Well, I want(ed) to try out different classes, different paths, different squadmates, and see how it all played out.

Yeah, right now I'm using Tali'Zorah nar Rayya and Urdnot Wrex. While people complain about the elevator rides, I like their banter during them.

Wrex with a shotgun = tank. 🙂

 I used the same crew as Modeps for 80-90% of my first playthrough. Wrex is badass.

My first time through I stuck with the humans, Kaiden and Ashley. My xenophobic, renegade Shepard didn't trust those damn aliens. 😛

I think he's using an AR right now primarily... Do I have to train him in Shotgun first?

I love the shotgun. If you're not using it a lot, have someone in your squad using it. I remember having Tali using it (just so she wasn't using the pistol all the time) but I can't remember if she's able to out of the gate or if it was on my second playthrough, after I'd unlocked Shotguns.

In any case, the shotgun special ability, which I believe is "Carnage," just rocks, especially for those enemies that like to rush you.

Alright, I've got quite a few hours into ME now and I've gotta say, its a great RPG. I haven't been this into an RPG since FF7... even Oblivion didn't grab me like this one did.

BUT... all is not sunshine and puppy dogs. I understand when creating an entire universe to traverse, you're going to have to cut some corners... but making every single planet you land on the exact same with different lighting, weather effects, and possible extreme conditions, is just a little TOO lazy. At least the story of WHY you're on the planet is well thought out.

Tons of RPGs have world maps to walk around, but at least you do things on them... this, you just roam around, every once in a while coming upon some minerals or some sand creature, and hit 3 points of interest, then leave. Even mines that I've been in were exactly the same in layout. There were made by different people on different planets, why are they exactly the same? The Mako isn't terrible to control, but its basically just a way to extend the length of the game.

Secondly, the inventory is such garbage. I know how it works, but it still is a pain in the butt to use.

Thirdly, I'm not a fan of how the squad controls work in general, but more specifically I think they could have done a little bit better of a job with the way characters use their abilities. Perhaps its because I'm a soldier, but I rarely go into that menu at all during the fights. I'm not even sure if the AI of the squad is smart enough to use their abilities without me telling them to. This isn't a turn based thing, its real time action... if I'm not specifically commanding them to do stuff, I would hope they'd know they can turn on Carnage without me telling them to.

Lastly, they need to hire a different composer for the music. There's very little of mention, and most of it is dull and uninspired.

Other than that, everything else has been wonderful. The conversation system is perfection and is probably, combined with the story, my favorite part of the game. The graphics are great even with the texture pop-in, and I'm already thinking on how I'll setup my second play through.

In the menu there is a setting that controls this part of the AI. You can set it so that they won't "cast" anything on their own, only use defensive abilities (barrier, shield recharge, etc.), or use their full arsenal of both offensive and defensive abilities.

I always prefer to queue up my team's commands on my own, so I left that to totally off.

Yep, if you control your squades commands, it makes for more interesting combat IMO. I also think it makes the game much easier to beat when playing on the harder difficulty settings.

I played this game for the first time last night - amazing! Can't wait to borrow it again from a friend and run all the way through.

Oh, I've finished exactly ONE main storyline mission when you get past the Citadel. I've been working my way though all the sidequests I got. Just finished all that I could in my list... and now, we're onto the real meat.

There are 4 shots of it, but here's #1.

Yes, his upper torso is on the right of the screen, and his legs are on the left.

:Q Clearly the Benezia in your Mass Effect universe is far too powerful.

I wish this one wasnt blurry. His torso actually went under the railing in that one.

So, I got the "Completionist" achievement. Does that mean I rock? I have a friend that is on his 3rd playthrough and does not have the achievement. Maybe it just means I'm being quite anal about doing all these sidequests.

Yes you rock, and it's because you did the sidequests. I did all of those also and got the achievement, except for the collecting of items from the planets. Some of the planets were way too boring.

I just started my second playthrough yesterday trying to get my character to lvl 60. I plan on going through it much faster this time around. I finished everything in the Citadel in probably 1/4 the time it took me my first play through. I spent most of the first few days of playing Mass Effect in the Citadel.

SOME of them? I think ALL of them... I really dont like that aspect of the game. They're all the same 🙁

I read somewhere the achievement is merely based on the number of missions/sidequests you do.

I got it on my first playthrough as well, and I only did 1 or 2 of the useless planet sidequests. I think the easiest way to get this is to just do the majority of the Citadel missions at the very beginning of the game - maybe your friend rushed through the Citadel to get to the meat of the game? There's just so many to do there.

I also think that the Citadel missions are the easiest way to get the ally achievements.

I don't have those yet, and I've been playing with the same two people in my party, as soon as I got them. Hopefully soon.

Good luck with level 60. It requires ~800,000,000 XP (I could be off by a factor of 10 or so).

To give a rough estimate - I am at level 58/59 (I forget), and I only have 650,000,000 XP, and I've beat the game 3 times. I started one last time through on insanity difficulty and just got to the end of the Citadel before I gave up. Didn't want to ruin the game, I'll go back when the DLC comes out.

Who are you using? I used Wrex/Tali my first time through and didn't get the achievements till near the very end.

I"m using Kaiden/Ashley this time so I should get the achievement earlier.

For the ally achievements they have to be with you for 45 Assignments and 15 Missions. I'm not sure what the requirements are for Completionist.

Do you get more XP on the hardcore/insanity? I didn't realize you need THAT much XP to hit 60. I just wanted to play the game through one more time and be done with it. Guess I may not hit 60 after all 😛

I don't think so - the XP stays the same.

I would guess it would take at least 3 playthroughs to get to 60 - especially since your first time through your level caps at 50. Maybe if you max at 50 the first time and then get everything possible the 2nd you can hit 60 in 2.

It's looking like I will get it when I finish my 4th time. Though I don't mind, as I should get the ally, level 60, insanity, and whatever the 50 point DLC achievement is all at once.

In reference to additional playthroughs, can you choose a different discipline? In other words, right now I'm a soldier... the next time I go through, can I pick an engineer? I'd like to pick up some of the other achievements for biotics stuff as well.

Yes and no.

Yes you can start the game over as a different character - duh. But if you mean can you do that and keep all your stats/XP - then no, you need to keep the character exactly as it was.

Edit: And FYI, if you want to play on hardcore/insanity difficulty, do NOT start from a level 1 character.

Well that is disappointing... I guess I'll have to go through on Normal again as a dude that does electronics/biotics just to get them.
