Get a screen protector... mine has a scratch in it already after 10 days

The scratch is on the bottom of the glass and isn't on the actual display, but it's annoying nonetheless. I think all the gorilla/fortified glass claims are hype - just because keys or a knife won't scratch it doesn't mean it won't get scratches.
I'm still thinking about exchanging it because of the heat issue - hopefully verizon won't notice the scratches.
I'm also finding it impossible to adjust the volume of this at the gym when I lay it on its side. Pushing the volume button pushes the phone against the power button, turning the screen off.
There are a lot of variables with fortified glass. I have a feeling glass thickness varies (and has an impact on scratch resistance), or otherwise there is some variable that changes things, or it's simply luck.
My Droid (OG) survived the entire time I owned it (launch day through mid September 2011) and I think the most it had was a minor scratch that was basically impossible to notice, and a minor pit/abrasion about the size of a grain of sand. My Bionic picked up a few scratches after dropping it for the first time 3 days after owning. Both phones had been dropped in similar ways, the OG was dropped numerous times and I kept it naked the entire time. The body was beat up like no other, but the glass was amazing. For some reason, the Bionic's gorilla glass was far weaker than the OG's.
The SGN seems to have pretty good glass, but I've managed to not drop it yet (plus I got a TPU case on it at the moment, no screen protector yet). Still, I think the wrong grain of sand, dust, or whatever, managed to find itself on the phone, because there's a very faint, hard to see hairline scratch over the display. I can't see it unless I have the display off and I'm looking for it, so that's nice.
Waiting for the SGP Hybrid case (one that is compatible with Verizon extended battery), and still trying to decide which is the best SP to use.
Any ideas? My desires for the perfect SP: no orange peel, no degradation of image quality in any way, it basically changes nothing but adds a layer of protection. No change to contrast or color quality, no change to viewing angles, etc. Such a protector exist?
