now that i think about it, is costco's stuff that much cheaper than walmart, sams club, or target? and for bedding bed bath and beyond or linens and things?
95% of you fool aren't going to have room to sleep.
Take my list and think about it. Dorm rooms are small. Even the better ones don't get you much freedom to lug all of your possesions to school with you, so do yourself a favor, bring only what you NEED for the first few weeks, then make a trip home and grab some other stuff next time.
You'll thank me on move-in day too. Imagine a few thousand students all lugging things up and down stairs, down halls, from parking lots half a mile away. Realize that the less you have to move in on move in day, the happier you will be. Trust me on this one. You shouldn't be lugging everything you can find a box for.
Realize that the average person goes home enough that leaving things behind for the first few weeks isn't a problem. If you realize after a few weeks that you just NEED your XBox there, wait until a trip home and pick it up.
Here's what you NEED:
-Clothes for fall, some for winter. Bulky coats and clothes can be picked up when you go home for Thanksgiving.
-Shower/healthcare items: Toothbrush, toothpaste, towels, washcloths, soap, shampoo, etc.
-Bedding. Find out the size of your bed, get the best match... consider buying a foam mat to put on top of the matress if they don't have decent ones. You don't need a comforter, dorm rooms easily get HOTTTTTT.
-Computer. You don't need dual monitors, you don't need to bring all of your extra parts, you don't need more than one, you don't need a monster machine and I advise against it, because dorm rooms easily get HOTTTTTTT.
Here's what you DON'T NEED:
-Big Stereos/Speakers: The 80-400 other people in your building don't want to hear you play Afroman's "Because I got high" 500 times a day and WILL call the police if your music is too loud. All you have to do is piss off 1 person on your floor, and you won't be able to take the music past a whisper anymore without problems. On second thought, get some nice speakers for your computer and leave the stereo at home. It just takes up space.
-MiniFridge/Microwave: If your school provides them, you don't need to bring one. Check that out beforehand. If they don't provide them, buy one when you get there at the local walmart. They'll have a better selection and be cheaper in college towns.
-Every game system you own: Don't bring it. Just don't. They will get stolen, the games and controllers will get stolen, or people won't leave your fscking room until they play through a game. If you must, bring one system and a few games, and count on other people on your floor having other systems. Playing games in another room can be a "decent" social activity, too.
-Your entire CD collection. Copy them to your computer. You don't need the discs. If they are on your computer, just burn a copy if you want to take it in the car or something. CDs, too, are likely targets to get stolen. If you insist, though, leave the Jewel cases at home at just put the discs in a disc wallet. (literally) lock it up when you aren't using it.
-DVDs. Same goes for DVDs. You don't have time to sit around and watch your entire 300 DVD library of movies. Don't bring them. Bring a small selection in a disc wallet if you want.
-Big TVs: You don't need it. Why do you want to sit around in your dorm room watching TV all the time? Go out. Have fun. A 19 inch TV or so will be fine.

im not going to repeat the same stuff, but i will give you a few things people have mentioned that are KEY
febreeze is a must...you can wear clothes like 2 extra times with that stuff and it also rids the room of smelling like sex!
having fans is a very nice thing to have even if the place is air conditioned...maybe your roomate likes it at 74 degrees celsius.
alarm clock with -DUAL- alarms is necessary if you dont get up that easy. it just gets harder in college.
you definitely need a pair of headphones so you can actually hear wtf is going on on your computer if need be (or music)
all the shower stuff and personal toiletry needs...and laundry stuff
web cams are fun to have, especially if your roomate gets some or alot of action. i would not recommend buying large speakers with some big subwoofer. you will start blasting that sh!t and once your roomate starts doing it, you will get annoyed to hell.
an extra pair of flip flops and a lot of lounge around clothes since you will probably be relaxing in your dorm room or someone elses
condoms is always a good thing to have supply on
and i recommend a loft. personally, i ripped out the two desks in our room last year and put in a long card table that ended up holding 2 21" trinitrons, 19" flat, and 2 laptops. loft above it and you still have 3/4 of the floor open for tv and couch or something. we actually had enough room to throw in a sectional couch, but we never bought one. speaking of which, go in and split on carpet or buy a nice rug. yes you will spill things on it and it will get ruined...but a sh!tty rug from walmart is just as bad as the wood/tiled floor
dont forget a desk chair that is comfortable and all the computer stuff (cat5 cable)

freshmen year my room was big enough that we could put both beds on 1 wall on either side and have a fridge and a bookcase inbetween the ends of them adn nothing touched, it was about 1/2 as wide as it was long
and dorm rooms get equally as COLD as they get HOT

It costs like $10. You need: Hammer, nails, lumber (alternatively, screws, power screwdriver, lumber), and some structural skillz. Naturally you have to build it freestanding, you can't tie it into the walls.
I'll sort of argue with you there. I've spent a disproportionately ENORMOUS amount of time this summer building other people's dorm rigs. Unless your parents are some kind of executives and can afford to buy you whatever you want, you need to assemble the biggest, baddest computer you can - and keep it in the lowest physical and thermal footprint possible. It has to last you the next 4 years. At the $2200 price-point (actual price, not what I charge) we have my most popular model for this purpose:

Buy Windows and Office at school - they'll have them cheap as hell. Like, $60 each. Don't get caught up in wireless poonanny for your desktop - network or otherwise. Batteries are expensive and wireless stuff is easy to steal. If you're doing a laptop, I recommend the HP ZV6000 (AMD). About $1100 gets you EVERYTHING.
