hurt, but I hope SF murders everyone on that team in the playoffs for payback from the preseason.
