question for alll the shower sandals...

do you wear the flip-flops in the shower because you're afraid of the body stuff on the floor or is it just the cool thing to do?

Do you want another guy's jizz on your feet? Athlete's foot? No? Flip flops. They cost a dollar.

People wear them either because they're afraid of what they might catch from other guys, or because they use harsh chemicals to clean the floors. I never wore sandals in the shower, and I never got athlete's foot in my 3 years in the dorm.

I've decided to start this because this year i'm going to be an incoming freshmen and want to help out other college students that have no clue what they are doing (like myself lol). When you add items, please quote the most recent list. Thanks!

Microwave
Refrigerator
TV
Laptop/Desktop
Trashcan
First Aid Kit

Scratch the TV, and get a TV card for your computer.
It'll save some space, and probably some money (unless you already have the TV).

I disagree. Take at least a 19 inch TV with you. Also, a stereo/CD player is nice to have unless you bring all of your music with you in digital format and pipe it through your computer, in which case I recommend a kicking set of speakers. A DVD player would be a good addition, and even better would be a PS/2 or XBox if you are a gamer.

My list:

2 sets of sheets, 1 mattress pad
bath towels (several)
shower caddy
laundry bag and/or basket(s), quarters, detergent, dryer sheets
hangers
mini shop-vac (nice for cleaning the room, you can vacuum up the hair and crumbs you will inevitably leave behind, you filthy teenagers)
tool kit (screw driver, pliers, duct tape, hot glue gun)
sewing kit (needle and thread at a minimum)
TV
DVD
Stereo (optional based on computer)
Computer
minifridge
microwave
coffee pot (mini or full sized... you can do some very basic cooking in the full sized models)
alarm clock
headphones
set of plastic drawers (for storage of the miscilaneous crap you will accumulate)
bookshelf (screw cinder blocks shelves! milk crates are OK as they can be used to move the books during move-in and move-out, but actual book shelves can be bought for around $20 and thrown away at the end of the year)
Desk lamp
clip lamp (nice for reading in bed)
office chair (if you have a place for your desk chair)
rug
coffee table, futon (depending on the space in your room)
personal items (soap, etc)

Consult with your roommate on all items that may be shared. You don't want to end up with 2 of anything big. The worst is having 2 microwaves. 2 TVs or 2 fridges wouldn't be bad if there was room, but having two microwaves is just stupid.

You will learn the fine art of maximizing space when living in the dorms. Lofting beds is effective because you can stick your desks under them, or you can stick a futon under one and your entertainment center under the other with the desks on the ends. At the very least, leave your beds bunked to conserve space.

Futons are great if you have people sleeping over, like friends from out of town. Also, if you have a lady sleep over, they are much more comfortable than squeezing on to a twin. If you have some room, say under a bed or in a corner, I would get some sort of folding chairs so you can accomodate larger groups of people, or maybe a big bean bag chair.

Ultimately these lists are only guidelines. You will have to adapt to what you find once you arrive.

Good luck to everyone this fall!

I have a perfect example from my old dorm room of maximizing space with a loft.

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/DeathBUA/014_14.JPG (it's kinda hi-res so careful 56kers)

Anyways couch underneath, fridge and microwave also under it, you can see one speakers from my Z-680's, a clock, black light CD holder, and that blue tubing around my bed is UV reactive, with black lights hung from the bed spring, and notice the foam cushions on the bed so i wouldnt bump my head, I also had a removable side rail on my loft too....

Dorms suck, you'll realize what a mistake you made after the year is over. I was a freshman last year and well it was pretty bad. They only serve as a good place to meet cool people that's about it.

Cheap plastic cups. Going to the bathroom to wash dishes is awful.
A water cooler. Going all the way to the bathroom to get water is equally awful.
