Name: Hop Stoopid
Brewery: Lagunitas
Type of Beer: IPA
Score 7/10
ABV: 8%
Review: I was pretty surprised by this one. I picked up some for a friend who is outside the distribution range and I bought one for myself to try it. For being 120 IBU I was expecting to get raped by hops but I was pleasantly surprised. True, it is definitely a hoppy beer, but it had a much more pleasant flavor than say Bell's Hop Slam, which is just offensively bitter. I still like it, but I couldn't have 2 in a row. I could easily have a few of these and still enjoy it.

edit: let's keep this thread alive! I recently went on a 3F Black Sun Stout pillaging across two states and came up with 16+ bottles of it! :)

Unfortunately the last store I found had 16 more but they were in the cooler case

Thoroughly enjoyed the Hop Stoopid. Lagunitas has gone to a hop-extraction process for their very hoppy beers, and sometimes it really works.

I tried their Wilco Tango Foxtrot but I didn't find it was anything to write home about.

I just had some Sam Adams Chocolate Bock, and it wasn't bad. I was impressed. Maybe all of this taste testing is working. :p

Pretty good. Had it tonight based on good reviews that it's gotten from ATOT and BeerAdvocate. Pretty damn tasty, but a little hoppy for my tastes.

Maybe I've just had some really different types of "bock" beers in the past, but this looks like, smells like, and tastes like Budweiser. Not that it's an undrinkable beer it's just absolutely nothing special or what I was expecting. One of the first beers from Boulevard that I would not buy again or even recommend.

Some quick reviews from my over the weekend consumptions:

Speakeasy Payback Porter - Delicious, coffee flavored, easy to drink. best porter ive had. 8.5/10

Eel River Porter - Similar to the payback, but less alchohol, less flavor, and a little more watery (maybe due to its being "organic"). enjoyable but not amazing. 6.8/10

Old Rasputin Imperial Stout - One of the few stouts that ive truly enjoyed. thicker than ive come to expect from stouts, but at the same time its almost impossible to take much more than a large swig at a time. the 9% alchohol is evident in the powerful buzz, and as ive found with other imperial stouts it had quite the incompacitating effect compared to other styles. 8.9/10

Lost Abbey Inferno Ale - Supposedly a "duvel style" golden ale that described itself as "bone dry". I found little in common with duvel, and would not at all describe it as dry. the flavor was certainly a change of pace compared to other belgians though, but was not entirely to my liking. all that said, i found the buzz to be surprisingly pleasant yet powerful. alchohol content was 8.5% and pricing was similar to other belgians. probably wouldnt drink again. 6/10

I finally decided to give this a shot. Only thing putting me off initially was the price, otherwise I would have had it sooner. But being rejected by a female was enough reason to go ahead and use something powerful to nullify that event.

18% abv. Also a tad intimidating.

4/5
I would have scored it higher but it didn't go down as smooth as the 120 minute. Had a tad of a liquor burn feeling going down, but that subsided around the halfway point. Otherwise a decent beer.

Mendocino - Bock Beer 3.5/5
One of the lesser quality of craft beers, but can still deliver. They are always reasonably priced for the abv range. $7 for a 7% abv/6 pack, well, sounds good to me.

Review. Very good. Picked it up today as part of a "make your own six-pack" at a local beer store. Not too hoppy, not too sweet, just right. Very smooth.

I finally picked some of this up and really like it. It's much better than the Blvd. Brewery Dry Stout that I've been drinking.

Not a bad beer overall, but it was a little too bitter for my tastes. The flavor itself was decent, but the bitterness just overpowered it IMO.

I really liked this beer. The flavor was really good, and the beer itself was very smooth. I generally prefer darker beers, but this one was pretty light and tasted awesome.

Slightly bitter, a lot less so than the ESA. Flavor was decent, but left a little to be desired. Went down nice and smooth... could definitely drink a few of these in one sitting with ease.

