Official MLB 08: The Show thread.

Holy crap, what a baseball game! Every year, I try out the demos, and I'm always disappointed. For some reason, for me to play a baseball game, everything has to be perfect, from the animations to the graphics to the gameplay. If anything is off, it ruins the experience for me.

However, this afternoon, I downloaded the demo on the PS3, and I am amazed at what they've done with this game. First of all, the graphics are spot-on. I'm guessing it's running in 1080p, because it's absolutely gorgeous. Next time I play the demo, I'll check to see what resolution the PS3 sends to the TV. The player models are, basically, the best I've ever seen in ANY sports game, period. None of the players that I saw looked weird or just "off", they were all 99% faithful to their real-life counterparts. Everything else, from the stadium to the crowd to everything else looks fantastic.

Next up, the animation is superb. It's hard sometimes to see the seams from one animation to the next (although it is there occassionally). The animations are varied, also. These players and umps do all kinds of stuff, mostly in between plays. I've seen an outfielder throw grass up into the air to check the wind, I've seen the second-base ump stretch his legs a bit while a batter was getting set in the box, I've seen the first-baseman talking to the guy on first in between plays...there's a LOT of stuff in this. There are so many details in the animation, also, like Josh Beckett wiggling his fingers behind his back while I was trying to figure out what pitch to throw (pitcher cam needed to see this, obviously). It all looks so real. I even saw one of my guys biting his fucking lip after he was called safe after a slide into second. He called for time, stood up, brushed himself off, and started biting his lip while looking around. These are the details I love.

I also noticed that whenever you see dirt on a player's uniform, that dirt came from a specific play in the game. I had guys come up to bat later whom I remembered had did something specific that would justify the amount of dirt and where it was on their uniform.

Other little touches I loved was that the crowd actually fought/lunged for a ball hit into the stands, and every now and then you'll see a beachball being tossed around. 1st/3rd base coaches scurry out of the wall of a hard hit ball their way, and I once saw Beckett take his cap off, scratch his head, and put his cap back on on the way back to the dugout after ending an inning. When players take their caps off, it's absolutely seamless, the animation is superb.

Oh ya, the game plays pretty well, too. I won't go into any details, though, since I'm not really the foremost expert on how a baseball game should play. The controls feel tight, I never felt like the game screwed me out of anything, which is a good thing.

So, who else has played the demo and is looking forward to it?

yah i dl'ed the demo and it looks fantastic. i'm not big on baseball games at all but the graphics are amazing in this game.

I just really wish they weren't so damned lazy when doing crowds.

The crowds are way too freaking excited to be at a baseball game. I mean, I know the dev. is probably trying to put an air of excitement into the game, but when they crowd is on their feet cheering and screaming in the first inning of a normal game, it's a bit hokey.

Additionally, they repeated the crowd too much. In a lot of the shots you see no less than 8 identically modeled fans with the same clothes, doing the same animations at the same time. Lame.

I realize the focus of the game is on the players, but with such lengths taken to make the game seem like you're watching TV, fan reactions, etc. are a big part of the experience if you don't fast-forward through the foul ball replays, etc. like I do.

What finally drove me batty was a fan doing a "drink_from_cup" animation...without the cup.

I'm not entirely sure why the craptastical crowd bugs me, but it does. Playing the game was pretty fun, though, and that's saying something since I never play sports games 😉

I tried teh demo when it first came out.

I realize its only a demo btu I was bothered by how there's a huge swing in confidence.

I put two guys on and Josh Beckett's confidence drops. the pitcher meter speeds up like crazy. I follow that up with a fly out and his confidence is back to normal again.

the sound of contact is annoying too. It seems like you're driving golf balls.

The little touches however are very nice. I've played the 2k series for a long time so its nice to see some one else's baseball product.

Not sure if I'm gonna pick it up or not. Might have to read reviews and rent it. I typically pick up a major US sport game every other year unless its really good.

I love playing baseball, but hate watching games. And for some reason, I've always grown bored, rather quickly, with baseball video games. I'm gonna have to check this out, because after this and the IGN review, it really seems like a very well presented game. I'm thinking maybe I've just never been interested because the games lacked that realistic touch, and the presentation is key to sports games I think.
I actually look forward to giving this demo a try. Not sure when that'll be though... no motivation to go out of my way to play games at the moment... school's a bitch right now and I screwed up the majority of this quarter and need to get things in order. Last quarter I realized I had ADD. This quarter I let it get a hold of me (no prescription because of Army medical standards, can't get diagnosed properly either but it's basically determined I have it). These last few weeks are me determining the best methods to tackle it, and hopefully I can apply it to next quarter and the rest of my school career. And then life. heh

I thought the meter speeds up only because of the sped-up delivery that pitchers do when batters are on base. This is to make sure they don't have all the time in the world to steal a base while you're winding up. If nobody is on base, then the wind-up is much slower, giving you a much better chance to place the ball where you want.

