that series is definitely not for everyone - in fact, i just didn't like it; it was predictable, the story was weak, it was fvcking perverted (a hell of a lot more than like naruto or bleach)..

eh. a forgetable anime not worth seeing

I just stopped watching it half-way through, as I completely agree with you. It usually takes a lot for me to simply stop watching something once I've started, but Shakugan no Shana was just completely trite.

Well, Canvas 2 is finished, and frankly, I didn't like the ending that much... it felt rushed.

I concur. The show itself wasnt particuarly well made, yet was entertaining and visually pleasing imo. THe ending was one of the weaker points, few episodes towards the end just felt kinda drawn out. Nonetheless, still worth watching all in all.

My downloads are going too well ATM, haruhi stuck at about 70% from being done with ARIA natural and school rumble 2nd season still pending.

So far Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle looks quite good, and Soul Link wasnt bad despite my low expectations due to the original coming from Navel (Shuffle, anyone? :disgust: )

I have nothing but good things to say about REC, though as all good things in the world, it had to come to an end. Let me go finish the final episode and see how I like it :)

personally, i find it annoying if anything. my motivation to watch it is to see what this "original plot with a bit of twist" is all about, with a faint hope for improvement in the quality. that being said, it could be alright for those without any prior knowledge in Fate/Stay Night - the visual novel. The thing is there are so many good shows that just came out or due out soon, there is no point in watching this one if you arent willing to spend as much time on anime as some of us do.

This is like a progress report, out of 25 or so series that I was anticipating for the month of April :

-Superb
1) Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
2) Utawarerumono
3) School Rumble season 2
4) Strawberry Panic!
5) Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
6) ARIA the Natural

-Good
6) Dai Maho Toge (OVA)
7) Yoshinaga-san chi no Gargoyle
8) Makai Senki Disgaea

-Decent
9) Lovege Chu
10) Soul Link
11) Yumetsukai
12) Girl's High

-WTF
13) Himawari!
14) Inukami!
15) Simoun

Girls' high looks very perverted, but the comedy part of it might actually be fun so I will keep watching it. Simoun was the one and only show that I really couldnt force myself to finish, the top 6 were some of the best I have seen in past few years.

I am surprised no one else is watching the newer series, there are so many to chose from!

Again, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yutsuu is the best show I have seen in past few years. Only if other anime creators doing whatever to anime conversion could learn from this examplary case...

I'll give Suzumiya a try, but it looks like only episode has been subbed, and by only one group (a.f.k.)

I took a brief look at a.f.k's fansubbing work. The quality seems adequate, though there are a few minor points I dont agree on. Three things that kinda stand out are :

1)When Mikuru takes her ungodly bunny girl costume off
??????????????????????????????'?-??~'?????????????
a.f.k's translation : Just to make things clear... no further filming was done of the changing scene. I have no words of comfort to offer your dejected spirits.
my guess : Just to make things clear... absolutely no further filming was done of the changing scene, so it would be useless to ask me for the source film.

Not sure on this one though, hard to tell what he is saying at the end.

2)Kyon's narration in Mikuru's first confrontation with Yuki
?????????????????????????????????
a.f.k.'s translation : For the following scene, if production actually went according to plan it will be a great blessing.
my guess : I would greatly appreciate if you would grasp the direction policy (strategy) of this film in general by now. <- basically he is saying the director is an idiot and the whole thing is full of irony and inconsistencies.

3)When Tsurya teases Mikuru in their classroom
??????????????
a.f.k.'s translation : Did Mizumushi just fire you or something?
my guess : Did you get diagnosed with athlete's foot or something?

I would have worded OP theme differently as well, but thats just totally trivial.

UPDATE : eps2 up

REC eps1 - 9

I completely agree, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yutsuu is simply amazing. The animation, the humor, and the characters are all simply fantastic. In addition, it automatically wins for having the Schroedinger Equation (with bra-ket notation!) in the OP for no apparent reason. Along with all the other great shows, this is going to be a great season of anime.