Well I guess easier was the wrong word. My main issue with Blue Moon is that it's too watery for me :\

too watery?? and how does "easier" mean less watery?

if you want a pussy beer, which it sounds like you do, try long trail blackberry wheat, its like fucking juicy juice

Left Coast's Black Magic Stout - An "american style" stout. Had a dryness and lack of chocolatey or coffeeish notes that set it apart from other stouts ive had (though i think this was the first of this style ive tried). it had more of a rye or grain flavor to it. wanted to try something new and this most certainly fit the bill, though i cant say i really liked it. 6/10

Once again, I should not have used the word "easier". I was asking for recommendations for beer that wasn't so light. God damn you even quoted me saying that...

North Coasts PranQster - A belgian style golden ale. tasty, reminded me of duvel but a little more cloudy and more "bread"-ish in flavor. reminded me a lot of a rarely seen ale ive had called Lucifer. reasonably priced compared to other belgians, would recommend and will drink again. 7.8/10

Maybe try a dark wheat ale or dunkelweizen. I like Blvd. Brewery's Lunar Ale and Michelob DunkelWeisse. These aren't strong and bitter like a stout. They're very smooth but noticeable darker than Blue Moon.

Those are the beers I drink the most, but mostly because I prefer dunkelweizen over all other kinds of beer. Infrequently I'm in the mood for something lighter, and frequently I'm in the mood for something stronger like a stout.

I'd give the Lunar Ale 8/10. It's nice and dark with no hops and no bitterness whatsoever. "Smooth" is probably the best word to describe it. It doesn't have a ton of flavor or punch. It's just "smooth" and very refreshing, while having a bit more depth to it than something light like a Blue Moon Belgian White.

I'd give the Michelob DunkelWeisse 7/10. It's very similar to the Lunar Ale, but less smooth and with a bit more tang to it (sorry, I'm having a hard time finding words to describe the tastes). I like it, but the Lunar Ale is still my go-to beverage of choice.

I'd give the Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel a 10/10. It was the best beer I've ever had (keep in mind that dunkelweizen is my favorite kind of beer). I've only had it once, because it's about $6/bottle, but I liked it so much, I wanted to post a review. Once again, it's hard to describe, but it lacked the hops and bitterness and was very smooth. However, in contrast to the Lunar Ale, it was very flavorful with a lot of depth to it, and it lacked the tang that the Michelob had. This dunkel had so many plusses and no negatives for me. The only thing it lacked was a lot of strength, but if I'm in the mood for something stronger, I'll simply turn elsewhere.

Sierra Nevada Porter - A sham. it was more of a "porterish" beer than an actual porter. The color was a see-through brown instead of the solid almost-black im used to. the taste was watery and lacking in flavor. i got none of the toffee notes that the label promised. i suppose there was a reason it was on sale. 3.7/10.

Any recommendations? (im in CA so no three floyds)

Ive been wanting to get into stouts, but have been having a hard time finding my "flavor". I have found that imperial stouts are a quick road out of sober-town.

elysian_dragonstooth_stout.jpg

I want to think that Platypus, or maybe Keith Talent recommended this to me in the somewhat recent "dark beers thread?" I could be hallucinating, but anyway, I picked this up at one of the local happy spots (Berkeley Bowl; I've found Elysian brews in a few spots around here) b/c I was looking for a stout similar to Shakespeare, but not as spendy (Rogue is ~$6.50 per out here).

As it happens, I've been picking this up somewhat regularly. Awesome, awesome stout and competitive price for the quality. Don't drink it too cold.

Haven't had it in a while, but I used to love Sierra porter. I remember it as being way too smokey, though. (Oh wait--it was their stout that I liked. he porter...meh).

Probably my favorite porter right now:
utenos-porter.jpg

the color looks off in that pic, though. :hmm:

anyway, it's a Baltic style porter, so it's similar to an oatmeal stout in that it has a semi-sweet malt character. And if you can find it, generally ~$2.20 for a bottle.

I also like Sam Smith's Honey Porter.
