Every version of the DS3 uses solid capacitors, the S3 uses electrolytic.

yea ds3 rev1&2 both have solid capacitors. Ive owned a rev1 & 2 and posted earlier the apparent differences that I could see.
 
Ok I've run into a new problem with this board. My 465 FSB is stable (Orthos for 15+ hours) but I get boot problems with it. It seems like the highest FSB without boot problems is 430 FSB which is what I'm using now.

Vcore @ 1.33125
FSB @ +0.1

The problem is mostly during cold boots. It would boot, then shutdown again, boot, shut down again. It does this 4 or 5 times before breaking the cycle and then it would use the hard drive for something (HD LED lights up) and it just stays in this stage. The screen is blank because all of this happens before the first BIOS screen. The only way to get out of this is to wait for it to get to the "hard drive stage" and then manually shut it down. When I boot up again, the overclock reverts back to stock settings like I just had a bad overclock.

Again, this happens mostly for cold boots. I think it has only happened once or twice during a reboot. What bugs me is that the overclock at 465 FSB is stable so it shouldn't be a shortage of voltage. I put some more volts into the processor and it still has this problem. I also removed my X-Fi sound card because that was suggested in an earlier post, but that didn't help either. Anyone know what might be wrong here?

Also, in case it is a voltage problem, how much is the recommended amount? Since the voltage drop seems to be pretty big, do I need to put in a lot more?
 
same thing happens to me when I OC too much - it will start fine unless I leave it for a while (like go to work) and when I come back it may or may not boot. If the bus is too high, it will definitely not boot cold.
 
not really sure, but that sig is now wrong - it wasnt stable at 450, maybe 430ish... i'm now at 8x400 and i have to pump up CPU volts over 1.45 to do it.
 
Have you all tried other BIOS versions? I've stuck with the F7 that my board shipped with and I haven't had any cold boot issues. There could be any number of BIOS settings (or just plain old fashioned computer oddity 😛) that could cause it. I followed the settings found here http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware...erclocking-Guide-v1-ftopict197995.html and everything has been smooth so far. I think I'm gonna see how far I can push this thing tonight.
 
I flashed to F8 because F7 had that problem with my X-Fi card. I also tried F9 but it didn't solve the problem and had less overclock than F8.

Could you expand on that? This board is really hard to use relatively speaking. I did attempt to search for posts with your name but I only found this thread and another probable. Still, when I tried to search in the thread I could not find your posts.

Does anyone have any advice on the memory issue? Is that Crucial XMS 5-5-5-12 I posted about OK? What would be better? How important are the timings for overclocking? If I get "tight" timings, does that make for the best overclock?

Ok, I got Windows to come up on 8X415=3320, but I had to put CPU @ 1.525 (SpeedFan only reads 1.49 though) and FSB +0.2V and DDR +0.4V. I can't even test stability because she would go over 70C on load I bet. I'm going to get some better cooling - I thought I wanted water, but I've been doing some reading and the newer HSFs look pretty nice. If I go with air - what is the best HSF that also has low noise?
 
I don't think it's healthy to use that much voltage. Why don't you just use around 380x9 and set memory to 4:5 (2.5 in the bios)? I have the same memory as you and it can handle ~460 MHz. This way you get a higher clock speed, less voltage and a cooler cpu. Also, you only need +0.3 on the memory.

And btw, does anyone with an X-Fi card here not have problems with the F7 bios? I'm really tempted to go back to F7 because the cold boot issues is indeed a bios problem after reading a bunch of earlier posts.

Healthy schmealthy - i don't keep CPUs very long anyway. I just booted at 3.42Ghz with 9X380🙂 Can't keep it here too long though. I'm just testing and will go harder when Iget my new cooling solution, whatever that may be.

I can't get my CPU stable at these speeds unless my volts are up to 1.50 or greater. And, what's the difference of using 4:5 or 1:1 if you have same final speed? To speed up your ram?

I tried 2.5 on ram (960) but she wouldn't boot up all the way on 380 so i had to back it down to 370 for ram to be used at 2.5 - it would get to desktop and at the point where Windows blips and is ready to play it rebooted. I even upped the volts on ram to +0.4 and FSB is +0.2V. Not sure I want to go +0.5V.
 
