There's a preview at IGN.
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/840/840957p1.html

This sticks out most... they did indeed take out crash mode and replace it with that lame video I posted before.
Something else that's changed quite a bit is Crash mode. Rather than having individual intersections set up and awaiting your destruction, you instead start a Crash Showtime at any point by pressing two shoulder buttons at the same time. Your car will then begin tumbling down the highway, taking out whatever you can manage to smash into. You earn boost for each vehicle you hit, which you can then spend to bounce your car a bit, keeping you on the move at all times. Busses are the only vehicles that will give you a multiplier here, which makes sense considering that we've been able to rack up a 430+ car Crash Showtime outing. We weren't sold on this new design at first, but it's getting more enjoyable as our skills increase.

Demo came out... I played it. They made nice use of the Xbox Vision if you've got it... if only to put your photo on a license ;) It was a neat little surprise though.

I REALLY dont know about this free roaming crap. I'm not a big fan of aimlessly going around places. I've gotta have a specific task ahead and in the demo, its a little hard to find those tasks. Also, it seems if you fail a task, there's no way to just jump back to try it again. I cant tell you how many times when playing older burnouts, I just restart mid race because I know I'm screwed by the unforgiving AI. My friend summed up the free-roaming greatly, he said "Its like what they did with Tony Hawk when they ran out of ideas."

The crashes are phenominally awesome looking. Its pretty fast with the car they gave you, and a lot less forgiving in terms of driving than Revenge was (basically, don't hit anyone on purpose).

To constrain the demo, they threw up Jersey barriers all over the place, which is fine but I ran full speed into them several times now. heh.

Billboards seem to be realtime ads, which rules... but what rules more... is that I saw a CompUSA billboard. :D

I'll play more later, and while it does seem like it will be fun, this free roaming is really hurting the experience for me.

yah I am very skeptical about the free roaming, that bothered me from the get go. I hate having to look down at a litle map in the corner to see where I have to turn next.

but i won't knock anything until I try it. IGN talking about the crash mode being gone is also terrible news. I'll be checking this out on PS3 later tonight.

Free roaming sounds fun to me but maybe that is because I haven't ever played a Burnout game.

If you've never played a Burnout title, you'll probably be fine with it. I really don't like when they take a series "in a new direction". It was working great for them before, why change? Just make it prettier, louder, and more chaotic and I would have bought it.

Ok as in yes you realize that it isn't always a bad thing when a developer takes a series in a new direction? :D

I don't think that is an accurate comparison. The biggest difference between GTA2 and GTAIII was the move from the 2D realm to the 3D realm. The core gameplay largely remained the same--free roaming crime sprees. I don't think GTAIII took the series in "a new direction" at all, it simply evolved into a new environment (3D).

I suppose the same could be said for Burnout: Paradise: the gameplay is the same but the environment has changed from track-based to more open environments, but I still think it's a different change than GTA2 vs. GTAIII.

I liked the demo. The way they've implemented online functionality is freaking awesome, definitely innovative thinking. Being able to browse online options while racing down the road is genius. Plus, in my experience in just joining free-for-all burnout mode, I was connected to a full server within seconds with hardly any waiting on my part.

I don't know what I was supposed to be doing in the demo but I just drove around and crashed shit. I could do that all day lol. I think I will preorder.

Thank you EA for running another franchise into the ground :(

The graphics and the gameplay is awesome, but the free roaming just screwed it all up for me. I did a few events and I just did not like how you don't know where the hell to go at intersections. I just wish I could pick a race and go instead of driving around to find them.

I am going to give it another go but I feel the free roaming aspect has ruined this series for me :(

And Burnout Revenge is one of my favorite 360 games :(

EDIT:

one thing that REALLY REALLY bugged me was that in the little map you aren't always going UP. the map didn't turn with you. that really bothered me as i'd rather have my car always facing up in the map and have the map turn with me. and it was annoying as hell having to look down there at each intersection mid-race to see which way to go.

