I'm pretty sure most C2D processor chip will not hit 600FSB.
So getting more than DDR2 1200 is kinda pointless (I'm talking about using 1:1 memory divider)

So, get a DDR2 800 or DDR2 1066, that should be enough.
I have DDR2 667 (PC2 5200 or 266MHz) and DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500 533Mhz)

THe DDR2 667 can run up to 450MHz, or DDR2 900.
The DDR2 1066 can run up to 600MHz, or DDR2 1200.

With DDR2 1200 and 1:1, your proc is running at 600FSB.
It's gonna be your motherboard which gonna hold you back, not the memory =)
 
Read through much of this forum, and the Asus 650i and decided to try the Giga 965-DS3 board as part of a whole new system- looking for a stable easy but not extreme overclock of ~3Ghz of a C2D 6400 (w/ 2GB of DDR2800 4-4-4-12 Corsair? Crucial? Geil? Patriot?)

I'm ready to buy but could wait a couple weeks as I don't understand what the rev 3.3 board "native FSB 1333 support" means in terms of performance and overclocking options both for this cpu and a possible future cpu upgrade at the end of this year.

Any thoughts?

There's always possbilities for things to mess up. One possible way to resolve this:
1. put your HD back to the intel ports
2. turn the mode of your gigabyte ports to AHCI.
When you restart, I think your computer will prompt you to install driver for a your JMicron device.
3. Install the driver for it (note you need the OTHER driver -> i.e. not IDE)
4. Now repeat the above procedure.

The problem is that you need the other set of drivers (not the standard IDE) for your drives to operate in SATA mode. You can try this... the worst thing that can happen is you see more blue screens. LOL

Of course the "correct" way to install is just to insert these drivers into your XP cd and do a fresh reinstall (or use F6 floppy, which I don't have)...
 
I give up at last. There is problem that seeems never to be solved by anyone or any dealer. Then i decided to send my mobo back to my dealer and offer to keep broken mobo for themselves and send me a new one to use. I mean no new DS3 back. A new mobo and i'm gonna pay upgrade cost immidiately. I'll never use DS3 again. I'm just sick of those IDE problems. It cost me for three months. Never used properly by me. Endless tests and win setups, bios setups, daily documentary tracking. Long night experiments... I'm just consumed by this endless game. What an unfortunate experience for me. I've just want to use a safe and secure computer but i've failed.
 
Anyone know if the @bios works under Windows Vista for DS3?

I don't have a floppy drive so I'm wondering if there's other ways to flash the bios.

Is it possible/reliable to flash from flash drive?


The reason I want to update my bios is because sometimes after reboot it just shows a black screen. I usually have to retry a couple times for it to boot to bios and to windows.
I'm wondering if this is a known issue and could be fixed with F10 bios.

The way around I used because I don't have a floppy is to use a bootable CD, then go to the directory with the bios file on the hard drive using dos command line. You can create a bootable CD using Nero.

As for the flash drive, there are websites out there that shows how to make them bootable as well. I don't know off the top of my head, however.
 
i just installed a raptor x as system disk on the intel ports and 2 250 wd caviars in raid 0 on the jmicron ports. Worked like a charm. Wondering why ppl whine so much 😵. Haven`t had a singel issue with this board ever. Only issue is that ived had is that its running to damn fast ^_^ .

Maybe due to poor or "less than stellar" choice of memory sticks and CPU?
Anything less than: Cas 4 PC6400 memory and a Core2 Duo CPU seems to generate complaints...

 
After I install vista, the computer seen quite a bit slower than before, Do I need ot instal the motherboard chipset driver to get full speed?

Vista's quite the resource hog. I didn't notice any improvement in performance on mine when I installed additional chipset drivers. Device manager seemed to indicate everything was working ok without them. Main driver to install would be for you graphics card, although if you've got nvidia like me you may the drivers somewhat problematic currently.

After flashing to F10 it still haven't fixed the problems I had.
Sometimes the computer will freeze, and when I reset the computer I will just get a black screen without seeing the BIOS and windows.
I usually have to fix it by switching the PSU's power botton to off then on to get it to work again.
Wondering if anyone have experienced the same issue that can help me, thanks!

UGH!!