Weird. I ran Orthos with my memory at 465 and it was stable for 15+ hours. It only had +0.3v with 5-5-5-15 timings. All the reviews I've read only got it to around 450. Maybe I'm lucky and got a good pair?

Maybe. When you have ram set to auto, what does it say for your ram? this ram should be 4-5-4-15 but mine says 5-5-5-15 in SPD.

 
Mine says that too. I thought it was just a bios thing but CPU-Z also says 5-5-5-15 for DDR2-800. Have you tried running it at 4-5-4-15 with 400 FSB?

Heya people.. I've got a few questions to ask..

The first is that when I got my E6400, I went to my existing OS and saw 2 threads/2 cores in the Windows' task manager. However after reinstalling windows on a new pair of Seagate 320GB drives, the OS does not show 2 threads. One core is apparently not recognised by Windows and so my E6400 works like a single core CPU. There are absolutely no errors or any sort messages from Windows to tell me that something is wrong. Even "Everest" shows only 1 operational core. I've installed all the chipset drivers that came along with the board. Any way to enable the other core?
My board is DS3P Rev2.0 though. I tried searching on this board but came up with nothing.. is the only difference between DS3 and DS3P are the audio chip and firewire? What about BIOS? The board's F1 BIOS is dated 31 October and F3 is 27th December. Apparently there are no substantial changes compared to DS3, that constantly gets performance/features updates with the BIOS.. does that mean that DS3P is inferior to DS3 in terms of OCing ? I hope not..

Another problem that I got is with my Audigy 2ZS card. None of its drivers seem to work without giving me the Blue screen upon start of Windows. As soon as I disable the drivers' the problem is gone though. Thus I have to rely on the onboard audio for now. The blue screen error is the IRQL type of error. The problem started even before I enabled my onboard audio and installed the drivers for it. Any ideas whether changing my PCI slot might fix it? Currently the audio card is in closest slot to my x1950pro so would changing it to one that is the furthest away from x1950pro make any difference?

#1 I read articles about mobos being capable of activating/deactivating cores
Try searching BIOS if there is such an option.Perhaps new drives messed up with BIOS

#2 Some boards with intel p965 chipset have Creative sound cards incompatibilty issues
Try updating BIOS. (Although my sound blaster live 5.1 works fine)
 
kamyk: weird, maybe that was my mind thinking it was a straight 400

stopsign: cold boot is an issue just about anyone with a big overclock runs into with this board its all over this thread almost every page, common issue - no true fix right now.

maddog: dunno about your ds3p, I dont have any options for that on my mobo. Try checking for a hyperthreading option, I know on my last via motherboard if you turned off hyperthreading the computer only seen 1 core.

disk2: my post on the differences between rev 1 and rev 2 (note that I had a 965G 1.0, and a 965p 2.0, however throughout this thread it appears some things have been confirmed by others):
There is no onboard firewire still.

the rectangle backplate you put on your motherboard now has a pretty silkscreen and matt background making everything clearly labeled. It has a breakaway port for firewire so id imagine it is for cost savings to use with another board.


the ds3 2.0 has a newer straight finned northbridge heatsink instead of that stupid wavey crown shaped do nothing one.
there are 4 fan headers now. No more picking your 2 favorite fans.

labeling looks to be changed on the silkscreen, little easier for things like the front pin header.

ships with f7 bios

same slots for pci/pcix1/x16/etc

still has the freakin stupid front audio connector on the BACK of the board where no FRONT connector is made to reach.
 
a question abotu the D9 issue - if you say my RAM isn't good, is that because of this board or in general? Should you have D9 RAM? If it's just this board, then I'll get the p5B Deluxe and be done with this board. That board seems pretty nice and you don't lose your OC every time your PC cools down. If I need new ram, someone tell me what to get (in the sub-$250 range)
 
What's the advantage of using the purple SATA ports instead of the yellow ones? There has been mention of this issue earlier but I don't think it was answered.

Also, would it be safe to move my hard drive holding my OS from a yellow port to a purple port?
