My 2 year T-Mobile contract finally expired last week. And after months of back and forth debating with myself. I decided to get an unlocked Galaxy Nexus from Amazon for $660 and pair it up with T-Mobile's prepaid Monthly4G $30 100 minute/unlimited (5GB) data plan.
Went with the Nexus because I kinda felt I got abandoned by T-Mobile with my Vibrant phone. While other Galaxy S phones eventually got Gingerbread (some 8 to 10 months later), the Vibrant never got it. This kinda annoyed me. It frustrated me that I got into a 2 year contract and my phone basically gets supported for about a year, then EOL'ed. I got a little screwed in my opinion.
With this Nexus I know I'll get quick updates directly from Google and chances are very good I'll even see Android 5 on this phone at some point. I wouldn't feel confident any other phone I bought today would ever get Android 5 (they are still waiting for Android 4).
Going prepaid probably worries me more than anything. Been with T-Mobile for 10 years I believe. Was with Sprint for a few years before than. AT&T before that, always been on contracts. First time doing prepaid. I expect I won't get the same amazing customer service from T-Mobile as a prepaid user as I did as a contract user. I can live with that I hope. Just hope the data doesn't suck. Been pretty happy with T-Mobile's 3G, hopefully that same quality carries over to the prepaid HSPA+ data as well.
