Holy **** that is wicked! I never seen that perspective before, the thing is reaching me in NY already. Hope it’s not pulling in rain for the weekend...
And you can see the wind at 100 meters above ground, 250 meters above ground, ect. Also a live wave height option as well. When Irma, Matthew hit FL it was actually fairly accurate comparing to NOAA date released after the storms has passed through.

Hope not!!!

Just talking to friends who tell me it was a basic storm. They only worry about flooding. It's raining on and off. Hope nobody lives near a river.
A "basic storm" does not drive 11ft of surge and does not drop "10-20 of rain. It might seem like it's "adventurous" to go through a hurricane until you've actually GONE through one. Days, (if not weeks), without power, people squabbling over shi* like ice and gasoline, eating Chef Boy-ar-Dee for 4 days straight, massive amounts of cleanup to perform with out even a hot shower or decent food or any air conditioning to enjoy afterwards.

This is conspiracy theory stuff but I wonder if the reason CNN is at this moment covering the storm with a live reporter in NC or SC is just in case things get bad enough that evacuations and aid is fumbled by the fed government. In hopes of a story to make the White House administration look bad if efforts go awry to help flood victims.

CNN can't just wait until the feds mess up to report on it because that will make CNN look like they're just jumping on the bandwagon late in criticism of the government. So they're keeping up the live at the scene coverage to show they're concerned for the people. No I don't actually believe all that at this point. I'm just writing some things that crossed my mind in a hopefully calm and respectful manner.

Storm surge is over-hyped by the media. It mostly affects people along the shoreline who already know that building or buying that close is risky. People inland worry about wind or heavy rain more, which is what I'm hearing. So far so good for the inlanders, they have 40mph winds and no widespread flooding.....yet.

PS: You couldn't pay me to live on the shoreline....your luck will just run out eventually.

...

Stuff can be replaced.
Not nearly always, as that museum fire in Brazil recently showed.

There’s a lot of stuff in my personal collection I could not replace if looters or a hurricane took it from me. That said, I’d move it some place safe with as much warning as these people had.

Yea, specially on some of those barrier islands, they did a shot from a helicopter about 500ft above and damm, these people are living on little more than a sandbar!. Because flood insurance is backed by the government homes in this obviously extremely risky location will continue to be built and rebuilt every time the Atlantic ocean claims this spot as her own. The danger with storm surge is that water is being driven by the wind which makes it considerably more powerful. News has said 8 dead so far.

While I wholeheartedly support the federal flood insurance program, shit like that has got to end.

Give me wind damage over flooding any day.

Eh, when the the wind rips your roof up and 6-8 inches of hard rain falls the damage is very similar.

The main difference is with flooding you demo everything up to 6-12 inches above the the flood line.

With windstorm roof damage you remove everything from the ceiling down around the area the roof failed.

The only real benefit to windstorm vs flood is rain is a bit cleaner than floodwater so it takes longer for the mold to start.

It depends on the cost. If people are only paying $2k/year in peak hurricane zones, then that’s a bad plan. But some areas seem to be closer to reality. I think our Key West poster mentioned annual flood insurance cost was about 10% of the payout and decided to self-insure. This article seems to confirm it:

https://www.flkeysnews.com/news/article79621892.html
Payouts on most federal flood policies are capped at $250,000, even for some pricey waterfront properties in the Keys tagged with an annual flood-insurance premium above $42,000, Kidwell said.

Ok one more conspiracy theory idea. Fox News is doing more live on the scene reporting of the Florence storm this morning in order to avoid having to spend time covering the Manafort story. Meanwhile CNN is reporting more on the Manafort story this morning and trying not to look insensitive to the storm victims with the time they spend covering Manafort.
