This is exactly what I use and it has worked fine right out of the box. Just set the VDIMM voaltage to +.3 to make it 2.10. This RAM is also rated to work at 533 (1066) at 5.5.5.15.

I'm looking for a "budget" Core 2 Duo solution. I was to get the DS3 mobo and overclock with the stock Intel HSF (for now) on an E6300 or E6400, but the RAM I'm concerned about. Should I get DDR2 667, or 800? What is the max FSB (supported) by each. I would like to get a 2 GB kit for aroun $150, but I might get 1x 1024 MB for now and add another later. What would be a good "budget RAM" for this mobo?

i got the 5-5-5-12 kit, and it was stable at 4-4-4-10 @ 800MHz, and i got it to 5-4-5-10 @ 963MHz, which is pretty awesome IMHO. This stuff is a hell of a lot better that that OCZ platinum crap i bought before lol.

It varies quite a bit from what i have seen to people having problems with any overclock at all to seeing great success. Best i have seen browsing forums is around 450 or so while being stable.

I had to purchase the DS3 since my old amd system finally quit. It will be intersting to go back to intel after 7-8 years with AMD. The only drawback i have been able to find is that the motherboards cost 50% more then what a comparable AMD board costs. The DS3 was really the only board available at less then an outragous price currently.

I have to build another computer in the next 6 months so i expect ill be replacing the DS3 with nvidia's 590 board soon enough.


 
I didn't believe it first, but I just got to 480mhz prime stable with retail HSF nonetheless... booted windows at 500mhz

I setup a 120m fan blowing to NB heatsink, yet it's still very hot.

Unbelievable.
 
I've got a question. I've read some people are hot-gluing small fans to the northbridge heatsink. Is that something that's okay to do? I'd rather not replace the northbridge heatsink

I was wondering this too--I hear a lot of heat issues with the northbridge... and people are offering very interesting or sometimes very makeshift advise about how to deal with it. However, are there any fans or solutions that can be more non-warranty-voiding derived?
 
Does anyone know where I can get a SATA to IDE adapter? Someplace local(like circuit city or best buy) would be nice. I need to hook up 2 more IDE drives but this board only has 1 IDE port.

I had problems with G.SKILL DDR2 800; not sure about other stuff.

You'd be better off buying a IDE expansion card that you plug in a PCI slot.
 
Just fyi for those worried about OCZ and this board, several people (myself included) have gotten it to run just fine. The latest beta BIOS seems to have fixed any issues there.

Now for a couple of silly questions...the manual for the mobo says to hook the CPU fan up to either the CPU Fan or SYS Fan connector. I put it on the CPU Fan, so should I hook some other case fan up to the SYS connector? Also, what is a proper speed for the CPU fan to be at? Easy Tune is reporting it as running between 700-1000, and has a warning indicator by it. Is there something possibly wrong with it, or do the C2D fans just run slower?

I just set up mine with an e6400, 2gb corsair, 7900 gt, and all my old stuff. Probably the most painless PC setup I've had yet. Took me all of 20 minutes to get everything up and running.
 
I just bought that the Gskill 800 and read about all these issues. Some have reported no, but then I read about issues with Fortron power supplies.

Anyone heard of Fotron issues?

 
I have my 6600, 7900GT KO and DS3 on it's way. I need to pick up some ram tonight.

Obviously O/C is never a lock, but which of these sticks does AT think will OC better?

As far as i'm aware this should be fine, it's what i'm going to do when i get my DS3. The only problem I can see is the heat of the NB melting the glue ... here's some info on hot glue:

There's two different types, low heat and high heat, the low melts at about 120C and the hot at about 190C and you need the correct low temp or high temp gun depending on the glue you're using.

If your NB is running hot enough, ie. 120C, to melt the glue you're long gone anyway but you may as well use the high temp stuff. Just make sure you only use a little otherwise you'll porbably end up decreasing the efficiency of the heatsink by covering up some of the fins.

This is basically a cheap solution that works well, you're probably looking at around $10 even if you have to go out and buy a glue gun. Your other option is to get a 3rd party HSF, I've heard good things about the thermalright hr-05.

Hey is the 2gb corsair u mentioned the value select ddr2-667 sticks? Otherwise, our setups are eerily similar 🙂.

- E6300
- Gigabyte DS3
- Patriot DDR2 667 2GB kit
- Xclio Goodpower 500W PSU

I will update this thread when I get my system together and get some OC results! Woot!

I would stick with Patriot or Corsair for DS3.

Ewiz has some really good micron chips DDR2 800 you might want to check out.

Agreed not not spending more than $250.

You have the basics for a real good system. How about HSF?

I went ahead and purchased the Corsair DDR2 800 last night. It was a hard choice between the Patriot and Corsair, but Corsair was a few dollars cheaper and it seems people are having good results with it in the DS3 (not that Patriot isn't).

I have 2.5g AS5 (free!) and a Big Tyhoon on their way also (SVC.com).

I'm looking forward to having some fun overclocking these badboys 😀 Should be here on Monday.
