So, this site lists a bunch of BIOSes for the M68xx series of laptops, but the author appears to have only done testing on the first few, and the posts in this thread give sketchy comparisons between the different versions (not that I blame them). I'm wondering if anyone has done any extensive testing with the various BIOSes to find out which one(s) show a performance or stability advantage, which one(s) work well with linux, and which one(s) work well with 64 bit OSes.

It sounds like the old 0F05.P00 works best, even better than the newer ones. I've also heard the 0F07 BIOS works well and that there is a new 0F08 BIOS but I haven't heard how well it runs or how the NSF04 runs.

I'm wondering if maybe the rampant popularity of this thread will spark one of the Anandtech editors to do some extensive testing and reporting (hint, hint, wink, wink).

yeah i would like a review for from the editors. that would be great. of either of the emachines or the gateway. or more laptops in general. i love their reviews. they are the best on the net.

Anyone have any news on the 7410GX from Gateway? Apparently CompUSA has them stocked but the specs look terrible. I'm assuming this is a minimum configuration. Anyone have any ideas on what the "max" configuration is? Is it only a processor upgrade from the 7405GX?

I really hope they'll eventually put a 128mb 9600/9700 at some point although I doubt it.

What happened to the E-machines 68xx series? Is it dead? I was really looking forward to buying the step up from the 6811. The Gateways look like old E-machines rebadged to me.

Just a confirmation that I have experienced the Gateway 7405GX hinge cracking problem on a laptop that's about three weeks old, and has been treated like gold dust.

That's exactly what they are. However, they do have a nicer screen (xbrite) and a faster DVD burner (8x)

--UPGRADE QUERY--

I've been a happy owner of the Emachine 6805 -- I will be away from my desktop for an extended period which has lead me to this thread. I am looking to turn this rig into a better gaming platform.

My rig is stock. I've elected to upgrade the HD and RAM.

Are there any suggestions on available components or any deals on the market at this time? I have heard Hitachi and Corsair thrown around a bit. Any help would be much obliged.

well a couple months ago outpost was selling 1GB of PC2700 SODIMMS for $150 which is an incredible deal but I dunno if they have the same price now. I bought in for it and it's happily chugging away in my M6805. As far as the HD most people just suggest getting the Hitachi 7K60. Best bang for the buck 7200rpm drive.

I got the transcend 1GB 2700 from newegg...
I just upgraded to the new Seagate 100GB 7200 Hard drive. It is definitely faster than the old 80G 4200 my 6811 came with.

Newegg has a new mobile AMD64 3700 that I do not know if this is compatible with, but at 450$, I'll wait.

A thread here
Describes how to use certain apps to tweak the voltage of your lapppy for more battery life. In my last experiece i had my laptop crash multiple times while using clock get to take the speed below 800mhz.
I was able to stably run Prime95 Tourture at 800mhz on only .80 volts. This is using the lowest muliplier and the lowest voltage setting. From that point the only way to take the processing speed lower would be to use clockgen and drop he fsb speed. The big question is why would the computer crash when its running below spec? Even with a System defaut .95 volts and 800 mhz i cant runn it lower. Any one know? Im not too fimiliar with over/underclocking on the K8 platform, only K7.

Since the K8T800 chipset doesn't have locked pci/agp multipliers it is very sensitive to front side bus overclocking. Most systems can handle 10-15% OVERclock but even 5% UNDERclock is usually enough to crash them. It's just part of the design.

eMachine site is just laughable...really.
I need a replacement foot too. Anyone know?

Anyone find a updated driver for the wireless card in the M6805 so we can take advantage of the latest wireless security options?

I've been using a wpa on my M6810 for about 4 months now. Seems to work great with the occasional loss of connection and immediate reconnection. Mildly irritating at worst.

I'm havng problems with my media reader. I have upgraded to Win XP SP2 PRO, Upgraded memory and Hard Drive, sent my machine back to have the hinge fixed and have no idea when this problem started. Putting in a Compactflash card in the slot results in a Unidentified USB Device connected error. It gets installed in the Device manager as an Unidentified USB Device. I can't even manually change the driver since it only gives me the Unidentified Device on the list even if I choose "I will choose the driver to install" then uncheck the "Show compatible hardware" box. Using an external reader works flawlessly.

anybody had this problem ,or a solution to it?

thanks

Anyone recommend a notebook sleeve for the m6809?
I would like to carry the notebook inside my bigger backpack but it has no protection.
