ok, I will be getting this board on friday or monday from newegg and i need some pointer. I know that all 965 chip set doesn't have native ide controller. All 3 of my hdd are IDE and i also purchase a ide card along with mobo. I plan to reinstall window when that come. How exactly will this work? Here is what i imagain:

Connect 1 hdd and 1 dvd rom at start and install window from there. After that, install the ide card so i cna connect both my remaining hdd to ide controller. I read soem wierd that window driver can overwrtie the original jmicro driver and i won;t be able to use the on board ide, what is up with that? Also, I have no intendion of using raid, ever. Can soemone suggest me the way to install window without killing the board?

Eh? The ICH8 drives 4 SATA channels (four ports), and 2 IDE/ATA channels (two ports; master/slave per port, so that makes 4 IDE devices). There is also an additional "GIGABYTE SATA" / JMicron SATA controller that's on board, which drives another 2 SATA channels (two ports).

If you want to use your PCI IDE controller, you can. The BIOS can even boot off of it.

TheSlamma, what became of this?

I have the exact same memory you do, and I'm also having similar problems as you (ONLY during gaming, but not for 20 minutes; usually it takes hours upon hours (yeah, I leave FFXI running for many hours sometimes)). It doesn't happen when using Sandra (I can benchmark + burn-in test for hours w/out any problem).

I haven't tried adjusting the voltage or running memtest86. I should try memtest86 (I'm quite familiar with it). The memory you and I are using is supposedly "specced" for 1.9V (whatever that's supposed to mean), but I've always left the BIOS to decide what the voltage and speeds should be (so that probably means using 1.8V and letting the SPD decide).

I ran memtest86 earlier this evening for 2.5 hours (BIOS revision: F7), and experienced no errors. I may need to let it run longer.

Also, I should note that hitting Ctrl-F1 in the BIOS causes extra BIOS options to appear (others may already know this, but this came as a surprise to me this evening). More "stuff" to tinker with.

I've had a week+ to tinker with this.

First thing, above all else: my problem is in fact not related to the C1E BIOS feature after all!!! I had a system lock in an identical manner while in FFXI while C1E was disabled in the BIOS. So I've been barking up the wrong tree -- this has got to be some sort-of bad system component (including the motherboard?). Therefore I've set C1E back on in the BIOS. Ahhh, good temperatures again.

So the first thing I did was buy an S3 (not DS3) board to try that out -- the board was bad. It will not POST. :-( Back to ZZF it goes...

I've since run memtest86 for 2.5 hours with no problems (similar to my SiSoft Sandra results).

I'm going to try getting another DS3 board and another video card to see if either of those is the problem. Another idea I have is to increase the PCI Latency in the BIOS (via the hidden Ctrl-F1 feature) from 32 to 64 to see if that makes a difference (maybe it's my Audigy 2 ZS which is wigging out, who knows), as some of my other systems default to a higher PCI latency.

Ah, indeed you're right. (I don't use IDE, so I never go looking for the connectors). I always thought the black port was IDE, not FDD... hahaha. :D

So the situation should still be just fine. If your Windows CD happens to have drivers for your external PCI IDE controller (I don't know if it's a RAID controller or what), you should be able to install Windows onto that -- and boot off of it -- with this system.

Of course you can also use the ICH8-driven neon green IDE port.

If I were in your shoes, I'd hook two of my IDE drives to the external PCI IDE controller, and one as the master on the neon green IDE port (install Windows on this drive), and the CD/DVD as the slave on the same port.

Do i need to setup the rais driver to use the ide? I read somewhere that the ide on this board is on a raid setting

I think the IDE port is really from JMicron, not ICH8.

Can someone walk me through how to flash this BIOS? I download it from the website... and I enter the flash screen and the instructions (to me) are very vague. I don't want to critically mess something up.

I own an S3 (no "D"). I am having one hell of a time getting IDE devices working properly (with the exception of the floppy), either off the mobo's port or 2 external controllers. While PATA HD's will work fine off the mobo's IDE port, off a Promise Ultra100 TX2 it reboots when it tries to get into Windows, same goes for a Rosewill RC-208 (SiI 0680 based) card. My 2 DVD-ROM cards will work off the Promise board but the burner maxes out at 1.8x, while the Rosewill card just reboots as well.

Damn, what a pain.

If it turns out to be Corsair's problem, this would be the SECOND time I've had problems with their RAM, and I knew I shouldn't have bought their stuff again... sigh.

