Was he really doing that poorly?

From what little I saw of the 49ers (two games), their offense seems to have some issues, and a big receiver might help bail Smith out.

He was not doing crap, but it is still a "Whoa" at this point in the season and after a few WR injuries.

I guess his injuries were just too much to overcome.

The combination of horrifically bad officiating and completely classless play calling from the Saints (leaving in a starter and passing when you're up by 22 with 3 minutes left, record or not) has made me truly hate this game tonight.

I would like it if the extremely biased officiating gets cleaned up before the playoffs for sure.

haha i love when people cry about running the score up. that is what losers do.

No shit. What were the Saints supposed to do? Keep going 3 and out...and giving the ball back to Atlanta so they could have another chance to score?

Fuck that. It's the job of the team to score points. It doesn't matter if they're beating the other team by a huge margin...if they have the ball, they're expected to move it up the field and put points on the board.

This isn't "Pop Warner" football where everyone gets a trophy just because they showed up for the games...and there are rules that end the game when the scoring differential reaches a certain point.

I guess Harbaugh can look at Moss and TO to fill the receiver slots for the playoffs...

Was this done to free up a spot for someone else? I'm not sure how the rules are for that in the NFL.

I don't blame the Saints for going for the Marino record but it's borderline running up the score at that stage of the game. Look if it wasn't for the all-time passing record, they would have handed off the ball every down, up by 22. Record-breaking notwithstanding, every head coach in the NFL would have pulled their star QB for the last possession and would have exclusively ran the ball (probably with a 2nd string RB).

You can defend going after an all-time record as others have; but it's BS if you're defending throwing on every down with your #1 unit at the end of a rout.

What's BS about it? I agree that if Brees wasn't about to break Marino's record, Peyton would probably have pulled him to prevent injury...much like McCarthy did with Rodgers on Sunday night, but there's still no bullshit about it...and "running up the score" isn't poor sportsmanship...it's called playing football...and winning the game.

With 5 minutes left, the game was already won. Ever heard of not kicking a man when he's down? Same principle applies in boxing and also in football. If it's a rout, the head coach pulls some of the stars, partly to protect them from injury.

If you don't understand that it's not considered acceptable behavior to chuck it on every down at the end of a blowout, then I have nothing to add. Like I said, many defend Coach Payton's decision for Brees to try and break Dan Marino's record, and I won't fault him over it.

Guess what though, Prisco is right some Falcons' players took offense and they play the Saints twice every season and perhaps again in 2 weeks.

So the saints will sit Brees in the final game? since he already broke Dan's passing yards.

brady's 190 yards back. if they sit him it's possible for brady to pass him. also, NO would get the first round bye if they win and SF loses.

so, doubt they sit him.

Why doesn't anyone consider it just as insulting for the opposing team to put in their less skilled players as they do for them to keep their starters in and continue scoring? Hell, the second response is always more honest anyway. Competitive players and coaches always want to continue scoring. The only reason I accept the tradition of not running up the score in football is because it makes sense to not put your starters in unnecessary danger, and it makes sense to give your second stringers some game time experience. for this particular game, it made sense to keep the starters in at least some respect that I can identify with, so I'm all for it.

again ... the only people who have problems with "running up the score" are losers.

the falcons coach should thank the saints for showing his defense the gaping holes they had in their defense, even after 3 quarters of adjustments.

they should be thanking the saints for keeping a high intensity game to let the d gets as many of those real situation reps as possible, instead of doing hd dives 3x in a row then punting.

they should be thanking the saints for the 4 quarters of slaughtering they have on film so they can study and find their flaws of those 4 quarters on defense, and learn from their mistakes.

I'm biased because I'm a Saints fan, but I do have to agree that they should have let it come next game. Brees was trying to force it. With that said, I don't get the crying. No one cried when the Saints slaughtered the Colts. It's a home game with meaning against a division rival. There's no shame in hammering them. If they had come back, everyone would have called Peyton an idiot.

But, but, but the Falcons players' feelings will get hurt since New Orleans decided to continue the assreaming and didn't let up and put in their second and third stringers!!!!!!!!! You big meanie!!!

Next game is next game. What if Brees tears an ACL in practice during the week or cuts his throwing hand opening a DVD or gets food poisoning or anything else? Marino got a non contact injury before to end his season so it's not like it never happens.

Lol, Atlanta just last week against Jax was still throwing up 34-0 to make it 41-0 so complaining now that you're on the other end is a little laughable. It's not like it's uncommon. This week, Carolina was still throwing to go up 30+ points also.

Last year, the Eagles scored 28 points in the last 7 minutes of a game to come back.

It'd be totally different if it was high school or something where the teams might be grossly imbalanced but it's the NFL. Plus, Atlanta is a playoff team and they might see the Saints so it's to their benefit to see more first-team passing film for future use compared to being sore about it.

Somehow a notion still exists that the NFL must be played by gentleman’s rules. It’s a quaint thought, one long ago discarded in a modern, big money era of sports where offense, winning and fantasy stats sell more than ever. In other words, the Atlanta Falcons got paid well to play Washington Generals to Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints late Monday night.
<snip>
Yes, this was a risk for the Saints and for Payton, who could have inspired a cheap shot from a Falcons player, perhaps dooming New Orleans in the playoffs before they ever started. But that’s always the fear anytime a team steps on the field. This is, after all, a game of violence, played by large and angry men.

Not one where you worry about hurt feelings and drying tears over orange slices and a postgame juice box.

This is so funny because it's true. It's okay for Falcon fans to slaughter their opponent but when someone slaughters the Falcons, it's poor sportsmanship or running up the score? :)
