I think the cruelest joke the carriers have played on us is to introduce data caps and LTE 🙁

After the ThunderBolt, I decided the speeds were awesome, but the battery life issues weren't worth it, and dropped back to a 3G phone.

Awesome speeds/phone, BTW. Color me jealous guys 🙂

don't worry they'll open it back up once LTE-Advanced hits. But that won't be for a while, gotta get everybody upgraded to LTE then they can sell you LTE-Advanced phones.

He might be referring to the volume+ app, and no, it does not distort the sound so long as you increase it conservatively. I have it on setting 7 and it is much louder and sounds crystal clear.

my bad I read it as there was some prior issue he was having, yea it all depends how how high you go, apparently if you go over 8 it just resets back to 0 aka has no effect. While its louder its still not as loud as the Dx.

Also the Dx feels like some of the sound is coming though the LCD the nexus is really directional to point outward.

Meh, something ill have to get used to

Bah. I think I might be in that group of people experiencing data connection problems. 🙁 I barely get any cellular data, 3G or 4G. And they cut out frequently. Took a walk down to the mail boxes down the street, where my TBolt gets full 3G and 4G, Nexus gets no 4G and only enough 3G to register. :/ Did a speed test and pulled 160Kbps. Its like Sprint. 😛

Still no luck getting that 4.0.2 update to pull either. And I'm not willing to flash the factory images yet.

Edit - Voice seems stable though. Didn't drop calls on the test calls I made.

Possibly. Odd that that would be the only thing 'bad' though? Need to do more trouble shooting.
there's an option in advanced wifi settings to choose which band (5ghz or 2.4ghz) the radio uses. perhaps try toggling that? it should be defaulted to Auto

what type of encryption are you using for WPA2 (tkip/aes)? try switching it to the other in your router settings.

I normally use WPA2 Personal with AES. No MAC filtering is enabled. First thing I did when trouble shooting this was to turn off all the security. Nexus can't connect unless its set for B-Only, G-Only, or BG-Mixed. Set it for N-Only, and it don't even attempt to get an IP address.

If that 4.0.2 update doesn't push out by the time I leave work Monday, I'm stopping by the VZW store on my way home.

Check in "settings - about phone -system updates" see if you can pull down the update manually

Thats where it says the update is there, included enhancements, etc, but above that it says Download Failed. There's a Retry Download button, but it doesn't seem to have any affect.

Instructions?

Step 1
Unlock bootloader
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/12/05/how-to-unlock-the-galaxy-nexus-bootloader/

this post will help you if you get stuck on the "fastboot oem unlock" part

if you're stuck at the part where it says waiting for device, you've already downloaded the drivers, and it's saying 'android 1.0' on device manager, try this

Go to device manager, right click on android 1.0, click 'properties'
click 'update driver'
click 'browse my computer for driver software'
click 'let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
click 'show all devices' then 'next'
click 'have disk'
click 'browse'
go to the folder you saved the new usb driver in (/extras/google/usb_driver) - you dont need to go into the subfolder
it should offer 3 options - choose the top one

When the phone reboots it will take 3-5 min to do the reset. DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY, just wait

step 2 root

What kind of battery life is everyone seeing? I have mine set to 3g only since I don't have 4g service. I have noticed the battery life has gotten a little better after a few charges.

Here's where I'm at so far for today:

BTW this is with 1 hr 18m time on for screen.

Anubis was right regarding the 3G/4G radio switching. Once I went into CDMA only, battery life improved quite a bit. Though I used the phone lightly yesterday. I was at 10hrs on battery with 38% left. 4 of those hours were spent on wifi.

I can't believe the reception here at work is that bad though, I'm not far away from the other wall and I have no floors above me were I work. However I do work at an airport and close by there is an ASR-9 radar. It operates in the 2.7-2.9 GHz range but it is tilted a couple degrees above the horizon. Probably not the cause, but just trying to figure out the discrepancy.

Those of you who have volume+ does it work to increase bluetooth volume level as well? I paired my phone to my FM streamer for the first time yesterday and with the bluetooth volume at 100% I still had to crank the car volume past 75% to get some decent sound from it and hissing can be noticeable. normally I don't need to go above 20%.

I did a factory reset last night, which, by the way, wipes everything on the /sdcard partition too, and my Nexus was able to get the 4.0.2 update smoothly. Signal strength is still crud though.

Just an FYI on the factory reset guys, make a backup of stuff you want to keep first.

i finally checked this phone out at the store today. it is very smooth. very slick phone.

i even considered impulse buying it and selling my rezound, but the big problem with it is it is so tall.

i generally use myphone with 1 hand and i can't reach the notificationm bar without having to adjust the phone with my hand. its somewhat uncomfortable and annoying to do that and i actually have pretty big hands. i can palm a basketball....

i wish they'd make one the size of the nexus S or something with all the same features and an SD slot and a camera on the level of the rezounds camera for image quality. the instant focus thing with the camera was pretty cool though, you can literally take 5 shots in like 3 seconds. i wish the headphone jack was on top and the back didnt feel so cheap. that battery cover is really thin and flimsy.

but it did feel extra slick jus twith ice cream sandwich. the browser seemed so fast, i can't wait to see what other phones are like once they get ICS ... though too bad thats a 3+ month wait

Read the review on Phone Scoop.
Very high praise for everything except the battery. Which by itself may be a deal breaker for me. One thing I learned with my Droid: Doesnt matter how nice the gadget is, if you cant actually use it then its basically a five hundred dollar brick.

Oh, theres a nice new Verizon store in my neighborhood just down the road. Will go see it today at noon when they open.

I agree it sucks the battery doesn't last so long, but on the other hand you won't get a LTE/high end android that doesnt have similar battery life. It actually gets better after some recharge cycles, still getting better for me.
I think once I get my 2 extended batteries/external charger I'll be set for my commute.

I've been using ADW EX instead of the stock ICS launcher. Lets you use gestures on the home screen (swipe down for notifications, etc.) Though, I didn't seem to have any problems reaching the notifications with the stock launcher.

I've used mine rather rigorously for the past 2 days, and am simply delighted by it (not the LTE version, bought the 16gb version from amazon.co.uk).

It's fast, the screen is gorgeous, phone call quality has been good, and even under reasonably heavy use (youtube playlists running while I'm in the shower over wifi, lots of gaming, email checking, maps and browsing) I managed not to run out of battery after being out and about for a whole day. I'm fine with charging the battery overnight while I sleep, and haven't used a phone yet that could do all of what I mentioned above without being charged overnight for the following day.

Edit: Regarding versions, mine is 4.0.1 and under 'about phone' etc under system updates it shows this as the most recent version, not 4.0.2.

For now I'm trying to figure out how to get the most of the phone (it's my first Android phone) but I'll browse the forums before derailing with app related questions 😛
