Doom 3 First Impressions
I picked up the game on a whim at Best Buy in Madison earlier today, so I figured I would throw out a few impressions. After playing through the first few levels, I've got a few impressions of the game.... It's been very enjoyable so far, and very immersive. ID really out did themselves. It feels a lot like Half Life in the way the story is presented and how the environment is introduced. Just a few quick points:

1. This is the scariest game you have ever played. SS2, Half Life, Silent Hill, pail in comparison. The lighting isn?t the only reason, but it helps. Basically it feels built from the ground up to terrify.

2. The shotgun sounds dead on to what it should be.

3. So far the levels have been straight linear, but still give the immersion that you are only trouncing around in small part of a much larger complex.

4. I'm playing on a GeForce 4 TI4600 @ 800x600 medium detail, and it's very playable. System is a P4 3.0C @ 3.8Ghz, 1 Gb Ram.

5. Enemies take far to long to take down: Imps especially take a few shots with the shotgun.

6. There are load screen between levels.

7. There is a ton of hidden areas to be found, exploring is defiantly rewarded and encouraged.

Any questions? Put them in reply. I'll be in and out of my place today to answer them.

That sounds sweet. Did you get it at the East Towne Best Buy in Madison??? I'm wondering if there are any left!!??

OMG I want this game. I have it reserved but Gamestop says they aren't getting it in till the 4th (at least my local one).

I can't wait to play it. I just bought a new computer recently.

Athlon 64 3400+
1gb ram
Radeon 9800 XT 256mb
Logitech z 680 5.1 speakers
19" monitor

But even that can't run it at high resolutions... I think I was reading and that will get me 1024x780 @ max detail.

Son of a b........! Just missed out at 8:00 PM there at BB in Madison. They just pulled it off the shelves. Told me it's coming Tueday now. Well, if you ask me...the cat's out of the bag, so they might as well just release it everywhere now. It's not fair for a select few to have it IMHO.

********************************

IMPORTANT: NO SPOILERS

********************************

Honestly all kidding aside, there have been people waiting years for this game to come out. As people get their hands on it they will want to talk. Those that get their game a bit late (especially people overseas) would probably appreaciate it if we add these to our list of manners:

1. If you post something with spoilers please note it in the thread title so it stands out.
2. If you post something in someone elses thread, please put a spoiler alert notice on it.

Everyone will have it soon so if we could put some effort into this for just a short while it would be sufficient. Most of the veterans around here were probably going to do this anyway.

Thanks!

Amen to that. I would be quite p|ssed to go this long, and be spoiled right before the release.

Smilin, damn right... I wanna shat myself on every raging demon attack... none of this, oh, I know whats coming next crap! (That's the problem with re-playing games like these. It's like a re-run of a movie.)

Also, working at BB, I saw the whole situation play out. Kinda funny, watching the product processor move the display out in the morning, hide it in the back later on, then drag it out again a few minutes later; rinse lather repeat. Some kind of mixed orders on if it should be out or not. I dunno what exactly happened, or what the orders were, but I do know we sold out of all of our copies, minus the ones we're holding for preorders. (Gotta be kind to our loyal customers!)

I did end up giving in to my gamer instincts and picked up a copy. (Just so I could say I had it before everyone else.) The price settled at a fair $54.99, no discounts or special opportunities for employees or anything. (Which is fair, in my opinion. There's demand like nobody's business for it, so it was first come first serve. I picked one up before my shift right away.) Now all I have to do is build a computer to handle it! If you guys would like to chip in, I have a sad, poor, unreplied to thread rotting away HERE!

I have heard from some coworkers who aren't running the hottest rigs around that even with a fairly low end system, it runs alright at uber-low settings... and still looks hella good! (Though not nearly as good as it can "drewls at the screenshots. again")

Looking forward to the thrills! ID; you rock, way to bring back single player scary games! Activision; please don't shut down my store because we couldn't keep your kickass product away from those who demanded it! 3D Realms; please, please, I'm in Duke withdrawl. Doom 3 is here! It's your turn now!

I got wind when I went to my store to pick up my schedule today that anyone (employee-wise) who broke the restrictions and either bought it themselves or put it out for sale will be put on final or terminated... y'all wanna be careful with that.

I resisted my urge to buy it... saw the display sitting back there right by the inventory desk I work at... it really sucked, but I figure I've waited this long, so I guess I can wait another two days. It seems pointless to me to jeopardize my job just because I want to play the game.

Dood, you work at Best Buy. Grab the game and go put in an application at Circuit City!

Kids today...

So it's "out-out" as in warez. I don't know if it's cracked but FLT has a keygen and trainer already. Activision are idiots for enforcing an embargo. I have the (moral) choice of sitting on my hands until Tuesday evading spoilers, screenshots, and reviews or getting it in an hour via torrent. I would have gladly plopped down my $55 on Friday to have it for the weekend.

Of course I am not warezing it. I already pre-ordered and will continue to wait for my legal copy. I won't even consider warezing then buying. Takes a lot of the thrill out of buying the real deal IMHO. Something tells me most people are not going to take the same route as me. Stupid Activision.

8/1 UPDATE! - DOOM 3 TO BE SOLD AT 7PM AT EB ON MONDAY!!

Ok guys, I just got the skinny on the whole D3 situation from EB and Gamestop. I talked to the manager at the EB I shop at and it turns out that because of what BB is doing (not the illegal early sellings of the game) but the midnight release on the 3rd, they're going to have a seperate carrier move it from their distro to the branches ASAP. So, at 7PM (which is the time they negotiated with Activision and payed some $$$ for I'm sure) they will begin selling the game.

What sucks for me is that I ahve to @!%$#@$% work!! :| BUT! My fiancee (see sig) said she would go and pick it up for me.

MY FIANCEE RULES THE COSMOS!!!!

I'll go on the hunt tomorrow then... hopefully I won't be wasting my time!

But driving around listening to my music isn't bad even if I don't get the game.

EB told me the 4th, but it was just some young sales clerk with no clue.

If you're interested, you might want to double check that. Because if its not the case, then I want to update the info on the main page that not all EBs are participating. The manager I talked to made it sounds like this is a nation-wide thing.

I wish I knew when Gamestop was going to start shipping orders. Now I'm a little p|ssed that I preordered if stores are putting them out early all over.

This is, without a doubt, the scariest game I have ever played. I've been glued to it all day with the curtains closed and the sound cranked.

It runs decently on my system but it still chugs when there's lots of action on screen. I have:
Athlon XP 2400+
1.25GB DDR RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB

I am running 800x600 in Medium settings, all the special effects in Advanced I have turned on. I might do some experimenting later to see how each one affects performance.

This game is so good that I am debating ordering new parts as we speak just to play it better.

And for those of you overclocking your video card, good luck doing it with Doom3. I had mind mildly o/c'ed since I first got it and no games have ever showed any artifacting -- until Doom3. Carmack wasn't lying when he said that people o/cing might have problems as Doom3 accesses certain transistors on the GPU that no game has used before, so extra heat is generated.

Everything about this game is good. It's freakishly dark and you will find yourself using your flashlight 90% of the time and I'm not joking. I find it best to bind the flashlight to one of your extra mouse buttons so you can quickly switch back and forth between the flashlight and your current weapon.

The PDA feature is great. It's not just something thrown in - it is crucial to the game.

Two big thumbs up so far, and I am not very far yet.

I just spoke to 2 cs reps at EBgames here in South Florida (Pembroke Pines and Miami) and they both said the same thing: If you pre-order you can pick it up on Tuesday. If you don't pre-order, then Wednesday is the normal release. Gamestops around here aren't answering their phone--lol.
