I take what he says with a big grain of salt. This is, after all the same guy who claimed Gary Payton and Mark Price had better years than this year's Nash (rofl). He's the same guy who said if Nash won the MVP, then Stockton should have, but never realized that Stockton played in the Magic/Micheal era. He's the same guy who said that Dallas will win Game 6 and 7, and that Dallas was the better team when it was obvious they weren't. IF they were so good, they wouldn't have scored only 74 points in Game 4. Good teams don't blow 13 and 14 point leads in the NBA Finals. Yet I digress.
As much as I like Simmon's pieces on the Red Sox, he should just stick to writing about baseball (his specialty). His theory that the future of the NBA is moving towards smaller lineups is wrong IMO. Dallas should have lost to San Ant, whose offense runs through a big man. And you saw how much trouble Zo/Shaq gave them. We saw Elton Brand absolutely skewer Phoenix, if you give them a D.Wade/Lebron superstar guard who can drive and pass, then the LAC win the championship. Good big men with a guard who can score and pass off the dribble will always be dominant. Give A.I. a Shaq/Zo and he wins it all. Give Kobe (after he learns to read defenses and find the open man better) a Shaq/Zo and he's a champion. There's no reason to believe that a smaller lineup/run and gun is the "new future" of the NBA. There were a couple of good teams in the playoffs that had this style, but ultimately they didn't have the defense to stop superstar scorers. Shaq/Zo consistently added an inside presence on defense that smaller teams just cannot compensate for IMO. Because remember, when teams want to slow down the tempo of a game, there's nothing you can do but play their half court game. That means forcing a smaller lineup to drive against a bigger defense, and unless they can consistently drain 3's like PHO (special case), they are toast.
Sorry but that guy knows jack about sports if his opinion is that a "fairly" called game was different than what happened over the course of this series. It may not have been called perfectly or entirely accurately but it was hardly unfair. There is a big difference there. One involves refs making mistakes in a split second, the other involves refs giving someone treatment they don't deserve.
All you people who are whining about foul calls on wade apparently never watched an NBA game before this series. If you touch someone on the arm while they are shooting, that is a foul. If you move into someone's way while they have the ball and are moving, it's a foul, EVEN IF THEY RUN INTO YOU WITH THEIR ELBOW. That is why they call it a BLOCKING foul. It's not a situation where "only superstars" get the foul. People who drive to the basket get fouled a lot. That's just how it works. If everyone were master defenders of the universe maybe then it wouldn't work that way. Instead everyone swarms on wade while he drives and then inevitably someone is going to foul him. There were a lot of non-calls on both sides as well, on both wade and others. The refs were letting them play to a point, until someone was taking a shot and it clearly had to be called.
Also hilarious beyond belief is actually complaining that terry did not get the foul call at the end. HELLO, that was actually good for the mavs at the time. He got an open 3 point shot. If they had called the foul, the game would have been over for sure because it was before the shot and thus it would have been 2 shots, unless by some unbelievable miracle the mavs could have fouled the heat and then scored in about 1 second with no timeout, or by some miracle terry made one and then missed and then the mavs got the rebound and put it in in under 1 second. Let's see, an open 3 point shot by your best 3 point shooter versus intentional miss, fortunate rebound, and shot in 2 seconds. So actually that was a questionable non coul in favor of the mavs.
There was only one genuinely erroneous foul call on wade I saw, but before the replay it looked like a foul, so it's hard to blame the refs. There was at least one "offensive foul" called on miami that was called incorrectly, again, because it looked like one. There was no favortism, just a few errors at best.
It's a same that this didn't go to 7 but I have to say that sooner or later either dirk would have a good overall game or haslem would, and in this case it was haslem. Once he started making the open shot, it was hard for dallas to win, because that made it 3 offensive threats. Dirk would have gotten a lot of foul calls too if he hadn't resorted to "old dirk" on offense. That's the dirk who always shoots back-leaning fade away jumpers instead of trying to take it to the hole and get fouled. He did take it to the hole when he didn't have the ball, just not when he had the ball and needed to score.
Before this series I really hated antoine walker, in that he was so selfish with the 3 pointers. Around game 3 I started changing my mind, because even though he was still jacking them up, he was also doing a lot of other good things. I think his stock rose during this series. I think josh howard's did too. Anyone who saw what happened and read the stuff afterwards will know that he didn't pull a chris webber. He was communicating with avery who was also signalling TO. Aside from that play, he had an excellent series IMO.

