is it a good idea to close programs to save memory/battery life?

is there an app that closes all background programs or something?

Thats called a task killer app. There's quite a few in Market, though generally they degrade performance, battery, and other issues. Most devs recommend you don't use them.

if you'd like, there's an option in dev settings to limit the number of background processes, or to quit an app as soon as you leave the activity.

There's also the ability to kill apps by swiping them out of the quick launch menu (though, cannot speak to it's actual ability to kill full background processes), and then there's also the ability to enable "Long-press Back to Force Kill" - however, I also don't remember if this is a custom ROM feature or a feature baked into ICS.

Yeah I was stock for one day I think (I bought it from Verizon about a week after - I was still mulling it over), and I've basically always had a custom ROM save for the few months I had the Bionic (never ROM'd it since I couldn't change the kernel. just never felt like bothering with it, and why go half-ass anyway :p, and I figured I'd get the SGN if it did drop on Verizon).

CM9 ?!
I rarely check, since progress seems extraordinarily slow. You'd think they'd at least push to get a stable release on a few select phones while they continued working on the other billion phones they want to support.. if they did, I guess they never considered the latest Nexus to be worthy of such treatment. :(

Not sure if I want beta. I'm still on an older release of Codename Android, it's been very stable and I'm waiting for their 4.0.4 release.. that, or a stable CM9 if it looks to be even better.

hey, does the launcher redraw a lot?

I'm asking this because I run CM9 on my Nexus S and I get a lot of redraws. Also on my TouchPad. I use Go Launcher and it's all the same. On 2.3 and older ROMs, there was a supercharger script thats been floating around XDA to fix the launcher redraws, but it doesnt really work for CM9/ICS.

I hate to post a question which might have such an obvious answer, but nothing has turned up for me on Google.

I love my Galaxy Nexus but I am receiving complaints from people (and some aren't picking up the phone) because my number shows up as "private" or "unknown". I can't find a software setting to change this, and I am using the same SIM card that I have been using for years on other phones and my number has always shown up. Is there a setting in ICS to control whether or not your number is displayed to the people you call?

Caller id block you set with the carrier. Go to my Verizon and shut it off

anyone else with the EEE pad transformer (the orig) install ICS yet?

i did it this morning, and there seemingly is no way to force restart the tablet anymore :/

seems to be running fine, however talkback was on when it restarted after the install which was annoying but easy to turn off

Edit: You were right, thank you. I had to call O2 and get them to change some setting on their end. Though it still confuses me why (with the same sim card) my number was automatically displayed with my iPhone, but had to be manually released by the carrier for my Nexus. Thanks.

rootzwiki seems to have gained a lot of traction amongst US users. The international folk are still at XDA. Maybe they have a pile of stuff for the Nexus, but looking at my SGS2, you can find on the first page there are threads going back to December. Clearly not very frequently used....

I think similarly you can look at US phones on XDA and some of the boards are more dead than on Rootzwiki. I think this is because a lot of the guys on the Droid 2 and Droid X worked on Rootzwiki and got a lot of US based users to go there. The other phones, especially HTC ones have firm roots in XDA.

Mine does a lot on my Nexus, but it's usually only after using Chrome and having like 5+ tabs open. I think it's just Android clearing launcher from memory to make room, though I can't imagine why they would allow Android to do that for the launcher. I personally don't care but I could see a normal non-tech geek person being confused by it.

Lot's of competition among smartphones manufacturers, don't you think that updates are bit too quick... i didn't even properly enjoyed my android Adreno 205 1 gig snapdragon processor and dual core with andreno 220 is about to hit. Not even a one year and my phone is outdated, this is not fare, what should i do? should i purchase new one to follow the stay upgraded...? any suggestion..

Mobile VoIP

It's not necessarily outdated just because the hardware is old. As long as it can still run the software that's available (more importantly, the software that you need to use), doesn't really matter.

In some ways, the Galaxy Nexus started out behind the hardware curve. I know that it'll be "outdated" in 6 months, but that will have no impact on the utility of the phone or my enjoyment of it.

Indeed. Android has settled much in terms of hardware requirements, and the Galaxy Nexus will, in time, be so highly supported that it will serve as a very apt phone to keep me happy during an entire contract without jealousy of other performers.

I do plan on picking up a tablet whenever a Cortex A15 (plus great GPU) SoC lands in a great form factor. I'm hoping I'll be able to dual-boot Android and Win8 (because Android on a tablet would be a great utility at times, but I'd also love to have a full Win8 tablet. It'll be awesome if the Galaxy Nexus can be dual-booted like that, Zune on this beast would be awesome.

It looks good, hella expensive though. At rootzwiki, some people found it for as low as $40.

Link????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I want this. I usually left my iPad playing podcasts or Netflix while going to sleep. This would replace that completely.