Also, I'm not familiar with the FSN source material, but overall I like the series so far since Rin and Saber are awesome, the music is both well done and well used, and the fighting is pretty interesting. The talking does get to be a drag though, and I'd agree with VanillaH that if you're not going to spend a lot of time on anime, there's so much better anime to follow at the moment.

Perhaps the reason we are so harsh on Fate/Stay Night anime is since it was supposed to be one of the contenders for the best show of the year, expectations rising sky high. When it was revealed that it wansnt aywhere near people's expectations, a gush of dissapointment settled in, and the show became an instant flop. To be fair, it is still a decent show, which is why I havnt abandoned it yet. When I first watched Shigetsutan Tsukihime, I liked the show despite its lackluster battle scenes and other blemishes. It was only when I read the original material I found out why it received so much criticism.

I just watched the 2nd episode of Suzumiya Haruhi fansubbed by a.f.k. again, and it hit me with two surprises.
Surprise #1 : the fansubbed version became available shortly after the show being aired on TV. I am used to seeing a gap in time between the airing and english fansubs ranging up to a week or more.
Surprise #2 : quality of translation looks extraordinarily good, has to be one of the better english fansubs I have seen up to date. Never mind what I said about the first episode, I couldnt find anything to pick on the second episode. Using the term "moe" instead of "turn-ons" would have been more desirable IMO, but thats just me :D

lol

Finally watched the first eps of Black Lagoon. While not exactly my favorite genre, I have to admit the quality is exceptional and the characters are likeable. Yet another recommendable show from what I can tell, I feel bad ranking it just #7 for now. Then again shows up there are all great anyway. Makes me wanna include the book on my next NT Novel shopping spree.

Utawarerumono had another solid episode, securing the #2 spot. A great month for anime fans indeed.

EDIT : I am not a big fan of animenfo, but check out what the people there have to say about Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (10.0/10.0)

watch eps3 on youtube

I didn't find the first episode of Suzumiya Haruhi funny. Just kind of dumb. I did like the 2nd one, and I see that the third episode is now out.

i thought that a number of the action sequences were well done, especially those with the sand guys. naruto's fight scenes were unfortunately predictable. overall, nothing particularly surprising in the movie.

Suzumiya Haruhi plays fine on my Windows machine (Athlon XP 1400+) using FFDShow and Media Player Classic, but I prefer to watch my anime on my Linux machine, which I have connected to the TV. It's a Pentium III 700MHz machine, which has been more than adequate for playing XviD files of this size before. The playback is blocky. I use mplayer, invoked through freevo. If I reencode the video to a file of the same size using default settings for the XviD codec, the file plays fine. Anyone have any ideas on what is different about these Suzumiya Haruhi episodes?

Also, should I really be watching these episodes in the order that they air? It's a bit annoying that they're jumping around. I'm tempted to just check out all of the previews until I know how to watch the whole thing in chronological order.

well, I only read the first book, and apparantly episodes 1 and 4 are from the 2nd (The Sighs of Suzumiya Haruhi / ???: ????????) and the 3rd (The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi / ???: ????????) books, respectively.
Here is a link to the translated version of the first book if you are interested : http://www.baka-tsuki.net/project/index.php?title=Suzumiya_Haruhi
Personally, I thought it was a nice touch to give you a brief idea of what extraordinary crew we are dealing here with, and why Kyon is forced to keep Haruhi happy and entertained.

As for the encoding issue, I am afraid I cant provide any useful insight as I am using raw mkv files (Xvid 1.1 740x480). Surprisingly, this was the first file ever that made my paris @2.5 machine stutter; that only happens in the opening where Haruhi runs in the star-filled space, especially at the part where SoS Dan logos start popping up in the background. Admittedely, the opening sequence is a very busy one at that with a whole lotta stuff being shown, with the first eps totalling 580MB in size. Gotta love the quality, just what you would expect from Kyoto Animation. The only divx5.21 file in the mix is eps4 (1280x720) and it looks equally as good to my eyes without the stuttering.
