There's also the problem that there's a huge mass of the player base that is already really, really good at the game. I can see it being really hard for new people to jump in without taking a savage beating for quite some time while they get up to speed. Single player does not really prepare you for multi in this game.
This is the biggest problem with casuals who can't seem to do well online. MW2 controls exactly the same as MW1, so lots of people have played this game for 2 years, then simply walked into new maps. Although there are a lot of new additions, nothing really changed for the most part. Just depends on how much you want to die before you learn the play style and speed.