Crap, I forgot all about this. I have a feeling I'm going to like this game since I'm already accustomed to the free roaming aspect (via Midnight Club Dub Edition, NFS:MW, and most recently Test Drive Unlimited) and I've only ever played the first Burnout which I didn't like that much (and I guess I played the demo that came with my XBox as well).

Weren't you complaining about some game being linear just the other day? :p

But anyway, if you guys hit the back button while in the game, the map will pop up. Look at how big that fucking map is!

I won't be first in line to buy this game, but if I happen to have some extra money, I may consider it.

I don't care for the free roaming at all either, really killed the series for me. Revenge was good, but Takedown was the height of the series. Glad some of the stuff from Takedown is there but the free roaming really kills the game, sucks too cause of all the work put into that city... sigh

I'm surprised so many hate the free-roaming, I think it's a great addition. I'll be even more happy if they make the game to where it automatically throws you into your default car when you boot the game (ala GTA3 in how it automatically loads you into the game without any front-end menus), so that you're ready to go immediately. IMO, the strictly structured racing events that is synonymous with most racing games is a tired way of making racing games.....I like the fact that you can drive around and be completely stupid without consequence. I also like that they seem like they've added some incentive to the free-roam, one example is finding the billboards to crash through. This is the only thing I saw in the demo, so I hope there are more things they've added to find and do while you aren't in competitions.

I'll need to play more before I make any real decision on the game... It may just take some time getting used to the free roaming. Hopefully EA is a bit more lenient with achievements with Paradise though, because Revenge's took a loooong time to get.

bah that was the funnest part of the game! i still have 2 to get which I could probably get in like an hour online - 50 to won and the one where you have to take down 100 rivals online.

i easily have over 50+ hours of gameplay time in burnout revenge.

I hated SSX 3 because of the free roaming. Looks like I won't even be trying this

I'm really disappointed with myself. I love sandbox type games and was actually really looking forward to seeing where they were going with this one. Afterall, I'm a really big fan of Revenge, and the wife and I havent played any other game, more, on our X360. But I've got to say--I really dont like the freeroaming gameplay here (so far). Revenge was so structured and organized compared to this, and I loved how the progression worked there. I guess this proves that (for this game) I prefer it that way. Besides, I think Skate did it right where you could set a marker (starting point) right before a jump/trick, so that if you screwed up, a button press would teleport you back to that marker. That's the way to do it, so it's difficult to go here after playing Skate. I just don't like the fact that you have to drive all the way back, flip a bitch, and start over. I felt like 50% of my time, last night, was spent going back to the beginning (or trying to find!) of a jump or race--it just felt like a waste of time.

I jumped on line (I love some easy and seemless that function is btw), and no one was doing anything but smashing in to each other like some pseudo destruction derby, which eventurally ened up in a smear-the-queer where all of us went after the guy with the yellow car. It was actually pretty fun--but totally mindless. I'm sure there are people out there that will take the game more seriously, but I can't help but wonder if this is how all public games will end up being, you know?

I did play it on the PS3 (which I hear is where Criterion began the development of the game), and it is, indeed, a really good looking game. Not a single studder or hickup. Super-smooth frame rate and the "feel" of driving just felt spot on.

I just wish it were more structured. I'm sure I'll get my hands on a retail, so we'll see where it goes when everything is open--but I've got to say--I want my Burnout back!!

I forgot to mention in my posts that I was happy to see traffic checking is no longer in this game :)

What's traffic checking?

I believe it was when you smacked one car into a another car. But it could just be the act of smacking into another car so that car wrecks.

I never played BO I, but I did play, 3 and 4 and loved them. Don't know if I ever played 2. Domination sucked, I played for a few minutes.

it was how you could ram traffic that was going your direction from the rear. you could basically just plow through the track as long as you were ont he right side of the track, unless you hit a truck or bus. it gave you boost to do so. it was a pretty lame feature they added although i got used to it as I played the game more and more and I would rely on it for boost, but it's a welcome loss from the series.
