Have any of you guys figured out how to NFC beam with the Nexus 4? I tried to NFC beam with a Motorola Razr max with no luck.

Mine worked perfectly with a friends Galaxy S III. My Galaxy Nexus had tons of issues with his phones, which made us chuckle.

So called the Play Store. They allowed me a replacement 32gb Nexus 10 via some special link. They told me to hang on to my 16gb while the 32gb comes in. Their official policy is 21 days to ship the old device back, so something tells me their rules aren't going to bend. If they take forever to ship my replacement out I'll be disappointed. Oh well. I'm already pretty meh about this launch execution.

Plus the longer they take, then perhaps the closer I am to getting a case too.

I had to use a "special link" to get a replacement Nexus 4 due to dust under the screen. They told me I could hold on to the current phone as long as needed to get the replacement. I am just happy the replacement will be here Friday.

It's funny that I am getting an out-of-stock phone faster than people who RMA'd Nexus 10's that are in stock. :p

I think stand-by power use is the biggest improvement Google has achieved by 4.2, going from 4.1.

It's crazy.. the battery graph has been stuck at 22% for almost 3hrs now. Using wifi and checking chat/talk every 5-10 minutes for 15 seconds each.

update: Just had 1:13hr phone call and battery dropped to 12%. It only took 10% for a 73 minute call. That's pretty good I think.

Nice.

I just noticed how bad my GNex (LTE) battery use really is... 3%+ per hour while *in airplane mode*!?
must be a rogue app. the drop i noticed in my Nexus S test was pretty bad in the first day or two. After that it took forever, and was gonna hit the projected 700hrs standby in airplane mode.[/quote]
The battery life on N4 has been stellar so far. Under nearly identical load, on average it uses 5-10% than GNex and it's even better in deep sleep. Took it off the charger after it was fully charged and forgot to plug it back in. It used 1% while idling overnight.

I would probably feel the same way if I had any experience with the smaller tablets but I don't, I just jumped into the tablet market. I've been using an ipad 2 since I placed my order and I can definitely appreciate the difference in weight and thickness.

TWSS jokes aside, 7" is large enough for a tablet IMO If I need bigger, I wouldn't necessarily reach for a 10", rather switch to computer monitor or TV. I would buy a tablet with Exynos 5 pushing 1080p 7-8" over the Nexus 10 any day but I just couldn't wait anymore.
on wifi battery is like exponentially better. not sure what to say but its like the 2 day battery people post on their SGS2s... How long was the screen on to use 24%?

Should I feel bad for having wifi access? Dissecting my usage pattern is useless, it's not a standard I would expect others to measure against anyway. I've only had the phone for just over 2 days but so far it's been better than GNex.
The actual power draw under load appears to be only slightly better than my Gnex but the idling power draw savings complement it nicely. I guess I could have tried going through the day without wifi but I have 0 motivation to do so, battery is great for me so it's no longer something I worry about.

Download speeds much improved compared to the GNex:

What I noticed and commented in the 4.2 update thread is that there is lot less "Awake" under 4.2 than in 4.1.2. I don't know if the reporting is wrong or changed under 4.2 but it's definitely showing less.

Below is screenshot of my Galaxy Nexus running 4.1.2.

Now this is screenshot of yesterday from my Galaxy Nexus running stock 4.2.

Notice the less activity under the "Awake" heading in 4.2 compared to 4.1.2. However, I don't think that has changed the battery life much. Maybe I'm getting slightly better standby battery life on 4.2 than 4.1.2. Maybe not. I don't think it's significant enough to matter.

Some speed tests on Koodo (Bell towers) in Waterloo. The one result with high ping was when I ran speed test first before it had connected. The three later results are on the UW campus.

Yes, I don't think Koodo has DC, only 21 Mbps. Its still faster than my DSL line a good chunk of the time though and the ping seems really good.

It's something they changed in 4.2 because there are still many wakelocks occurring even though the battery monitor doesn't register them. I use better battery stats to see which apps are causing the phone to wake, and if they aren't needed I'll disable them.

Battery life for me seems to be about on par with my GSM Gnex, which is fine with me. I was hoping for better, but after only two days of full usage it's too early to tell definitively. Although on the plus side the cellular radio in the N4 is far far more power efficient. On a work day, I can come home and show that I've been out of service for nearly 60% of my time on battery. With the GNex, that would always be the biggest battery drain, with the N4 it's usually 3rd on the list behind screen (1hr usage at this point) and Android OS.

So essentially if I worked in an area with better coverage, I should be able to destroy a typical day with my GNex (16hr on battery, 3hr+ screen time)

I would also imagine that if I didn't use Google Now (seemingly constant location reporting), this thing could last a week with my typical usage patterns.

You need an unhealthy dose of salt for this but...

This guy is claiming to have activated LTE on his Nexus 4, because he can now get > 15 Mbps upload speeds with his Nexus 4.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007943

And then somebody else posted this:

The N4, can be changed to "LTE/GSM" and stick until a reboot on *#*#4636#*#* menu. I get increased speeds when testing it too! Something is working with the LTE chip.

Try that code at your own peril. Don't blame me if your phone self destructs.

No amplifier, no LTE, as simple as that. That guy is on DCHSPA+.

Doesn't explain the upload speeds though.

Who knows, maybe he's on WiFi and trolling us... Have we ruled out WiFi? What's the max for Bluetooth?

He is most definitely trolling. One cannot simply emulate a hardware signal amplifier. Kinda disappointed with the XDA crowd lately a lot more trolling and whining on the newest hardware than I expected. I bet there are few who still haven't peeled off the protective fim from the back yet complain about it's feel. Bet if someone made a scale app, few would actually stand on the screen...

From a different person, after doing that LTE trick.

Screenshot_2012-11-22-17-25-56.png

Note the network type. However, although somewhat faster, his benches are still in HSPA+ range.

It's possible it is a glitch that allows setting the LTE setting, but without actual LTE really working.

Nexus 4 LTE "confirmed" (Video)

"We’re testing is out and apparently it only works on the 1700MHz and 2100MHz bands – so Rogers, Bell, TELUS and their associated sub-brands. All that’s needed is to open the dialer, type *#*#4636#*#* to the phone’s settings, change the network type to LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL), wait, and you’ll eventually see the settings change with LTE connected."

Their download speeds are faster, but still in HSPA+ range. However, their uploads are way faster, beyond what would be expected for Telus HSPA+.

Well that is very strange. if this is indeed true, why the heck didn't google enable it by default.