Ya, agreed on the crowd being too excited, nobody ever seems to get the crowd just right in games. You'd figure the crowd would be the easiest thing to do. Make them sit when they are supposed to, make them boo when they are supposed to, make them stand up and cheer when they're supposed to...not too hard I think. Plus, with baseball, unless it's the World Series, they sit 95% of the time anyway.

But although I did see crowd repetition, too, I didn't find it to be distracting on the cut-away shots where you could see them. Most animations blended well enough together, it was the odd 2 or 3 people that looked the exact same, jumping up and down in sync.

anyone else picking this game up? im picking it up on my lunch break and hopefully i can squeeze a quick game in. when people came over and saw me playing the demo they were blown away but how realistically the game appears. cant wait.

you're correct. just like in real-life the pitcher will go to the slide-step delivery when runners are on base to get the pitch to the plate quicker.

I am so fucking tempted to buy this, but I need to wait. I'd rather pick up a used copy for $50 at Gamestop, but that could take a week or two, if not longer.

I would be a lot more fired up to grab this if my team didn't decide to sell off all their players the end of last season. 🙁
Oh well, at least Ellis, and Chavy are still there, maybe Ill rent it.

I decided to go ahead and pick this up today. It's been coming the time to start trading in a few of my older games that I'll never touch again in my life, and luckily Gamestop had a trade-in deal going on (that's the only time I think it's worth it). I traded in Crackdown and the first GRAW and got about $20 for both combined, which I was pretty happy with, and picked up "The Show". Great little game, although I hate the menus. Plus, why do they stick every single fucking option that's in the game in one single screen?

I've ran into a huge bug, though. Upon immediately popping in the game, setting the options, and choosing the Quick Play option, it dumps me back to the XMB every single time. It took 3 times before I realized this was a complete showstopper of a bug, and was happy when the Exhibition mode let me into the game. HUGE oversight, I'm not sure what's going on.

My first game was as the Reds, my "local" team, and I played against the Mariners, statistically ranked as a comparable team. Holy shit do I suck at batting, I'll really have to practice. Through 9 innings, it was a scoreless affair, with my starting pitcher, Harang, going all 9. Although I had managed to help Adam Dunn strike out his first 4 at-bats, I was finally able to lead of the bottom of the 12th with a nice double to left and get him on the board. A couple of outs later and I was able to get him to 3rd. Number 7th in the batting order (I don't even remember who it was, I was just ready to end the damn game already), I was able to correctly guess a pitch (finally), and lined it directly over second base to bring in the winning run. I think the game lasted me about an hour and 20 minutes.

Overall, I still impressed with the graphics and animations of the retail build. Everything is really fucking smooth, and only a couple of times did I notice anything out of the ordinary. The animations are varied enough to where they don't get old, and the announcers are really fantastic. They have a multitude of things to say for each situation, even once making a comment specific to the Reds stadium. For those who don't know, Great American Ballpark sits right beside the Ohio River, and during one of my futile Adam Dunn at-bats, I tried for a power swing, but missed horribly. One of the announcers commented that it looked like he was aiming for the Ohio River. Nice touch.

Overall, great game so far. If I can get the hang of the batting, I think I'll be alright.

im in the same boat. ive played the demo numerous times and have already logged a few hours on the retail game but for some reason i cant put up more than 3 runs in a game. my batting is just flat out atrocious. yesterday i played the padres vs. pirates and i finally broke through in the 8th inning. i wanted to put trevor in there for the 9th and see if i get treated to a 'hells bells' video, but i forgot to get him up in the 'pen and just had jake peavy pitch a complete game (3 hits, 10 k's, 1r [it was unearned as it came in on a khalil green error]). i won 2-1.

my approach to hitting though is when i try and guess the pitch, i always pick fastball. if im right ill know it and if im wrong im guessing its going to be something slow or with a lot of movement on it. kind of narrows it down a bit better. whats holding me back is getting fooled a lot by location. ill swing at some terrible pitches not even close to the zone. i try and focus on the delivery and arm slot angle but by the time i realize if its close or not im already too late and either pop it up or tap out a weak grounder. ill try some more and work on it, then move on to online play.

Sounds a little frustrating. 🙁 I wonder what else slipped by Q&A?

Yes, it was. A guy over at Operation Sports said he had the same problem, and clearing his PS3 MLB08 cache solved the problem. Apparently, though, with all the things they've done right with this game, there are a lot of annoying little bugs everywhere in the game.

I'm interested in the game dispite the issues some of you are bringing up. It would be nice if there was a patch being worked on to address some of these issues.

Heh, I've started doing the exact same thing. I guess fastball every time. My batting has gotten a tad better, but I still suck horribly. I swing at all kinds of crap, my brain just isn't wired to hold off. And when I actually do think a pitch is off and I don't swing, it's always well within the strike zone. I don't know what my problem is. I think the most I've gotten is 2 balls with any hitter. I think I may have more strike-outs than hits 🙁.

I started my franchise with the Braves last night, and managed to win my first game against the Nationals 7-1. I felt like I was getting the hang of batting, since most of my runs came in the latter half of the game. But I played my second game this afternoon against the wimpy Pirates, and lost 3-1 (a couple of unfortunate plays kept me from putting more runs on the board). I have a couple of guys on my team that it seems like I can get a hit anytime I want, but others (I'm looking at you Teixeira) I can't do anything with to save my life.

