naw just the passiv cooler on nb, cpu got scythe infinity and got a fan infront and one in the back. 0.1 on the fsb and 2.2 v on the ram. And i bought em from a danish hardware dealer, best ram ived ever had(they can reach 1200mhz, but not on this board).

I just put together my DS3 system today. It booted up first try with Windows XP preloaded on my hard drive, although it was a bit frustrating loading all the proper drivers and fighting the Found New Hardware Wizard for control of my computer.

The only glitch is the on-board Lan. I get no signal out of the port, it just says cable disconnected in Network Connections. The Marvel driver says it is enabled and working fine, and the cable works fine in my other computer. Without internet, my new computer is basically a lump of coal, but looks prettier (must be the blue led's

I believe I have the Lan ports enabled in the bios, so could I have a dead lan port, or am I missing something? Anybody else come across this?? Any input would be appreciated.

Excuse me if this has been covered already, but I have read through the thread and haven't seen it anywhere. Where do you look to see what revision you have? I can't tell on mine and must not be looking in the right place.

On the extreme top left hand corner, in very small type, it reads Rev 2.0, (also on the box label). Mine obviously is a new board as it came with the F10 bios dated Jan. 11/07, I believe. I think Annandtech did a review of the Rev 2.0 and were surprised at how few improvements were made, but I can no longer find that review, it seems to have vanished? (unless I am confusing it with another m/b?)...

Now if I could only get the Lan working on my new DS3 board...?

Where do you find the drivers for these DS3 boards anyway? I'm so used to having an NVidia or Via chipset that I don't have the first clue about driver packages for intel boards.

You should really be doing a clean install of Windows when you replace something as integral as your chipset.

Thanks vailar, I will try to install these newer drivers. I would normally re-install Windows, but my brother moved to Africa for a year and took the XP disc with him!

Clean out old "phantom" devices.
Procedure:
Start/Run/CMD
[Opens a command-prompt window.]
Type:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc
[Opens Device Manager]
View: Show hidden devices
Expand each device listing by clicking on the + sign.
Any devices "grayed out": Right-click "uninstall".

Mines Rev 1.0, anyone know the differences, if any, other than the bios that comes pre installed?

Theres probably nothing wrong with your cpu-fan socket, what you described is typical DS3 behaviour when booting up. I noticed that and worried about it too when I got my board, but found all DS3's do that. The CPU is too cool for the fan to kick in when booting. The defaut setting in BIOS for the CPU fan is on auto which probably is responsible for that (I put it on Legacy becasue I found it somewhat erratic and maybe unreliable).

Thanks for the tip vailr. I had literally hundreds of greyed-out devices, sometimes 15 or more of the same device. It took awhile but I removed them all. Now my computer runs like the champ it should be!

correct me if this is not the place to talk about the "S3".
I have the S3 F8 w/ bios
I play BF2 and the voip in BF2 will not work with the realtek onboard audio on the P965-S3.

I have searched and searched to no avail and am simply wondering if anyone has found a solution.

BF2 can only use the default audio input device. It's notoriously finicky, but particularly with onboard audio.
My mic works fine in windows/BF 2142, but not in BF2.
I have tried:
the 0% threshold trick
updated drivers of all kinds
stock settings for CPU/RAM/video/everything

Any ideas/tricks, I'll try them, thanks. And please refrain from telling me to spend money on a new sound card.

it's what i have to do to get stable - are you cooling the NB? what kind of cooling do you have? you have much better ram than me too. where'd you get your ram?

Silly question maybe but have you re-evaluated your overclock since moving to F10.

With the earlier BIOSs I had to use 1.45V+ to get above 3GHz, now running F10 (and since F5ish) have been able to run 3.1GHz at 1.375V.

So, I've RMAed the DS3 I got because there was a bent pin in the CPU socket. But I'm wondering--at a few points, the PC would boot at 3GHz one time, then the next restart it wouldn't even post. And then when I WAS able to overclock it and get in to Windows, I was getting lower PCMark05 scores at 3GHz than I was at stock speeds. Is it possible all this was caused by the pin being bent? It's almost like when the CPU would overclock, the system would purposely slow it down during intense applications.

I'm also confused about the voltage settings on this mobo. It doesn't tell what you current voltage IS anywhere that I can find, just how much you've upped it. It would be really helpful to know that even though the board is saying 1.28V is "normal", the CPU is only running between 1.12V and 1.22V once booted--so I don't bump it to 1.35V when it's already not even reaching 1.28V at stock speeds.

I guess we'll find out if the board was broken or if I'm even more of an idiot than I think I am.

Anyone know if a 50 mm fan will fit on the Northbridge HS when using the stock intel HSF? I hear some people are adding 40mm fans to help with cooling was wondering if a 50 mm fan would work as well.

I have a 50 mm fan strapped on my NB right now with a bigger HSF (Zalman 9500). No problem here.

Are you using Rev 1 or 2 of t his board? On my Rev 2 with a Freezer 7 Pro, there is virtually no space for anything on top of the NB heatsink...

I'l lprobably have the same problem if I go with the Tuniq, but check out this SLI NB cooler from thermaltake - you might be able to slip the heatsink under your CPU HSF

It should work. I have the CL4 version and it works like advertised. One thing though, I don't think this memory use the D9 chip. So overclocking is going to be limited, especially if you want to overclock with tight timing (i.e. CL4).
