What is permitted-

PG avatars. That's it. NSFW is right out. No animated GIFs.

What is not permitted-

Anything that we feel questionable. Avatars are art in a sense and as such there will be different interpretations of what is appropriate. Since moderators are charged with maintaining propriety the decision ultimately rests with us. We know some will push the envelope. If that happens you get no avatar, but your friends who acted responsibly will. We don't mean the default set. Nothing. You'll be consigned to the avatar dustbin.

If you have something and you don't know if it's allowed, then PM a mod and ask.

So it's up to you. If things work out you can express your individuality, if not then you lose.

That's the rules.

Will all gifs be blocked? Can I upload an animated gif, like
sticks.gif
and have it automatically de-animated, or will I have to do that manually?

Edit: I guess that's a "yes" and a "no". :\

So, YES, this will be happening and soon . . . and by "soon" I mean "in the near future," and by "in the near future I mean" I mean soon, by which I mean . . . ()🙂