I got my e4300 setup going last night and booted it up. I have two issues though.

1. I connected the cpu fan to the cpu-fan socket and the fan didn't start up upon boot. So I shut it down and switched it to the System Fan socket and it worked... but in the BIOS, the system fan RPM on my Tuniq Tower ranges from 400-1100 RPMs (TT comes with speed controller). I thought the stock RPMs for Tuniq were 1000- 2000. (BIOS had no option to change speeds for the sysfan nor cpu fan, for that matter, or is there?) The sysfan socket is what's limiting the RPMs? Is my CPU fan socket dead?

2. I looked in BIOS (F10) for temps and mobo temp looked fine at 27C but the cpu temp was at around 17C! Dead temp sensor or what?

1. Disable fan control in bios to run the fan at full speed.

2. Use CoreTemp to check temperatures. The bios is usually around 10 degrees lower.

I'll take a more careful look in the bios for the fan control.

I've tried Speed Fan and the mobo and cpu readings were switched around. I tried Everest Home and the CPU readings didn't even show up.

I guess if my cpufan socket is dead, this has to go back.
 
Here is the issue I am currently having. Hopefully someone can at least point me in the right direction as I am baffled.

The PC boots up fine without any issues (except it has a 1 short beep at initial startup which seems to only happen after it's been powered down a while). Just to give some background, this is a brand new PC which I just parted together so all the hardware is new. Once I try to install my Windows OS (Vista), I go through the install like normal and get to the screen where it says "Completing Installation". Now the problem I am running into is that after the machine is on 5-10 minutes I will start to get a series of beeps from the PC. The beeps do not seem to coincide with any specific pattern and everything seems to be running just fine (except the installation is seemingly hanging as I have waited over 30 minutes without finishing while sitting at the "Completing Installation" screen). Another thing I noticed is usually after a minute the beeps stop and then restart another 5 minutes later (if I leave the PC running for 30 minutes or longer the beeps do not stop until I reboot). Here is an example of the length of beeps if it helps:

(1) 2 Seconds
(2) 2 Seconds
(3) 4 Seconds
(4) 2 Seconds
(5) 6 Seconds
(6) 4 Seconds
(7) 4 Seconds

I checked the bios to ensure it wasn't a overheating issue and my cpu temp is steady around 30c. I tried to reseat the ram as well as the video card and it still is having the same issues. Is there maybe some odd bios setting I am missing. I have not done any bios updates or changed any types of voltages yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
 
I seem to be running into a wall above 450 Mhz FSB.

I'm running the DS3 with an E6400 and Patriot 2x1gb DDR2-667 Cas4 1.8V.

I've tried the F5, F7, F8i, and F10 BIOS's and have generated very similar results with each.

I don't believe my RAM is holding me back, as I can set my FSB to 420 Mhz and do the 5/4 memory divider to make the RAM run at DDR2-1040 Cas5 @ 2.2V and its Orthos stable. The system is also Orthos stable with a 430 Mhz FSB with the 1:1 divider for DDR2-860 with 4-4-4-10 timings and 2.0V.

I've disabled everything in the rest of the BIOS that was unnecessary and have played around with the PCI-E frequency and have upped the voltages a bit (VDimm +0.2-.4, FSB +.2, VMch +.2, Vcore 1.45-1.475) but can't reliably push it over 450 FSB...or make it Orthos stable at 450.

Is there anything else I should try to push it, or has my chip or mobo hit a wall at 450. I have a very early e6400...one that came around a time when it seemed like the sky was the limit with those chips, so I feel that it probably can go a lot further...
 
Just set up the following system:

C2D E6400
DS3
GSkill 2GB DDR2 800
Arctic Freezer 7

Seems to be idling between 42-45...which seems really high to me. I'm wondering if the arctic silver 5 just needs time to spread out. It's been about an hour.

Any thoughts on why the temps would be this high? Using Orthos, it's hitting 56-58 on each core under a full load.
 
might not be the right board for this issue, but I have a pretty damn fast computer so why do my mp3s stutter when I maximize or minimize windows? Is it something in the BIOS like the EIST? can't figure it out.

it's what i have to do to get stable - are you cooling the NB? what kind of cooling do you have? you have much better ram than me too. where'd you get your ram?