^ i actually drew a walk yesterday! i played colorado and after i worked the count 3-1 i fouled off a couple pitches that would've been ball 4 because i figured no way the computer walks me. then i finally held up and he tried to fool me again and i drew a walk. i was so happy i had that kind of plate discipline you would've sworn i just hit a game winning grand slam or something.

so i had a 4-1 lead going into the ninth and brought trevor in, cool to hear the stadium bells but sucks no ac/dc. anyways first pitch i throw is his patented change-up and holliday goes yard on me for the second time that game. i was like 'damn! im going to get a replay of the nl west playoff game last year!' but luckily he sat the next 3 guys down and held on. i want to try batting with a team though with more offense. i am realist and know my lowly padres just lack that big, consistent bat so im curious to see if my batting is really that bad or if its just that i dont have anyone who can swing the lumber hard enough to make something happen.

Has anybody tried MLB 2k8? How does that copare?

I have mlb2k8 for 360, haven't tried the show. The game is ok, but I have numerous gripes, most of which focus on their abysmal quality control. For instance, the manual describes different types of swings (contact, power...) when the game only has one type of swing. The new precision pitching it kinda cool, but it almost seems like the game only cares how well you execute the pitching motion, now the placement of the pitch or the style of the hitting. I've thrown down and away breaking balls to LH hitters and had them turn on the pitch for a pull homerun down the right side.

Also, listening to Joe Morgan and Joe Miller is pretty torturous, but the game makes it worse by randomly selecting any soundbite that may or may not apply to the situation, or sometimes saying things completely wrong. A few examples are:

My pitcher got hit with a line drive and had to come out for an injury in the 2nd inning. The announcers say something to effect of "I don't understand this move by the manager, someone obviously didn't put together a good game plan."

I hit a homerun and they later reference it as an inside the park homerun for no reason, saying, "and earlier he legged out an inside the park homerun- I didn't think he was gonna make it, but he just kept running."

Another gripe is how they treat your batters. Hitting is ridiculously easy with good hitters and ridiculously hard with bad hitters. I'm about 10 games into my season with boston, and Manny and Ortiz are both batting .700+, while Lugo and Ellsbury are both hitting about 0.040. I can take an off-balance swing on an outside pitch with Ortiz and he'll crush a double off the wall, while with Lugo I'll turn perfectly on a fat pitch and pop out to left field. There is way way too much variation in-game based on their player ratings.

The franchise mode is well done though and the new card system is kinda cool. The game plays ok, but it really does feel lacking- like they quit 70% of the way through development and then just tied up any loose ends to package the game and didn't do any quality control.

I downloaded the demo and gave it a whirl. There are some quirks and you can't really hit ground balls and fielding is difficult, but if you're not going to buy a PS3 to play The Show, this is your best bet. Come to think of it, I don't think MLB 2k8 is really good at all. 🙂 To each his own, though, right?

For those of you playing The Show, how's the atmosphere so far? Has anybody one a game with a ninth inning rally or a walk off homerun and had it feel like a real ball game, announcers included? I'm really intrigued by the actual, "the show" gameplay mode and if I get a PS3 for it's blu-ray capabilities, I'd really be intrigued in getting this game.

with the demo i hit a walk off that hooked inside pesky pole with drew (i know, i was shocked also 😛 ). as soon as i hit it the game went to a cut screen and showed him just dropping his bat knowing that he just jacked it out and then he starts hopping down the first base line and was so excited he forgot to tag first and the base coach calls him back to remind him to tag. he then continues through the bases and everyone is waiting at home to do the hop. was pretty damn cool.

The atmosphere in the game is fantastic, if not a little bit flawed still. The crowd boos and cheers when it's supposed to, but it's like there's too much crowd at the games. In the 3 games I've played so far (I'm a slow go-er), it's been like sellout crowds. Maybe once I work my way away from the start of the season (and start building my losing record 😉), maybe I'll see more bleachers and less crowd noise.

But other than that pathetic gripe, the atmosphere is pretty good. In my last game I described in a post above, I went into the bottom of the ninth down 3-1, and led off with a single. The crowd seemed to love it, and the announcers appropriately remarked on how important a hit that was to start out. Then stupid Teixeira grounded into a double-play (I usually strike out with him, figures the one time I lay wood on the ball he gets me two outs instead of his usual one), and the crowd seemed somewhat deflated. They booed when the game was final. 🙂

Awesome! I always hated games where a ninth inning comeback occurs and once the winning run crosses the plate, or when you win a playoff series, or even worse, the world series, and the announcers just sign off like it's a spring training game and the teams don't react any differently after such a huge event like they should.

I always enjoyed baseball games and this game is making me more interested in picking up a PS3. Any hints on how I'd hook one up to a Dell 20" widescreen? Is there optical audio out from the PS3? My PC is already on the DVI port and the 360 on the VGA port. Hmm, I think that's it. Maybe I'll just wait until I get a real LCD tv. 🙁