(NOTE: I've been posting about my problems with the C1E BIOS feature on this board, but as I found out a few days ago, I've been completely wrong: I had the system lock up while that option was DISABLED! So it's not that BIOS option which is doing it. I'll post about that in a moment...)

Sorry it took abit to get back,

I ended up finding out it was one of the sticks of RAM was bad. (would report errors in orthos after 5-10 minutes) at any voltage from 1.9v-2.1v. The other stick was fine at the timings the board set for me (5-5-5-18 1.9v)

Corsair did not want to take the results from Orthos or from memtest86 though, they would only accept memtest86+, they wanted to blame my mobo and the PSU for my game instability. I explained to the guy that I would run the tests on the good stick for 4 hours in orthos and it was fine. Then I would pull that good one out, put the bad one in the exact same slot even and within 10 minutes I had 4 errors in orthos. Change voltage to the 2.1 he asked and it got even worse.

I ended up getting ahold of ZZF and exchanged the Corsair for the Kingston HyperX set instead. Got em in yesterday, It runs 5-5-5-15 2.0v ran orthos overnight without a single issue. I have had to warranty a Kingston modeule or 2 for my work before and they never put up a fight like Corsair did, thats why I made the decision to move. If I'm gonna deal with a lifetime warranty I don't want that kinda pain.

I was wondering this too--I hear a lot of heat issues with the northbridge... and people are offering very interesting or sometimes very makeshift advise about how to deal with it. However, are there any fans or solutions that can be more non-warranty-voiding derived?

As far as i'm aware this should be fine, it's what i'm going to do when i get my DS3. The only problem I can see is the heat of the NB melting the glue ... here's some info on hot glue:

There's two different types, low heat and high heat, the low melts at about 120C and the hot at about 190C and you need the correct low temp or high temp gun depending on the glue you're using.

If your NB is running hot enough, ie. 120C, to melt the glue you're long gone anyway but you may as well use the high temp stuff. Just make sure you only use a little otherwise you'll porbably end up decreasing the efficiency of the heatsink by covering up some of the fins.

This is basically a cheap solution that works well, you're probably looking at around $10 even if you have to go out and buy a glue gun. Your other option is to get a 3rd party HSF, I've heard good things about the thermalright hr-05.

I've seen someone use zip ties to attach a fan to the NB, the ties fit under the fat fins of the NB. Maybe an easier and less messy way than hot glue.

I am sorry to bother you all with a total newbie question - my native language is not English and I'm having a hard time installing my 250 GB hard drive on my DS4. It appears to be 250 GB in IDE mode in bios prior to installation, but after using that GIGABYTE SATA-RAID controller it is only recognized as being 127 GB. Therefore I will have to reinstall everything again:-( But prior to that I would like to be sure to do the right thing this time - and it seems that Sorgon2 has got it right, only I need some clarification:
1. Install WinXP with default settings in Bios.
2. Install the Intel drivers (from the Motherboard CD-rom?) in Windows.
3. Open the cabinet, take out the SATA cable from the motherboard and switch it into a different one.
4. Reboot and enter bios where you change to NATIVE SATA (I wonder where:).

One small question: what driver is used to recognize the SATA-hard drive in step 1? When I used the GIGABYTE driver it only recognized half the drive...

I"ve got a brand new DS3 with a 6400 and 2gb OCZ Platinum XTC ram. I know the cpu ram and graphics card are all good, I tested them in my buddies rig. My botherboard however will not post.

When I power it up it does not beep at all. Occasionally it will power on, stay on for 2 seconds, power off for 1, and power back up and repeat.

I know the power supply is good (antec truepower 2.0 550)

Cleared the cmos, tried w/o ram to make it beep and nothing. Any suggestions?

EDIT:

My board is a revision 1.0 - I saw some earlier people posting that they had issues with OCZ ram and this board? But i've seen plenty of others running it without issue?

What is the verdict?

Probably the ram depends on the Bios, Version the F4 and later seem to work better with 2+v ram. I would try with a lower voltage stick (beg or borrow) and if it will post raise the dimm voltage to 2.1v then install the ozc ram.

what inexpensive 2gb ram do folks recommend? I'll be using this more of a unix workstation so no (or very little) overclocking but i'd like it to be super duper stable.

going to go try some cheap ddr2 to flash the bios to F7...luckily i have a friend close who has cheap ddr...otherwise i'd be SOL!
