Hope it does not suck like FF12.

The theme music is lame, generic pop with no character at all, but I guess this is expected without Nobuo Uematsu.

Well, FF12 had a very poor gameplay to story ratio (way lots of gameplay; you'd have to play through hours to get a tad bit of story), and really, there wasn't much story at all.

FF13 is supposed to have its story and pacing a lot better controlled, but at the expense of much free roam exploration. It's gonna be really linear, with few towns and with a lot of hand holding. We'll see how it plays out.

Is it true party members are ai controlled?

They seemed to have turned this into a dumbed down interactive movie.

So, I'm trying to decide... 360 or PS3.

FF13 doesn't have any online component that I know about, so the fact that most of my friends/family have a 360 doesn't mean anything. The 360 requires you to switch discs, while not a huge deal, it is a minor annoyance whenever you have to do it. I looked up some more info and found that the 360 also runs at a reduced resolution compared to the PS3. Given that I have a 720p TV, the PS3's 720p resolution is good for me.

I would like to try and show support for Square making more main FF games for non-Sony consoles though, which buying it for the 360 would help to show.

Nobody knows how important it is for you to promote Square games on Microsoft consoles, so no one can really answer for you. The PS3 is likely superior for all the regions you said, but your personal philosophies may be more important to you.

The battles are reported to require a LOT more management and effort than previous FF games, so I think calling it an interactive movie is a bit unjust.

Haha probably not too much since it seems like the 360's version isn't so great in other areas. It's kind of odd though, because most multi-platform games are better on the 360 :p. I wonder if it's related to the 360 being "added in" later on.

I don't think the 360 honestly needs promotion though... the sheer split between gamers on both consoles is enough, but it does help to show support I guess :p.

there's no story continuity between FF installments, and gameplay from what it sounds like deviates significantly from FF norms anyway, so I doubt previous experience with FF would make one any less lost.

The FF12 story was a 100% rip from Star Wars anyway. The empire and rebels. Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, Emperor, Vader, Millennium Falcon, sky pirates, etc.

Maybe i'm just bitchy today, but this often sounds a bad and unpersuasive argument.

You love FF7 and it blew you away, yet it relies on that spiky haired androgynous character. In fact, Cloud fits that description the best, all the way through his blithering "watch me get amnesia and knocked out" phase. The other characters, from Squall to (skipping over Zidane) Tidus were atleast more dynamic and didn't reach as 'emo' of a status that Cloud was (and that is saying a lot considering we are comparing him to Squall).

You also seem to not enjoy the 'high tech' stuff from FF8....yet FF7 was about Mako Reactors, driving in a car, cloud pimping off his motocycle, with a big ass fucking cannon in Junon, and genetic engineering up the wazoo. Cait Sith was a robotic droid doll controlled by the Turks, Cid Highwind had his own fucking rocket and was in training as an astronaut for Shinra at one point....and all those guys run around with guns! Hell the intro video started off with a fly by of the technological marvel of Midgar and having the Cloud leap off a mako powered train....You sure that FF8 was the one to add a lot of 'high tech' stuff? I'd say FF7 was the one to do it, yet people beat up on ff8.
And let us not even talk about cheesy love ballads LOL! Yeahhh the Tifa/Aerith question was not cheesy at all! Watch Cloud go for both, oh wait, there goes Aerith...and once he understands that Aerith and Zack were for eachother, he goes back to Tifa rediscovering his 'true love'. But none of this was after Aerith dies of course. And of course, you can't take either on a date, right? Nothinng was corny at alllllllllllllllll...at alllllllllllllllll. At least in FF8, at the very least, you could say that Squall's relationship, at the minimum, appeared more realistic - having no interest in a person, beginning to care for him/her but trying to deny those feelings because you don't want to get too close, and finally just becoming open and clear about what you want once you realize you are about to lose the person.

And if we want to talk about corny and ridiculous....FF9 "Oh watch now we care about crystals in the very last minute when it comes flying out of left field!" comes to mind. And as great as FF9 was, I ultimately remember way more details from 7 and 8. FF9 has way more haze, which makes me say "how memorable was it really, especially when people in the past have talked about how FF9 did a good job by taking one back to the roots?"

It seems there are quite a bit of 'generalizations' there...to where it breaks down your whole argument.

I don't know why people treat FF7 so much more different when it is actually very similar to the other FF games. I'm not a Ff7 hater, I like it very much as well, but let us be evenhanded about these things rather than setup a double standard because everyone imagines FF7 was something more than it really was.

FF7's environment and art direction took on a dark and apocalyptic style. Everything didn't look like an ornate, sterile hospital nor a shiny futuristic beach resort. The different environments in FF7 seemed more creative than in the successive FF7's (with the exception of 9, but that is different). Ever since I have played 7, I have hoped that each one afterward would somehow measure up but they all fall short. The only JRPG that I've played that I have enjoyed as much has been Xenogears.

Queasy, how about making this the official thread? I'm considering picking this up on Tuesday, but I'm not sure since I don't want to be dedicated to it for the next few weeks of gaming time. Waiting to read up on a couple more reviews before I make a decision.

Picked mine up about an hour ago. I also got the collectors Edition Piggyback Guide.

Number 60,548 of 210,000 not bad but not epic at last it is under the 100k mark!

Anybody have any thoughts so far? I may try to pick this up after work today.

played about an hour last night,so initial impressions are:

-sharp cut scenes
-linear as hell (for first 15 hours i hear)
-vanille will get on your nerves
-i like the combat system; mix of ff12 and ffx; even though i hated ff12s battle system
-hate the scoring system after each battle
-the whole fal'Cie story is confusing...gotta read up on it first i guess to know whats going on
- you all suck (typical sandeagle response)

I've heard everything from 15 hours to 30 hours. The spoiler below references what chapter it supposedly "opens up", taken from the IGN review. I stuck it in spoiler tags just incase somebody doesn't want to know how many chapters are in the game.

The game "opens up" for players on chapter 11 of 13, so it takes a while.

I got into the second "area" last night. Granted I had a few drinks before I got the game, but here are some tentative thoughts.

The battle system is terrific, but horribly easy. When they say it was more active, they emphasis should be on active. I've been getting 4/5 or 5/5 stars in every battle so far while pretty much mashing buttons. The chain attack should have been introduced earlier, and battles seem to be tuned around that. Right now, I have my basic attack and one area-of-effect type attack for each lead character. Not being able to control your party members is certainly different, but it doesn't seem bad so far. I'd give the system a 5/5 if battles were more difficult, but going to dock it to a 4/5 FOR NOW.

The characters are memorable. None of them have grated on my nerves like Yuna did in FFX. It's a fairly unique cast with some different types of relationships. Maybe current technology just helps me empathize with the characters better, but I'm rating character development a 5/5 for now.

The story isn't showing a lot zip so far. Not much to say over than there are some heavy flashbacks to one of the more highly regarded Final Fantasies. Even the introductory movie made me think that this is the direction Square would have taken that game if they had the technology then.

There are TONS of save points with integrated shops and this is probably going to bother the purists who want a steeper difficulty curve. You might as well be able to save at any time. It's just too much. You also heal up after every battle. Most of the items you remember from previous FF games are back. The cut scenes are some of the best I've seen yet. Period.

I'm satisfied, but the story needs to be clearer and start picking up steam. This definitely isn't a Xenogears for whomever mentioned it earlier, but it seems to be solid in its own right so far.