what happened is quite simple...in the biggest game of the Mavs season...their star players choked...I think Terry went scoreless in the 4th...and Dirk scored a whopping 2 points. His MO is to choke in the big games and that is exactly what happened. On the other side....what needed to happen....happened...role players needed to step up...and they did. Zo, Pose, Walker (3rd quarter) and especially Udonis came up big. I was actually surprised...I thought the Mavs at home was a lock for game 6...but obviously the Heat didn't buy into all the mumbo jumbo and came to win the game....and that's exactly what they did.

Uh... are we talking about dirk nowitzki? His MO is to be criminally insane in big games. In this series he was against form. I remember countless games in the playoffs where he single-handedly kept his team in the game for not only this year but the past 5 years at least.
How about that game where someone chipped his tooth and he returned and dominated?
Congrats to the Heat. They beat a more talented team (but young) with championship grit, good defense, and solid coaching.
There was somebody in this thread that thought Riley was overrated, which is obviously wrong. Riley and Shaq's experience were huge factors in their win. You have to give credit to their organization from the top down.

I thought he was overrated based on his previous coaching position with the heat many years back when zo was their center, and based on the first two games here. But he really showed his coaching chops in this series with his strategic changes and I admitted I was proven wrong. Whatever happened in that old heat team must not have been entirely his fault, although he did say he felt like it was at the time. It was the same scenario as games 1 and 2, with charlotte totally running them out of the building.
I'm glad most of my predictions came true. It really came down to the superstars on each team, with Wade being the only one to show up on the Heat. Dirk and Terry played good, but Wade and the tenacious D of the Heat was the deciding factor.
After watching the Heat win it all as a die hard fan since the inception of the franchise, the happiest feelings I had last night was when I saw the look on Mournings face as he stood on the podium. Love him or hate him, he is an inspiration to us all and he plays with so much heart and courage that if talent was based on effort alone, I honestly believe that ZO would be the most dominant center in the history of this league.. I mean can you imagine how much better Shaq would have been in his career if he played with the same intensity as Zo??

aside from being a bitter piston's fan.....i really don't think the Heat can keep up with the Mavs.
the only time the Pistons looked good vs. Miami was when they ran and attacked the glass. the Mavs run, slash, and attack the glass much better than the Pistons. no one on the Heat can guard Nowitski. sure, no one can guard Shaq, but I can see Dirk going off for 40 much easier than i can see Snaq going off for 40.
now, i hope that i've jinxed the Heat in the ECF's by putting them in the Finals
so basically you picked both teams to win...

check out the dates......i picked the Heat to win after i got to see the six game series the Pistons and Heat played. to be perfectly honest, i didn't think Wade was fully tested until he played vs. the Pistons. once i saw him excel vs the defenses we threw at him, i knew he was going to be quite a handful. also, i finally saw the Heat playing as a unit and their role players stepping it up vs. the Pistons. that prompted me to change my mind. i don't think anyone (even Heat fans) honestly thought they had a team that could seriously contend for the championship during the regular season. remember their record vs the top teams in the NBA? it was horrible. they brought it together at the best time possible.

second Anyone feel with all the interviews that Shaq been doing couldn't stand taking a backseat to wade? Wade performance is usually a topic they bring up.
He kept saying how he's made wade better etc.
We all saw what wade was capable of in his 1st season.
In the two years with Shaq, Wade's game hasn't changed much. Unlike Kobe which think has to partly credit Shaq for improving his range, Wade is still iffy from from long range. Last year I actually felt Shaq hindered Wade's development somewhat as Shaq becomes the focal point(passing skills). But this year its less with shaq's absence.
