Believe me a Megaphone is a must. A good one, like the police have. Nothing says fun like long range harassment of others.

That was basically the combined drug box, allergy medicine, nyquil, dayquil tylenol and some bandaids.

if you don't have a closet full of hanging clothes, one of those canvas hanging storage things that has shelves (they're made for sweaters but will hold your spare sheets and towels and frisbees and.. stuff that would go on a shelf, but dorms don't come with enough shelves ) is really handy.

extra pillows.

umbrellas. my daughter broke so many umbrellas her freshman year I finally went to dollar tree and got her a dozen.

we got her a canvas shoe bag that hung over her closet door too, with 24 pockets.. it has been really handy, for shoes and anything else that will fit.. hair brushes and hair dryers and coffee frothers and clorox wipes and.. well.. you get the idea. but great as that is for a girl, it might be overkill for most boys.. my son will be a freshman this year and I don't expect he's going to need one of those.

add some stomach medicines to your medicine box.. and some throat stuff.. lozenges or some throat coat tea.

you want 2 plates 2 bowls 2 mugs (microwaveable), 2 cups or glasses and 2 sets of silverware, a dish towel and a sponge and some dish soap. if you're in suite-style housing, you want bathroom cleaning supplies. a roll of paper towels and at least one roll of duct tape.

a string of christmas lights.

easy mac and ramen.. ok.. but chunky soup is more nutritious and if your mealplan comes in a number of meals sort of way and that number doesn't = 21/week, you're better off feeding yourself breakfast and letting the school feed you lunch and dinner.. more food for your mealplan money. so.. granola/cereal bars and instant oatmeal are also handy. and fruit. snackpacks of applesauce and little cans of pears and mandarin oranges, or packages of dried fruit if you like that. you'll feel better and get sick less if you're getting enough fruits and veggies and that's what's most likely to be neglected so.. pack some fruit. and juice.

air freshener. I'm not calling you smelly.. but that room is small and food smells will linger and you really would rather not wake up in the morning smelling last night's beer and pizza. or worse.

As far as utensils go, I would suggest using all disposable, or atleast as much as possible. College students tend to get lazy and dishes some times dont get cleaned for days. The only thing i had was a couple of big bowls since they dont sell anything like that as disposable items.

if there's no kitchen...microwave/fridge...

if there is a kitchen, use that instead.
on the topic of kitchens...
-cooking supplies (pots, utensils, etc)
-plates/bowls/etc
-microwaveable tuperware-type storage containers

Forget the TV & use a tuner card...better yet, don't watch so much TV and go do something social.

-Computer/speakers/printer(?)
-trashcan (even if school provides, a 2nd one is nice)
-shower shoes/caddy; soap, shampoo, towels, etc
-desklamp, floor lamp (iffy)
-some tools
-textbooks (if you took any advanced classes in HS, you'll want'em for reference)
-some food--cereal, candy, canned foods/ramen, etc...just some stuff to have around so you won't have to worry about food initially
-laundry stuff (basket/hamper, detergent, fabric softener, COINS)
-bottled water
-medicines--vitamens, headache pills, allergy pills, etc
-personal ID--passport, SScard, etc
-paper (white & ruled)
-notebooks and/or binders
-ALARM CLOCK
-extra surge protectors
-extension cord(s)

edit:
-phone card (if no cell phone)
-phone (if one isnt provided)
-bedsheets (2 sets), mattress pad
-plenty of clothes...I brought ~2weeks worth of winter AND summer stuff...so I could put off laundry as long as possible
-umbrella
-(maybe) formalwear--dress shoes, shirt, etc (gonna do any interviews/formal events...you don't want to be caught w/o this stuff like me)
-PILLOWS, blankets
-water filter/pitcher (tap water tastes & smells like chlorine here...so this is a must for me)
-more tools if school allows room modifications (like lofting your bed or installing custom shelves)

Binoculars if your dorm is directly across from the girls' dorm. ;)

Edit: Seriously though, I'd add candles and lighter to the list for power outages if no one has mentioned it, scissors, get extra keys made for your car and room so that you don't have to fool with it when you need them, a nylon windbreaker with a hood so that you don't have to carry an umbrella to class when you're not sure about the weather, call the phone company and get a local directory if there's not one provided by the dorm, highlighters, extra batteries, tape, and get a couple of those large removeable wall hooks by 3M for hanging wet jacket etc. on.

Cellphone is almost a must for college. This gets rid of phonecard and landphones which.

I didn't start out buying them at the dollar store. they did get progressively less expensive, though.. and finally I decided if they were going to be a consumable commodity, they oughta be priced accordingly! :p

that was 3 years ago and I haven't had to buy more yet, so.. I'm fairly happy with that course of action.

haha...yes! I can attest to this fact. Just make sure you're not drunk at three in the afternoon and using it to harass the dean.

that being said...the only thing you really need is beer. Everything else will sort itself out if you have enough beer.

that's pretty much true, and that's still a good reason to stay in dorms. I moved off-campus my 4th and final year and it sucked because it was like being in HS again... school then go home. Dorming is a very big part of college life. Good times... I wish it never ended.
