This is, without a doubt, the scariest game I have ever played. I've been glued to it all day with the curtains closed and the sound cranked.

It runs decently on my system but it still chugs when there's lots of action on screen. I have:
Athlon XP 2400+
1.25GB DDR RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB

I am running 800x600 in Medium settings, all the special effects in Advanced I have turned on. I might do some experimenting later to see how each one affects performance.

This game is so good that I am debating ordering new parts as we speak just to play it better.

And for those of you overclocking your video card, good luck doing it with Doom3. I had mind mildly o/c'ed since I first got it and no games have ever showed any artifacting -- until Doom3. Carmack wasn't lying when he said that people o/cing might have problems as Doom3 accesses certain transistors on the GPU that no game has used before, so extra heat is generated.

Everything about this game is good. It's freakishly dark and you will find yourself using your flashlight 90% of the time and I'm not joking. I find it best to bind the flashlight to one of your extra mouse buttons so you can quickly switch back and forth between the flashlight and your current weapon.

The PDA feature is great. It's not just something thrown in - it is crucial to the game.

Two big thumbs up so far, and I am not very far yet.

Jeeez! This thread has 2600 views. thats 200 less that the "free full games" sticky. Anyways...

Was curious, since you seem to have scored a copy of the game. Without spoiling too much, I have a few questions:

1) When you look down, do you see your feet, like in Theif 3? Or are you a "floating head" like in all other id games?

2) How big, really, is the full install?

3) Are there loading screens? Or does it transition like HL1 where there is a little "loading" in-game?

1. You don't see your feet.
2. Full install is 1.62GB
3. There are loading screens but only when the map changes, and each map is very large. Loading takes about 10-20 seconds but like I said the maps are big, at least 30-60mins of gameplay per map.

I went ahead and switched it to low quality mode, the only difference I can notice is that some of the textures are lower detail up close. But the effects and lighting are the same as Medium. Since this performs a lot better I am leaving it at that. It's amazing how good this game looks in "low" quality.

Matt Stone,

I didn't know you were a member here either! I rarely post here anymore though.

Now I gotta take a break for an hour or so! It will have you screaming "F*CK!!!!" every 30 seconds, actually makes your heart jump!

**POTENTIAL SPOILER BELOW****

BTW, as you all know the BF9000 makes a return. I haven't used it yet but I just saw it in action in the distance (another marine was using it)

1.) No feet, but when you bring up your PDA, you see his arms swing up and bring the PDA to his face.

2.) 1.51GB on my system

3.) There was a loading screen transitioning from one block of the compound to another, not sure if there's going to be more.

Graphics are very nice, I wasn't impressed with the textures but the lighting and character animation is INCREDIBLE. So far it's been very immerive.

Played at 1280x1024 @ high quality and it was very smooth, very playable. I might try 1600x1200 @ high quality to see how it goes. Just for kicks, I tried 1024x768 @ ultra quality for a few minutes and suprisingly it played well too, there were some hitches where it seemed to be loading textures but it was smooth 80% of the time. I couldn't see much difference between high and ultra quality though. This is on a stock Athlon 64 3200+, stock BFG G6800 GT OC, Asus K8V SE Deluxe, and 1GB of HyperX PC3500 memory.

One thing I did notice is I couldn't get surround sound working on my 4.1 setup (Audigy 2 and classic Klipsch v2.400's), so I changed my speaker settings to 5.1 in Windows Control Panel and checked off the surround sound option in Doom3. I could get speech in my front two speakers so evidently the center channel isn't required, just a FYI for you 4 channel users.

1) Is the pace of the game (walking speed) close to Far Cry? (IE: slow)
2) Does the game come in a DVD clase like Deus Ex or a regular CD case?
3) Are you playing with Headphones or speakers?

Don't get me wrong, the textures are nice and all but it didn't WOW me like the animation and lighting did. However some of the ingame movie's face closeups do look very good.

AIW Radeon 9700 Pro

Daaamn slow at 1024x768 High Quality. When There's no monster on screen it's fine but on mildly intense fights it stutters. Actuallt on some of the bigger, complex rooms it also bogs down a lot.
I love this game, but i need my 6800GT!!!!!

