Official ATPF's User Skillset List

Unheard

Diamond Member
First of all, I have coined the acronym ATPF (AnandTech Programming Forum) that everyone should now use. (This is actually optional, because hey, who the hell am I to tell people what to do?)

Secondly, I thought it would be a good idea to make an official list of the knowledge of different programming languages/scripts/techniques possessed by the users of ATPF. This way anyone looking for help on a topic could have a direct contact for assistance.

Below you will find the official skill sets of the user base of ATPF. If a category has been omitted that you feel should be in this list let me know. Some of the more niche things (Matlab, etc) have been left off, so if your looking for something and don't see be sure to search this thread.

[3/19/08 - After discussing this thread with Unheard I believe it has value if it is kept updated, and if the main point is to provide a list of people's skills. The relevance of this info is up to the reader, but at least it's fun to see who uses what. When it comes to questions, in general I prefer to see them posted in public where Google can index the discussion for the ages. I wouldn't, in general, want to see this used to encourage PMs instead of posts, but in cases of proprietary information, for example, that may make sense. We'll try to keep it up to date, so post a reply if you want your skills listed. -- Markbnj]

[7/17/08 - It will help a lot if members requesting to be added to the list refrain from posting a long list of skills. Pick the three or four top things you like doing and are good at.]

C, C++, and assembly. Very strong on the assembly and CPU and memory architectures.

SQL, Java, ASP, VB, PHP, etc. but haven't touched them in a while.

DirectX9 and OpenGL APIs, but haven't kept up to speed on the lastest shader models and stuff like that since I kinda put all the cool stuff on the back burner when I returned to school. Did a little bit of Win32 kernel mode just to learn enough about it, but nothing crazy.

For game consoles: SNES, GBA, and PS2. Know quite a bit about Dreamcast hardware and registers, but never got around to getting the broadband adapter and testing real code. Learning Cell and have lots of knowledge of practical multi threading for game environments but no multi core CPU to play with at the moment.

Nice, I was actually just coming in here to create something like this but you beat me to it. I for one will be much more active in this new forum. Hopefully we can discuss more complex topics then just the noob questions (but those are ok too)

Skillset; C/C++, COM, Perl, ASP.NET, C#, .NET, Winforms, Web services, Enterprise-level arcitechture, software process, XML, SQL, too many acronyms to list

Background: 5+ years enterprise-level development. My current daily work is pretty much all .NET Winforms (C#), MSSQL 2K5, SSRS, n-tier.

i am not a programmer, but i write a lot of VBScript, .HTA's and NSIS script and batch files if i have to

Visual Basic 6, VBA, C, HTML/XHTML, CSS, VB .NET, mIRC scripting

- Rather proficient in Win32 API and COM (quite a bit of experience with DirectShow video architecture)

- Some experience with port I/O and accessing PCI bus (win32 DDK/driver dev)

Fairly strong in most of these but still shaky on Java/JavaScript. Simply know the syntax of C++ and the fundamentals of classes, but very little about the standard classes available (Boost, ANSI, etc).

C, C++, C#, JAVA, PHP, SQL (MySQL & MSSQL), HTML, CSS, ASP (classic, some .NET), VHDL, ASM, some Javascript

Would like to know: ASP.NET, AJAX

SQL Languages: Microsoft, Informix, Teradata, DB2, postgre
Database Servers: SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 6.5, Teradata, Informix, postgre
Programming Languages: VB4-6, VBA, ASP, DHTML tricks
Other Languages: HTML, CSS, XLS, XSLT, Windows command line scripting (batch files), Lotus Notes Scripting
Other Stuff: Attachmate Extra! scripting and integration with other programs (screen-scraping) Microsoft Office Scripting (Access, Excel, Word and Outlook)
Enough to be dangerous: AJAX, Ruby, javascript, MS Project scripting

Core Competencies (Should be able to answer any question on the topic):
MS SQL 2000 - T-SQL, Server Setup, Recovery, DTS, BCP, Procedures, functions, UDDT's, anything having to do with MS SQL really.
MS Access - Same as above really. Restoring corrupted DB's, forms, tables, queries, scripting, controlling other applications from access, etc.
Dynamic Web: ASP, HTML, CSS
Attachmate Extra: Unless your a business, I doubt you know about it.

<edit> and the forum name is probably going to end up being ATP, for AnandTech Programming. Same way the other forums are OT, HD, FS/Ft without the F at the end. But I will try to use ATPF for ya 🙂

C#, ASP.NET, SQL Server 2000/2005, HTML, CSS, Javascript.

Much more than that but I probably don't care enough about the other technologies to help with them. If I do, consider yourself lucky. 😛

MATLAB, C (with basic MPI), and FORTRAN77

I do numerical analysis, which for me usually means computational fluids, but I'm reasonably well versed in a number of other numeric areas (e.g. linear algebra, ODEs, psuedo/spectral methods).

I also know some Java and Ada95.

ajax isn't really a language, its a method of using javascript

if you're going to list it seperate, might as well put me there too

I would consider it separate from normal javascript as you typically need to be familiar both with this special way of using js as well as handling it on the server's end. Anybody who is anybody can write js but they can't necessarily handle AJAX. Nor does that mean anybody who writes js and server-side components has any experiences with the nuances that come with AJAX.