So far got stuck mid way through the game, oh yeah and the BFG9000 is not as awesome as i expect it to be but the shotgun kick serious butt!! chainsaw is very nice, it will slice and dice through all sorts of monsters easily but you gotta be up close and get very personal with the uglies :)
Berserk mode pickup is still there and it is cool :)

I have one burning question to ask those currently in posession of the title:

earlier in development, it was mentioned that since lights were all dynamic, you could shoot them out.

unfortunately they didnt implement that in the "alpha" leaked build...maybe because it was too early in development, or maybe because they werent gonna do that at all.

my question: can ANY light be shot out, thus darkening a room?

Better GPU and faster CPU. That 1.3 would kill. I know fo someone who played it on a 1700XP and it was playable and still looked good.

I've never actually tried because the game is so freakin dark already. You will use your flashlight almost the whole time. I think this is part of the reason why it is so scary.

There is one part that literally made me stand up out of my chair. ** MILD SPOILER*** You enter this cramped dark hallway that is almost pitch black and this deep rumbling/thumping starts, you hear demon screams, and then the hallways starts lighting up with pentagrams and other satanic symbols, almost to the rhythm of a heart beat. I must have stood there for 3 minutes before walking forward because you just know something is gonna happen. Then you slowly inch your way forward, other little sounds make you turn in all directions, then BAM your screen goes deep red, bass shakes the room, and a pinky demon spawns to your left and thats when i literally JUMPED. All that build up for just one pinky demon. You are so startled that you can't shoot right and you start spraying bullets in all directions while the pinky demon gouges at you, few more shot gun blasts BAM BAM and he dies and I have 4 health left.

That's just one example of the scaryness of this game, the game is filled with stuff like this.

It's actually draining to play it.

When you get this, make your room is DARK and the sound is BLASTING.

Kami, I PMed you on the HTF...but I'll ask here now. Are you using your 5.1 setup, and if you are, how is it?

I'm trying to decide whether to piece together a 5.1 setup for my room (from spare HT parts), or just stick with my Sennheiser HD580s.

This is just for reference info.

Specs:
2500xp @ 185x12 ~3000xp
512mb PC3200 ram
aTi Radeon Pro 256mb flashed to XT (r360 core)
Audigy 1 OEM w/ logitech 560 4.1 speakers

I loaded up game with default opengl settings. I had overdirve enabled which pushed my card up to 418 from 411. I set resolution to 1024x768 using ca4.7's. In game i set detail to high and sound at its default setting.

I got the same artifacts when i first ran the game. Disabling Overdrive fixed that. I havent actually checked framterates but its playable at the aforementoned settings sans the Overdrive. I can take a guess and say 30-35 and some skips when ish is about to hit the fan. I heard John Carmac's quote about OCed cards n D3 and wasnt sruprised to see the artifacts at first. I'm gettin an arctic cooler in the mail mon and i will see if the extra cooling will help the artifacts. I will also try using the 4.8 beta drivers that someone linked earlier.

I also have no sound problems on my setup and even though its not set to surround i stil hear sounds moving from my upper right/left, lower right/left. maybe bad wording on the gui?

Hope this helps...

Oh man I am having too much fun playing this.... my only disappointment is the inability to turn on surround sound with 4.1 speakers, you would think you would beable to? But man what fun this game is, someone else said it right.... it's almost draining to play it. Make sure you set your flaslight to an easy to hit key, youll be using it alot :)

Of course I am not warezing it. I already pre-ordered and will continue to wait for my legal copy. I won't even consider warezing then buying. Takes a lot of the thrill out of buying the real deal IMHO. Something tells me most people are not going to take the same route as me. Stupid Activision.

I know this dude was like 100+ posts ago, but I really wanted to say that I agree with him on the whole thrill out of buying the real deal thing. I've gathered from personal experience that I enjoy a game more when I've actually paid for it compared to how I used to (long ago....) get them from "other means."

I'm completely against the latter now and pay for all the games I purchase. I honestly feel like I enjoy my games more too... guess it's the whole "I've earned it" feeling you get when you spend your hard-earned money, eh? :D

To anyone who tried the game already:

Do you have the option to bring an overview of the map your playing in, with the parts you just explored, like in previous DOOM games?
